The Holy History of the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins

Summer 2018: Lucián and Longina Mertens-Bonnibel in Frogman Forme - just in time for Summertime Splashin’, Smashin’ and Crashin’!

For my latest masterwork for this Summer, I suppose I shall transfer control to my Next Generation Adventure Time children of Finn and Bubblegum, the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins, about their new Forme befitting the season. You have control, Lucián and Longina.

“Summertime, our favorite season of the year and the Season of War, is upon us once again. Summer. The season of sun, sand, surf, swimming and SCUBA diving. June. The month of Gemini, the Twins - specifically us Mertens-Bonnibel Twins. Lucián and Longina Mertens-Bonnibel, Prince-Bishop and Princess-Bishop of the Holy Comet Kingdom. Firstborn twin children of Finn and Bubblegum. First of a new generation of Hero.

Speaking of SCUBA diving, in honor of the season at hand as would honorable men, women and children (and mutants and aliens and robots…) the likes of us, we Mertens-Bonnibel Twins have created our new Forme befitting the adventures and battles, the wonders and horrors, the miracles and nightmares, the holiness and profanities awaiting us underwater: the Frogman Forme of the Holy Type and Water Subtype.

When Adventure Time comes and calls us to dive into the waters and into the worlds waiting underwater, be it in the school pool, the ocean or underwater ruins and subbases terrestrial and extra, we assume Frogman Forme, cladding us in our school swimsuits (neon blue-pink with blue-pink checkers boys school swimsuit and fingerholed long sleeve school rash guard with Griffin Crest and blue-pink swim socks with Finn-style white blue-pink striped swim cap for Lucián, neon pink-blue with blue-pink checkers girls school swimsuit with Butterfly Crest with pink swim gloves and pink-blue school swim trenchleggings with Bubblegum-style pink pink-blue striped school swimcap for Longina) as befitting our high schooler background and our bleeding edge in SCUBA gear (strapless inbuilt BR 360 degree masks for both, Finn-style Magnetic Ion backpack jacket with Finn-style twinhose 360 degree regulator and dry teksnorkel and Finn-style Hexagonic morphfins for Lucián, Banana-style ARKS Tek backpack jacket with Bubblegum-style 360 degree Airfin and attached teksnorkel regulator and Giant Swallowtail-style morphfins for Longina) and underwater propulsion systems (based on XCOM SORESO Magnet Ion and Phantasy Star ARKS Diver Marine.Suits). Our Messiah and Winged Ice Cream Holy Symbols around our necks we keep as a reminder of our religious affiliation to friend and foe both.

When we go swimming in the school pool, training, racing or just plain fun, having fun at the beach or just soaking up some sun, we assume Swimmer Forme, a lighter version of Frogman Forme, equipped with inbuilt BR swimming goggles.

With our new Frogman Forme, we, Lucián and Longina Mertens-Bonnibel of the Holy Comet Kingdom, can and will take the battle deep underwater to the enemy, the horrid Esoteric Order of Dagon included and bring the Blessed Light of Saint Minato to even the darkest depths of the waters.”

Magic Priest Lucián Mertens-Bonnibel and Warrior Nun Longina Mertens-Bonnibel (Lucián as Magic Priest Crowe and Longina as Warrior Nun Areala (Sister Shannon Masters), both created by Ben Dunn) in the Cathedral of Our Digital Helper-Martyr Saint Minerva.

Lucián and Longina Mertens-Bonnibel, Future Children of Finn and Bubblegum of my 1000+ future and highly religious high school kids who pray to Saint Arisato Minato, SEES Boy-Savior they are, have taken up their Jack ‘O candy pails and clad themselves in lifelike-down-to-the-tiniest-atom costumes well-befitting their religious nature this All Saints’ Eve as Father David Crowe, Magic Priest (Lucián) and Sister Shannon Masters, Warrior Nun Areala (Longina) - both the '94 Anime Intro version with their own Fading Suns Universal Church Jumpgate-crosses, Urth Orthodox and Brother Battle, complete with Bishop-Prince’s Comet Crown and Bishop-Princess’ Comettail Butterfly masks for the Halloween Masquerade Ball, smiling for the Camdrone and saying “Happy HallOOOween '17!” their style inside the Cathedral of Our Digital Helper-Martyr Saint Minerva (Theme Music: Dan Forden - Mortal Kombat 3 - The Temple).

