itβs a really small fandom, but what we have despite that is pretty good! i definitely get the trepidation with gator, and i totally see not being into his storyline at all; i just feel like we donβt see male victims of abuse a lot in television narratives and he really fascinates me. i think heβs a great embodiment of a victim born into abuse and becoming a perpetrator because they donβt know how else to be. thereβs a lot to be said about gator and dot and the perfect victim myth, especially in regards to dot. when the season was airing, some people in discussion posts would turn on her and criticise her behavior because she wasnβt just going to the police or telling someone directly exactly what was happening, or she led the man with cancer to his death after using him as a decoy. gator, dot, and ole are such a set of three to me, with dot rising above her abuse and gator and ole being stuck perpetrating theirs for different reasons and with different attitudes. i could talk about them endlessly. and unfortunately i think gator and ole should kiss.
CW/TW: mentions and discussions of abuse/victims of abuse
sorry this took me so long to respond to! but yess, i definitely get what you mean. and it's very painful to see victims of abuse go on to continue the cycle of abuse that they were forced into. i can just hope that when gator turned roy in and dot agreed to visit him in prison, it solidified gator turning away from becoming like his father. i really feel for gator and can see that a lot of what he does is to simply gain his father's approval and love. and i think he finally realized it was all for nothing when his dad left him lying in the snow.
and truly, as for dot, no one can say how someone should or shouldn't act in response to abuse. and there are many instances in which women do report their abuse and are brushed aside or not believed. no one can understand someone else's reactions completely, especially if they've never been in a similar circumstance.
and if you're interested in seeing the differences in how male/female victims of abuse are depicted in media, succession is another great show that shows very distinctive reactions that a whole family can have in response to abuse. it follows the roy family and how each sibling is competing to take over their father's company when he passes. it can be a bit triggering, as it does cover some serious topics, but it is very good at showing the differences in "reaction range" that a given family can have in response to a single abuser (in this case, how each roy sibling reacts differently to their father's abuse - with some becoming more people pleasing towards him, some continuing the cycle of abuse, some wanting to just simply get out, etc. etc.).
on a lighter note, i too think gator and ole should kiss!

iβm so glad! iβm just so pleased to see someone who doesnβt hate gator and likes ole munch as well! i feel like people either hate gator, write y/n fic about him, or like gator but donβt really like ole munch (and vice versa). and iβve liked all your posts and edits too
i definitely get you! i love pretty much all the characters from season 5, save for roy and his father in law for obvious reasons. and ole/gator is my favorite pairing, their relationship is just so interesting to me! i can understand some fans being conflicted about gator since he clearly holds some bigoted views passed down to him from his father, but i like to think it's just a part of him being insecure and trying to overcompensate for the fact that deep down he knows he's nothing like the man his father wants him to be (or at least that's my interpretation of it) and that perhaps, now that his father is in jail, he will go on to become a kinder person who no longer needs such radical traits/beliefs to feel secure in himself. and thank you so much for the support! it's been amazing becoming a part of this fandom!
