The Basics of Air Compressor On a Ship
The main air compressor is a multipurpose device that compresses air or any fluid in order to reduce its volume. Some of the main forms of compressors used on ships are the main air compressor, deck air compressor, AC compressor and refrigeration compressor. Today we’re going to learn about the main air compressor.
Applications Of Air Compressors
Air compressors are used in many different industries and for many purposes. In the maritime industry, for example, air compressors are employed in equipment that serves essential functions—such as the cleaning of filters—as well as maintenance or safety procedures—such as starting main or auxiliary engines.
Air compressors are used to compress large volume of air to a much smaller and compact space by decreasing the space available for air molecules and in turn increasing the pressure at which these air molecules collide. Different types of air compressors are employed for different applications/purposes/needs.
A simple way to think about an air compressor is that it’s a mechanical device in which electrical or mechanical energy becomes pressurized air. How does an air compressor work? It is like this: In a gas (air), without any temperature difference, if you increase the pressure, then its volume reduces. By reducing the volume of a gas, the reduction results in an increase in pressure.
