Just some good shit from EpicTestes —————————- To some, the statement is self-evident, but the full embodiment of its principle is elusive to most. This quote briefly accounts for the complete meta-ethical, Proto-psychological, and practical foundations of Stoicism. Namely, stoicism structures ethics and practical living around the distinction between “the self” and “the external”, enhancing our rationality by regarding the external as ethically neutral and it’s effects on ourselves as emotionally inert. Read my review on Epictetus for more background, and a guide to his handbook on stoicism. #stoicism #epictetus #fuckbooks #stoicismdaily #existentialism #self #ganggang #shit #jenniferaniston #brettfavre (at Cambridge, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7Bj4XTlEU1/?igshid=tma5eu5z91ib

Back from winter break with the heat, bitches. 🔥 Your last name is Sacks - Fuck off with that name. It really takes an old fuckin’ geezer to write a book about hats. 🧠👁 9.1🌟 For a personally-flavored, yet universally-relevant, insight into the fragile and glorious nature of the human mind. Sacks combines clear, simple exposition with a romantic fervor for human oddities. In this collection of clinical stories, Oliver Sacks relates the spectrum of curious neurological disorders that he has encountered. Organized into four sections – Losses, Excesses, Transports, and Simplicity – the cases provide a rousing introduction to the complexity of human minds, while achieving solid thematic unity. The eponymous opening story describes a man whose faculties of mind are so confused that he mistakes his own wife’s head for a hat, grasping it upon leaving the examination.  The subsequent subjects display uniquely bizarre symptoms, from “kaleidoscopic imitations” to “phantom limbs” to “autistic artistry”. Sack’s primarily seeks to illuminate the character of perception and selfhood through the lens of disorder – nonetheless, he ultimately achieves exceptional intimacy with the characters of his cases, dignifying them in the process. Happily, Sacks’ writing possesses a self-acknowledged vendetta against the quantitation and conceit of modern medicine. He sacrifices cold criticalness for lively anecdote, but succeeds in demonstrating that formalism in conventional psychology can’t account for the idiosyncrasies of individuals - a universally important consideration. Instead, Sack’s fancies himself a “romantic naturalist”, who’s more willing to poeticize the neuro-diversity than to diagnose their “condition” from afar. For the philosophically-minded reader, one will also appreciate the stories as an exploration of important dichotomies – complex and simple, abstract and concrete, part and whole – as they are manifested in the human psyche. As a whole, the book is an entertaining and revelatory introduction to neurology – he incites intellectual and emotional fascination through a romantically-tempered vision of the mind. #brain #oliversacks #fuckbooks #bookstagram (at Harvard University) https://www.instagram.com/p/B69eNswlu3w/?igshid=12j9jg55wn36d

-Thoreau (Walden) I murder time, bitch. ——————- Thoreau initiated me into the legion of self-reliance. This is a great sentiment to take into the new year. Cut the bullshit (video games, Snapchat, etc.) and start a path of growth. When you’d have “nothing to do”, pick up a book. Pussy. I’ll review Walden in the future. #transcendentalism #thoreau #walden #fuckbooks #quotestoliveby #lamarjackson #michaeljackson #dontbeapussy #growth (at Madison, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6jEybwBcSX/?igshid=1jbcj4odmazme

This some dark shit? Or some reassuring shit? Or some ambivalent shit? Nabokov has a keen eye for uncovering the space where the physical and metaphysical are unified. He is able to make you think deeply without delving into the esoteric - he confronts you with your own reality. Wooooo, Alchemy - gold and shit. Bling bling bitch. You’re a fuckin’ wizard Harry, or whatever. Fuck 7.8 ⭐️ For spirited thoughtfulness, despite occasional sloppiness. Wonderful little lessons about youthful adventurousness. If you are interested in complex, creative, or technically-minded writing, this is not the book for you. The Alchemist is the heartwarming adventure of a Spanish shepherd boy’s travel into the heart of North Africa’s Deserts. With author Paulo Coehlo, very little flows below the surface in the Alchemist. The setting is illustrious, the characters outspoken, and the omens conspicuous. The plot line is lush with fortuitous and perilous happenings that drive the story forward at breakneck speed. The linguistic style is reminiscent of Hemingway’s simplicity, albeit a little less polished and little more didactic. He opts for explicit aphorisms rather than cloaking his lessons in metaphor (although his symbols and imagery are beautiful). The writing is sometimes flawed and contradictory; yet, in spite of all the simple-minded in-your-face-ness that the Alchemist packs, it invariably inspires the reader to be more curious and tenderhearted. I can’t honestly say that Coehlo is a technically skilled writer, but as a story teller, he succeeds in developing a clear and good-natured vision. In spite of obvious shortcomings, the Alchemist is truly a modern classic for its universal appeal and timeless lessons. I recommend it, if not for the writing, but for what we can learn about our “Personal Legend”. https://www.instagram.com/p/B6ZQyGGBKzn/?igshid=19mqhes5veqz

