I stayed up all night in my parents’ house and recorded this in my old bedroom. I had to go Method to wrestle this one. I’m writing to a piano track Tom Kitt recorded, and working with some drafts of lyrics that Amanda Green wrote. After this all-night angst bender, I got back in the room with them and we polished it until we had the song you hear Taylor Louderman sing so much better than this every night.

and in twenty years it’s not a shiny trophy that I’ll miss, but I’ll always smile when I remember this.

From the start, I wanted “Bring It On” to be about the discovery of a Bohemian sensibility. Self-expression above all. Charles Isherwood of the New York Timesenjoyed bandying about the word “featherweight” when describing the show. I dismiss that outright. The show is about dreams not coming true. It’s about disappointment. It’s about how fucked up people get and how they can recover. It has an ethical spine. I’m just one of the writers, but I consider it a parable of weight. It’s just told with cheerleaders.

Isherwood also found fault with the fact that La Cienega, our transgender high school student, is simply accepted and her trans status is never directly addressed. (I should also mention that in both reviews he called her a “drag queen.”) But in our Bohemian world of Jackson High School, there’s no other choice. And the audience loved the lack of attention paid to her supposed “outsider” status. It created a degree of  suspense that was only relieved by a wordless moment in Act Two that I don’t have the ability to describe. But it provoked a guaranteed scream of delight from the audience, every time. Is the American public ready to accept a transgender person as a friend? The curtain call for Gregory Haney said everything, night after night.

elle mclemore [eva] has temporarily left the show to begin filming on army wives - for more information on that, click here. elle will return to the show on 12/21 and stay with it until the last performance on broadway, 12/30. 

nikki bohne is currently playing the role of eva through 12/21!