Evildoers (especially YOU two, Oberkanzler Reinhard and Dark Lord Apocalypse) and Halloween party crashers, be ye Lawful, Neutral or Chaotic, beware: the Magic Priest and Warrior Nun costumes the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins are clad in, from the Sword of Antioch to the Claw of Areala to even the Theurgy Rites, Urth Orthodox and Brother Battle both, Lucián and Longnia wield (and yes, even Lucián’s glasses - it has inbuilt BR) are the real steel deal blessed with the benedictions of the Universal Church and has every last drop of holy water of their Saintly Fiend-frying power as Sister Masters and Father Crowe themselves - and they’re not afraid to wield them in battle to the max if it means a safer, more Devil-free Halloween (especially when it comes to dealing with Dark Future Mutant Shocktroopers, Mutant-Hunting Sentinels and Rumor-born Goosestepping Übersoldaten)!

2016 AD: The christening of Lucián and Longina Mertens-Bonnibel.

Lucián and Longina Mertens-Bonnibel in their soon-to-be-iconic Adventurer Formes, clad in their heroic, crested and colorful Mertens-Bonnibel Custom ARKS Blazer M/F school uniforms (The Twins are religious high schoolers from the future who pray to their Saint, Arisato Minato after all - might as well look the part), the holy symbols of Messiah and the Angelic Ice Cream around their necks, equipped with Demon Summoning Program-powered COMPs and armed with their respective Legacy Weapons MertensCaliburn and BonnibelHammer, housing the souls of their parents to commune with (with their Knight Formes standing by in live vidscreens), along with their Ultimate Persona, Judgement Messiah Finn, here inside the beautiful, colorful, candlelit and holy chambers of the Candy Cathedral of the Great Light, with stained glass windows telling the holy history of Messiah and of the alliance of Holy Terra and the ARKS and the grand pipe organ ready to sing saintly hymns to Saint Minato.

Personality-wise, the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins, Firstborn and eldest children born of the bloodline of King Finnian Mertens and Queen Bonnibel Bubblegum, are noble yet humble, chivalrous yet mischievous, Lawful yet playful.

The Twins’ religious background makes them ideal Bishop-Prince and Bishop-Princess and excellent church choir singers… all the while being inflicted with their stigmata, the Messiah Syndrome.

This is Fun Fact #1: Lucián and Longina, unlike Finn and Bubblegum, are deeply religious high schoolers to the point of fanaticism and pray often to St. Arisato Minato. (How else to explain the holy symbols?)

Late 2016 AD: Lucián and Longina Mertens-Bonnibel in Relic Knight Forme and mounted on their mighty Relics, powered up and ready to kick some bad guy butt!

“Into battle but for the grace of Saint Minato march we.”

- The Mertens-Bonnibel Twins

Lucián Liberátusz and Longina Tsukimiya, Relic Knight Prince and Princess of House Mertens-Bonnibel, are born mighty young heroes, Lawful yet playful both. When it’s time to hit the road of adventure with their Cyphers, Luce and Longie/Tsuki are formidable enough in their Adventurer Forme in terms of fighting and Esper power. But extreme times call for extreme measures. And when the going gets tough, the tough go Relic Knight.

Say hello to Lucián’s and Longina’s Knight Forme.