Fuck Nabokov - fuckin’ Vladimir? Could you be more Russian? Don’t even get me start on “Pnin”. You misspelled “panini” and tried to pass it off as literature. AINT NO FUCKIN SANDWICH. ————————— 9.3 ⭐️ for singular style, masterful poetry, and unexpected comedy. Terrible read if you are into thrillers or romance. Pnin is the story of an oblivious Russian professor wasting away on the perpetual edge of unemployment. He’s eminently ineffective and rightfully unvalued. Living in a haze of utter tediousness, he spends the majority of his time engaging in obscure Russian scholasticism. He teaches (poorly), he eats (with dentures), and he returns home to the family that houses him (hesitantly). He is befallen by sorrowful shortcomings, and intoxicated by society’s conventional triumphs. It’s almost as if Nabokov chose an essentially boring context to assert his mastery of the English vernacular. Every sentence is a flourish of dictions and syntax that flows like a poem without a detached sense of poetic intent. Effortlessly, he coaxes the reader into a passion for ordinary existence. He draws immense humor from the daily minutia and curious quirks that characterize a person of very little merit. Nabokov is Russian, but writes more eloquently, and with a grander sense for idiom and innuendo than any author I’ve encountered so far. Our brief acquaintance with Pnin is short and uneventful, but Nabokov gives it an epic aura that is unshakable. It’s fun, silly, and wholly prodigious writing that stimulates my growing interest in Russian literature. It never relies on twists or romance, instead opting for an acute exploration of the everyday comedic tragedies that fill our lives. Focus on the language, and don’t get caught waiting for an explosive climax - it won’t come. In the end, you’ll love a pretentious, dumb-witted old man, you’ll understand sorrow more fully, and you’ll appreciate the potential richness of human life. #fuckbooks #nabokov #pnin #russianliterature #chiaseeds #digestion #bookstagram #dankmemes #jamesharden #fuckfish #airjordan #books (at Boston, Massachusetts, United States Of America Babyy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6V4vxJBQ7P/?igshid=14e2zurj6zdyb

This thing lookin’ fucked up like the old Greek fart who wrote it... What kind of name is EpicTitties anyway ya pervert. Weird fuckin’ guy. ————————— Epictetus was both a slave and an exile unlike the lavished “self-helpers” of modernity, and for those reasons, this book book takes on a uniquely incontrovertible authority. Transcribed by his student, this collection explores stoicism as concept and as practice. In explicit spite of the trend towards abstraction that many philosophical disciplines embraced, Epictetus and the stoicism embodies the Aristotelian ideal of philosophy as a means to a better life. Nevertheless, the timeless influence of his teachings are often unfortunately ignored. Stoicism anticipated the western psycho-philosophical foundations of rational-emotive theory (Albert Ellis) and Transcendentalism (Ralph Waldo Emerson) by more than a millennium. From a global perspective, the reader will appreciate Epictetus as a bridge from Buddhism to the western classical traditions. Certainly, stoicism makes a similar prescription; namely, that one ought to rely on rational judgment (rather than emotional perception) as a means to end suffering. The practical prescriptions of stoicism are simple (and self-evident to some), but Epictetus did a great deed in formally structuring its principles. A certain profundity arises from his clarity that can’t be found in stoicism’s Wikipedia page. Although the actual read can be dry and parochial at times, the teachings are undeniably wise and potentially life-altering. If you want the gist, start with the Enchiridion (manual) and backtrack to the “discourses” for some flavor and historical context. This collection initiated my obsession with practical philosophy, and I couldn’t recommend it more highly. 4.4 ⭐️ For amazing practicality with a somewhat monotonous style. #fuckbooks #stoicism #philosophy #epictetus #lebronjames #bigmoney #fuckityfuckfuck #milk (at Boston, Massachusetts) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6RJIdeHbgs/?igshid=ko0a70fel0nh
