Today is Earth Overshoot Day. In less than nine months, we have now used more natural resources than what it takes the planet 12 months to produce. For the remainder of 2013, we will be living on resources borrowed from future generations.
This year Earth Overshoot Day—the approximate date human resource demands exceed nature’s budget—fell on August 20. Two days earlier than last year. In fact, since 2001, Overshoot Day has moved ahead by an average of 3 days per year.
And by 2050, the global population is expected to reach 9 billion—only increasing pressure on Earth’s natural resources. On this finite planet, we need to change the way we think about everything, but especially about where and how we live, work and travel, along with what and how much we consume.
Overshoot Day is a bold indication that now is the time to make a change. Small actions can make a big difference. We each play an important role in creating a world where we all live within our ecological limits.

Astonishing news from Walvis Bay, Namibia, where scientists from the Namibian Dolphin project on Tuesday confirmed the sighting of a grey whale. Not only has this north Pacific species been extinct in the Atlantic since the 18th century, it has never been seen south of the equator.
Philip Hoare has the full story.

Will Travers, CEO of the Born Free Foundation, said: “Horrific and depraved – words cannot describe this brutal foolishness. “The circus should be closed. The animals should go to Sanctuaries. The operators should be arrested for cruelty and neglect.

absolutely!
Despicable behavior on the part of the idiots who call such shows entertainment whether it be in China, the USA or anywhere else.
Animals are not here to entertain us, they deserve their lives, their dignity.

Pictured is Bibra Lake, part of the Beeliar Wetlands in the Perth South Metropolitan Region.
Today is World Wetlands Day, which is celebrated internationally each year on 2 February. To mark the anniversary of the signing of the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Convention) in Ramsar, Iran, on 2 February 1971.
The international theme for World Wetlands Day 2013 is Wetlands take care of water. Wetlands provide important hydrological functions such as groundwater recharge, water quality improvement and flood alleviation. The health of wetlands depends on the quality and quantity of water that reaches them. To secure their conservation and wise use it is essential that they are managed in the wider context of catchment-scale water resource management.
Interpretation, conservation and protection of our natural heritage is part of the National Trust’s holistic approach to heritage.