In case I lost you with all that talk about Esper, Knights, Cyphers and Relics, let me spell it out for you: “Questing Knights are individuals who have only recently bonded with their cypher. They are just beginning to master their powers and hope to prove themselves worthy of gaining a Relic. Relic Knights have proven their worth to their cypher and been gifted with the awesome might of a Relic. These death dealing constructs take the knight’s already formidable powers to undreamed of levels.” - Relic Knights Rulebook

Which brings us to the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins’ mortal archenemies, for which their Adventurer and Knight Formes exist to do battle with: Oberkanzler Reinhart of the Letzt Battalion (Created by Magellan - Access Compendium Entry Here) and Dark Lord Apocalypse of his Mutant Empire, representing two Lawful Evil extremes united only by their loathing of the Twins for what they stand and fight for.

Representing human supremacism, a lost army of nightmares ripped straight from the pages of WWII superhero comic books, so fond of supreme human purity are Reinhart and his elite Letzt Batallion übersoldaten, the High Super-Goosestepper is justified to thirst for the blood of Finn Mertens for having contaminated his “blood purity” by marrying a mutant like Princess Bubblegum and especially the tainted blood of Lucián and Longina for the hybrid “abominations” he zealously thinks they are… and only when he sees Lucián and Longina impaled and bleeding their last drop of blood on his Longinuslanze will his Dark Crusade end.

Symbols of mutant supremacism, hailing from the Age of Apocalypse, a dark alternate future wherever the strength of Mutantkind and the weakness of Man was, there was the Eternal One’s face worshipped, where the Dark Lord, his Four Horsemen and his Infinite shock troops rule what once was North America is his mutant-dominant Empire with iron fists, for her marriage to a human like Finn Mertens, Apocalypse has judged Princess Bubblegum and for their very hybrid lives, Lucián and Longina Forgotten… and his Unholy War will only end with the bloodline of House Mertens-Bonnibel extinct by his mighty hands.

Both Supervillains have made a grave mistake.

They face Lucián and Longina Mertens-Bonnibel, Bishop-Prince and Bishop-Princess, Firstborn eldest twin children of Finn and Bubblegum, Relic Knights and True Superheroes of Saint Minato.

And in the name of House Mertens-Bonnibel and by the Supreme Being, they make the complete and ultimate cosmic defeat of both Reinhart and Apocalypse their holy mission.

Frogman Fubblegum

Ah, Sum-Sum-Summertime. The season of sun, sand, sea, surfing, SCUBA diving, superheroic blockbuster movies, cartoons, toys and all the fun you can have. Speaking of SCUBA diving and cartoons, since the Summer of 2018 is in full effect (despite some real dark rainclouds), femmes and gentlemechs, allow me to introduce you to the wet, watery and wonderful world of my Frogman Adventure Time Fubblegum art.

It all began with ideas born of watching certain Adventure Time episodes. Finn Mertens’ fishbowl helmet diving suit in Ocean of Fear. Princess Bonnibel Bubblegum’s traditional escape SCUBA gear in Root Bear Guy. Finn’s swim trunks and Bubblegum’s one-piece swimsuit in Water Park Prank. The pieces fell into place. My course was clear as crystal. I put my pencils to paper and got to work drawing in 2016.

Femmes and gentlemechs, boils and gargoyles (especially you, @ppgxrrblove, @jasffaa and @fubblegumappreciation) behold the result: my first Frogman Fubblegum fan art masterpiece.

Summer of 2016: Starring Finn and Princess Bubblegum clad in swimwear (Finn in his swimshorts and Bubblegum in her sporty one-piece swimsuit and swimcap as seen in Water Park Prank) and their unique SCUBA gear during diving class in the pool (and armed with the MertensCalibur and a Candy Theromshok Trident in case the Coalition Navy, the Letzt Batallion Kriegsmarine, Apocalypse’s Infinites and the Esoteric Order of Dagon (from the Aeon War of Cthulhutech) dives in).

As creator of Lucián and Longina Mertens-Bonnibel, my Fubblegum future twin children who are the Bishop-Prince and Bishop-Princess of the Holy Comet Kingdom, children more religious and more PlayStation than any other child, from the far-flung year 1000+ (I pray you recognize this, @ppgxrrblove , @jasffaa and @fubblegumappreciation), suppose ‘tis fitting I shalt start my chronicles of the Mertens-Bonnibel Twins from the beginning.

