As most of the world knows by now, California is facing it's worst fire season yet. The sun is obscured by a thick orange haze as the remains of homes, forests, and grasslands fall across the state as snowy ash. We never saw the sun yesterday and I was reminded of one of my earliest memories: the 1991 Oakland Hills fire. I was 2 years old and I only recall the way the air felt thick and that days were dark and heavy while nighttime was lit with a menacing red glow. I remember the unspoken tension in my parents and our neighbors and just knowing that something was wrong without really understanding what it was.
