TVTropes is allegedly a site where people look at the common tropes found in the media. What TVTropes does not do is actually analyze anything and it has mostly become a toxic community of constant fanboy wanking. Come, tell your horror stories.

Update:
Hello, everyone. Itās been years since Iāve touched this blog, and I assumed I should give everyone an update as to whatās been going on.
Are you dead?
A lot of people have sent asks about this but, no, Iām not dead. I even had someone ask if I was murdered at Pulse Nightclub, and I briefly wondered if that was a microaggression but it was nice that people were concerned about me, I guess. Iāve also had a fair few people thankful that I might be dead but thatās the internet for you.
The reason I stopped posting on this blog was kinda simple: I really had no reason to. When I became an adult-adult and not just a college-adult I realized that I had better things to do than field questions and make snarky jokes about a website that isnāt worth the time of anyone over the age of 21. I made the mistake of thinking that TVTropes wanted to be about actualĀ media analysis and not just a website where they collected screenshots of Rugrats panty shots and pretended Gurren Lagann was deep. While I had a lot of fun with this blog over the years, TVTropes eventually just became a non-entity to me.
What have you been up to?
Quite frankly Iām living my dream. My biggest goal in life was to be a novelist. After years of work, Iāve finally gotten a literary agent who will be representing my YA novel series and Iām getting close to officially being a published author. Iām working through some final edits of my debut novel before my agent and I start working on finding publishers who will be able to get my book in stores and hopefully start a long and fruitful career.
Iām not going to say the title of my novel (or my real name for that matter) because I donāt necessarily need the baggage of this online persona to follow me into my professional life. Iām going through my social media accounts right now and editing or outright deleting everything necessary. Obviously, my old DeviantART account is fucking gone and Iāve removed most of the shirtless pics of me on my Instagram. This side-blog will probably be deleted within the next few months--and tbh my main blog might be too, depending on how thoroughly I can edit 7 years worth of shit.
What next?
Iām keeping FuckNoTVTropes up for a little bit longer just in case anyone wants to screenshot their favorite old posts. Donāt bother reblogging any because this siteās gonna go the way of MySpace in like a month anyway.
Eventually, my novel will be published and anyone who followed this blog and coincidentally reads the book might realize that the blog and the book were written by the same person. Itās far more likely that no one will find out the connection. Not to get philosophical, but thatās the way of the internet. You meet people, they log off, and you have no way of knowing what happens to them. Buuut maybe someone, somewhere will be able to piece the puzzle together about my true identity and if that happens Iāll say ā...There was probably something better you coulda been doing with your time.ā
Love,
FNTVT

"Using your own photo is better that than a pony." Yeah, no. A cute pony is a much better sight than some random dude's ugly mug.
If you go around Tumblr and gather up every single user with an MLP avatar, more than half of them are bound to beĀ āeuphoricā meninist trash. Try it, itās a fun new internet game, like typingĀ āYour Name the Hedgehogā into DeviantART.

Hi! I just discioered your blog and it's pretty funny. And you point out a lot of legitimately bad stuff TvTropes does. However, I can't help but think you sometimes sound a little... kinkshame-y. For example, you oftencomplain about some users liking incest. I may be missing soemthing here, but why exactly should you care about whether or not they like incest? I'm not talking about underage porn or rape, just the concept itself: I don't see what's so bad with people shipping related characters.

On the trope page for Pistol Whipping, in the Real Life Examples, Matthew Sheppard is listed at the top and if you click his name, it leads to the Bury Your Gays page. Christ, yet another disgusting and delusional example of tropers troping a real person.
Blerg.
For those not in the know: Matthew Shepard was a gay teen who was murdered in Laramie, Wyoming in 1998. Shepard metĀ Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson outside of a bar and the two offered him a ride. The men then tortured Shepardāincluding, yes, pistol whipping himāand left him for dead, tied to a fence by the side of the road.
The defense argued that McKinney and Henderson just wanted to rob him and only murdered him because Shepard made a pass at them, otherwise known as the āgay panic defense.ā This defense is still used today, but mostly in relation to the murders of trans women. Both men were given two life sentences, because fuck them.Ā Effort was made to turn gay bashing into a hate crime, but it was for naught for a very long time. Clinton put effort into it but failed, Bush actively fought against it, and Obama finally put it into law.
Matthew Shepardās story is the reason I have trust issues and fear holding my boyfriendās hand in public.
Regarding TVTropes: This is another reason why Real Life Examples should not be a thing. Burying real tragedies on the bottom of a page where fictional characters are given more tears than real people is crap, crap, crap and should not happen. If there is one thing that TVTropes does not have, itās the tact it requires to tackle the real world.

That post you just reblogged has such a legit point re: its hard to tell when something you are reading about is gonna be gross as hell, bc one time i was looking at a page for this book i had never heard of that sounded like a cool supernatural type story about werewolves and stuff, but it was actually some random fucking furry comic book, that look so poorly made that it was so confusing it had such a long page on tvt. that was at the tail end of when i frequented tvt regularly
Tail end. Lol.
Bogleech was specifically talking about lolicon, but youāre right on that front. A lot of times, TVTropes will talk about erotic content in such a way that it sounds completely non-sexual. I mean, Iām a sex-positive person and Iāve done some freaky shit in my day, but if Iām looking up something to watch or read, I expect it to say somewhere that thereās niche fetishes (or worse) involved.