2015 AD: the birth of Adventure Time 1000+ and with it Lucián and Longina Mertens-Bonnibel (at the time called Liberátusz and Tsukimiya respectively) along with their Companions J.R. DoogPrism and BMO 26Q and their Nano Espers based on their ancestors. These Children of Tomorrow from the future of 1000+ are what you get when you throw in Adventure Time, heroScape, Relic Knights, Revelations Persona, Magic the Gathering, Phantasy Star Online 2, Mai-Otome and Eye of Judgment into the Cathedral chamber and punched the “Fusion” button.

Late 2016/Summer 2017: Lucián I and Longina I Mertens-Bonnibel, Prince-Bishop and Princess-Bishop of House Mertens-Bonnibel and the Church of Saint Arisato Minato, and the Persona likeness of their father, Finn Mertens-Bonnibel, in their June Royal Wedding Throne Forme, the Twins’ most powerful of all Formes… yet, flying in front of the Mertens-Bonnibel Cathedral of St. Minato and all too prepared to bring the Holy Light of their Judgement crashing down on the Unholy Darkness and its nigh-endless legions of fiends and champions, greatest among them being Dark Lord Apocalypse and Oberkanzler Reinhart.

In other words, this is my Adventure Time-style stab at the June Groom/Bride phenomenon.

- Bonnie would be lying if she said she wasn’t scared, even though she was excited. After what happened with Stormo and Goliad, she’s been worried about raising a kid. Even though she’s the ruler of a kingdom, it’s something that stuck with her. Was it a part of her own stubborn nature that contributed to what happened to Goliad? Finn tries to assure her that this isn’t the case.

- Finn is scared for other reasons. He’s afraid of a lot of things actually, but Jake is still a great brother to him. He hasn’t seen Finn this anxious since he was a teenager.

- Finn is worried that being an adventurer would get in the way of being a dad. Jake can’t disprove that entirely, but he can reassure Finn that it won’t be the end of the world.

- Although he had been living with Bonnie in the Candy Kingdom since the two of them got married, Finn will still meet up with Jake for adventures. Finn is secretly afraid that he might end up hurt because he wants to be there for Bubblegum and their kid.

- Finn wanted Bonnie to name the baby because he couldn’t come up with anything. They decided on Amelie.

- Finn spent most of the first few months with Bonnie and the baby to help out around the kingdom.

- Jake and Bonnie took forever convincing Finn that it was fine for him to have time to himself and that he was being a wonderful dad.

- Bonnie would sing Amelie lullabies and Finn would read her fairytales.

- Amelie has her fathers curiosity and has gotten herself into trouble a lot as a little kid.

- Amelie is a huge fan of Marceline’s music.

- Amelie had fallen out of several separate trees several separate times by the age of 11.

- Bubblegum had to teach Finn first aid because his main response to being in pain his entire life up until this point has been “walk it off and don’t tell Bonnie.”

- Finn is a super affectionate and playful dad. Amelie has pretended to slay him with a cardboard sword but she tripped over the cardboard armour she had made to go with it.

- Amelie’s pain tolerance is incredible and she never stops running around. Bonnie has jokingly said she blames Finn for that.

- Amelie looks a lot like Bubblegum but acts more like Finn having a rebellious phase. She still loves her parents to bits, but she’s a real troublemaker!

- “Dad can I have a cookie” “Amelie it’s six in the morning”

- Amelie wants to be an adventurer. By the time she was a teenager, she would wander around the kingdom with her friends looking for adventure.

- Amelie’s friend group consists of another strong hearted candy boy named Coffee and his anxious little brother, Cream.

- Sometimes Finn and PB call Amelie’s chores her “quests.” They started doing it when she was very little and it kind of just stuck.

- Though she has received lessons from her mother, Amelie was only ever interested in social sciences, particularly Anthropology. She developed very high people skills in her teenage years.