You cracked the code, this entire blog was made because I hate this page specifically.

What do you think of TV Tropes overall?
Itās a really useful resource and a good way to learn about stuff you might want to check out, but it also breeds a kind of unfortunate mindset. Itās not as bad as it used to be, but thereās some people who basically see all entertainment through trope-o-vision and think all you gotta do to write a story or come up with a character is throw a bunch of tropes and references together and youāll have something good.
Not to mention, after the site banned all discussion of certain adult content, you can no longer tell if a series you read about on it is actually going to gross you the fuck out.

What are your thoughts on the new layout of TV Tropes that came out a few days ago?
Itās not hideous, but itās not pretty either. It could use a lot of work. I appreciate how it has a more Wikia-format, but itās got a very narrow window for actual content. The drivel at the right takes up way too much screen space. Is You Know That Show... really important enough to justify its placement there?
The trope pages themselves seem largely unaffected. When I frequented TVTropes (about two formats ago, I believe), theĀ āhubā was at the left and the content was at the right. Itās just flipped, so, you know, big whoop. Still, like I said, I feel like the sidebars could be significantly smaller.
The previous format had a similar problem, but it was less noticeable since it was more pleasing to the eye.

Have been on the Real Life section of Badass Gay? I'm not generally a fan of the Real Life sections, but holy crap if that one is off the rails. Apparently "Badass" now means "moderately successful actor or entertainer". The most recent additions include Ellen Page, Ian McKellen, and Victor Garber (you know, the guy fixing the clock when the Titanic was sinking. I think he's on Legends of Tomorrow now). I'm not even offended by this, it's just wildly inaccurate.
Someone should add me.

why do grosslords like the guy in the forum screencap saying shit like "yeah i'm totes ok with Rey being the child of twincest" use their real photo?
I mean, I guess itās less weird that old guys in the Anime News Network forums who always have to sign every post with their full name using Lucky Star or Love Live avatar
ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆĀ
Using your own photo is better that than a pony. Although the signing their posts thing is kinda weird. Iām glad weāve evolved away form using forum signatures. Could you imagine if we used signatures on Tumblr?
#Anonymous#asks#I knew a girl who used Boku Hetalia as a text signature.#Who the FUCK uses signatures when they text?

12 Years A Slave also used to have an entry under "Anvilicious" with the explanation reading, in so many words "Okay, slavery is bad, we get it."
Aiyah.
Most of the entries on āAnviliciousā are apt. Things like Reefer Madness and The Happening, for example, are about as subtle as skywriting. āAnviliciousā comes with the connotation of not just having a moral, but writing it poorly. Outright stating the moral several times, using strawmen with opposing opinions as antagonists, etc. Most disaster movies try to hammer in āMan is hurting nature!ā without having the writing chops to make it, you know, good. Often times, though, they decide that having any theme at all is āAnvilicious.ā
You know what a story without a theme is? Pointless. Or porn. Rarely does porn have an underlying message. Sometimes, even actually subtle themes and morals get added to the page. One half-joking line from X2 and suddenly itās āWe get it, theyāre all gay, geez.ā
With 12 Years a Slave, there was no room for subtly saying slavery was bad. It wasnāt a movie where Brad Pitt played an antebellum white man who looked onto a plantation and frowned, no matter what Italian movie posters implied. It was the real-life story of a man who was tricked into slavery and did his damnedest to survive. That movie helped show audiences the true horrors of slavery and someone on TVTropes thoughtĀ āStop talking about slavery, that was like a thousand years ago.ā

What's the worse case of fanwanking have you seen in the Pantheon section?
I would have said something Evangelion-related a few months ago, but someone brought this piece of trash to my attention.

So apparently Edwin Epps raping his slave Patsey in the book/film 12 Years A Slave counts as a "Villainous Crush" on TV Tropes. BURN IT. BURN IT DOWN. BURN DOWN THE ENTIRE SITE SALT THE EARTH
This was the only gif I could find that could come remotely close to how Iām feeling right now.

Not every single lady character who hates a dude character is a tsundere. Even if she eventually ends up with him. One character in a piece of fiction I enjoy is called one on the TV tropes page because she's mean to a guy she eventually ends up with. The thing these people ignore is that this character has PTSD, and the man in question reminds her, on a surface level, of her abuser.
Well we all know that itās impossible for a woman to hate a man for any other reason besides being a tsundere, right? Totally.
Itās like my favorite scene in Jiman to Henken, when Bennet Lizzie-chan looks at Darcy-sama and saysĀ āItās not like I like you or anything, b-baka!ā

I always loved your blog, it's actually fairly amusing. But still, you have your points and want to site to be better. Anyways, back to the point, can you believe I was called on for having bad grammar on a single edit I did (where, otherwise others had better grammar) and, hear this out, "you made misogynistic comments". When AFAIK, I never did that, people know me, my gf knows me, even on the articles, I never wrote anything vaguely misogynistic. Any idea why?
Wikis get very edit war-y. Especially Wikipedia. People will find any reason to discredit someone elseās edit. That said, Iād have to know what you wrote in order to pass judgement on the misogyny side of things. Different words mean different things to different people, sometimes people read sentences wrong, those basic thing that lead to misunderstandings.
