From the outside looking in, they had the perfect life. Of course you could probably say that about every sports couple. Gabriella was well aware of the problems the other girlfriends and wives had with their significant others. It wasn’t even really her business, but apparently she was a good person to vent to. Yet, she always liked to keep details of her and Troy’s relationship pretty much private around them. Which lead to her next thought. Pregnancy. She should’ve been happy to be pregnant again, right? She should’ve been, she was conflicted.  Their life was hectic with a three year old and him being gone as much as he was.  Adding a newborn to the mix seemed just like a new whole kind of chaotic. Of course she recognized the foot steps immediately.  Her husband. “Yeah, I’m– actually, yes and no.” The brunette woman let out a soft sigh as she stood up and opened up the door to reveal the basketball player. “I just– I’m pregnant.” Gabriella said, her teeth sinking into her bottom lip almost immediately.   Well that was one way to break the news right? Now all she could do was just wait. This was the worse part.

As Troy slid down the side of the door panel, it felt almost as though he were free falling. For a second he was completely weightless, and every part of him began to slow down, until he finally hit the floor that had been treaded by so many other Lakers before him. His was divided solely to his wife as he pressed his ears against the door frame, her muffled voice sounding nothing if not hesitant. And then the revelation hit him. “What? Baby, what did you say?” He asked her gently as he reached for the handle to allow himself in, yet the knob was unbridgeable. “Gabriella, I’m right here...Open the door, baby.” He pleaded quietly as a rush of purple and gold fled past him, though once his best friend had found him on the floor, Chad stayed behind, worry enveloped in his features. But Troy kept his attention on Gabriella as he slowly stood up from his position on the floor and leaned into it  “I don’t want to say what I think you just said if it isn’t true, but I think I’m pretty sure I need to see you.” He stated, his heart immediately aching with fear once the words sank in. She was pregnant. Their family was going to grow by one, and yet nothing felt real anymore. Every muscle in his body went numb.

“Defense, daddy, defense!” The voice of Rosalie Taylor Bolton could probably be heard in every place of the entire Staples Center. She might’ve been all Gabriella in looks, but personality and love for Basketball wise? Yeah, that was all Troy. And well, all of the Los Angeles Lakers. Perks of growing up in their locker room, eh? Current view: a bunch of sweaty guys running down the court. This was just a typical Friday night for the Botlon family. They always sat a few rows behind the players and coaches. Rosie liked to be involved in the team huddles and well, no one really minded because they adored her and girl knew what she was talking about. The trade deadline was a few weeks ago. To say, the three year old wasn’t happy about some of her ‘faves’ leaving, was a definite understatement. Until a certain uncle and God father came walking through the door. Chad Danforth. It felt like things were coming full circle. Plus, it wasn’t like she didn’t enjoy spending time with the other wives  and girlfriends, but Taylor knew her better than everyone. “So have you told him yet?” “Told him what?” “G! Have you seriously not told him that you’re pregnant yet?” The other woman turned her attention from the court to Gabriella. “No. I–. He’s been gone and I– we’ve never really talked about having more kids, you know? It’s just gonna be more stressful-.” She was cut off by the sounds of her daughter. “Enough with the threes every second! Enough! Enough!” A soft sigh escaped past the little girl’s lips as she sat down next to her mom. “Momma, why don’t they listen? I’ve been telling them the entire time, but they don’t listen! I’m tired and we still got another two quarters to go!” Gabriella let out a soft laugh as she kissed her daughter’s head. “Boys are dumb, baby. They don’t listen to anyone. Isn’t that right, Aunt Taylor?” Taylor immediately nodded and as if directly on cue, a huge wave of nausea hit Gabriella. It had been on and off for the majority of the night, but this definitely wasn’t no joke. “Can you watch for her a few minutes? I-I think I’m gonna puke.” The brunette announced as she stood up and rushed to the bathroom. It was just barely half time. Thankfully, no one else appeared to in there as she basically threw up her guts. Well, that’s what it certainly felt like. “Fuck my life.” She groaned as she closed her eyes for a split second.

It felt like a dram come true to wear the royal purple and gold on the floor of the NBA for Troy. He had been coached by his father his entire life for this moment. However, when his dad had retired from coaching high school basketball, there was a smaller, much more rigid understudy for the role that the male could hear echoing through the Staples Arena. Her tiny yet energetic voice that pushed him to become a better free throw shooter, dribbler, and passer -- he loved with all of his heart. And he couldn’t deny her free-spirited nature that claimed her every home game and some in between. But he wasn’t alone on the court. A familiar face showed up just a handful of weeks ago from a trade and it was as if heaven and Earth collided for the very first time for Rosalie. Chad Danforth, Troy’s best friend since their diaper days were side by side on the Lakers court, as the duo they had always been. The clock was slowly ticking in the second quarter, and halftime was quickly approaching, although with the score, you would’ve thought the Lakers had already given up. Lay up after lay up was lost and rebounds were squandered, a typical day in the under-prepared department of the Lakers defense. It wasn’t until Chad glanced up at the shot clock, showing three seconds left as he tossed the ball, granny style into the direction of the goal, and despite his efforts, the basketball bounced off the rim and headed for the stands of the visitors. The buzzer rang in Troy’s ears like an alarm clock as he grabbed a cool towel and glanced up at the stands, seeing his little girl talking Taylor’s ear off, yet no sign of his wife. “I’ll meet you in the locker room, dude.” Troy told his teammate as he patted his sweaty back and trotted to the hallway of the arena. Leaning against the concrete bench outside, Troy ruffled the wet towel through his matted hair, his ears perking up as he heard gagging noises off in the distance. It couldn’t have been Gabriella, no way. Just a few minutes before the game had started she seemed perfectly fine. Sliding himself down the edge of the bathroom door, Troy heaved a few sharp breaths to catch himself up as he stayed silent, listening intently if it was indeed his wife on the other side of the door. “Gabriella? Gabi, it’s Troy. Are you doing okay?” He asked in a slightly broken tone, his voice coarse as he pressed his free hand over his throat, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion as he leaned into the door with his ear pressed against the frame.

Was Gabriella insane for doing this? Was she really leaving the guy she had found home in the past nine months over a voicemail her first love left her? It seemed irrational. Some things were better left in the past. Why ruin something that was currently so good? The guilt was eating up at her. Although, it couldn’t have been that good, if ever since Chad and Taylor’s wedding, she could only think about Troy. How could she not? Seeing him again was something she could never mentally prepare herself for. Maybe part of her thought with how much time had passed, it wouldn’t hurt anymore. She could look at him and everything would be fine. She wouldn’t feel anything towards him. Nothing expect nolastgia from an old friend. It was the exact opposite though. It all hit her like a train I wanted to kiss you. His voice kept echoing in her head. I wanted to kiss you but I couldn’t.
Of course with the long winded voicemail, her boyfriend heard everything. It was kind of hard not to when the plate dropped to the floor and Gabriella found herself into hysterics. He encouraged her to go to him. Gabriella didn’t really get why. As if her crying over Troy’s voice wasn’t reason enough. ‘I saw the way you two were looking at each other.’ ‘How?’ ‘Like you both hung the stars in the sky, kind of like how I was looking at you.’ It was something the brunette hadn’t noticed. However, they both knew what she had to do. Rummaging through drawer, she almost freaked out when she realized she couldn’t find it. It being the ’T’ necklace, Troy had given her the last day of their Junior year. She let out of a sigh of relief as she found the box and ran her thumb over the T. She knew what she had to do.
Gabriella Montez was someone who always made sure to reply back to people. However, Troy Bolton would the exception in this case. When she called to ask Taylor what his address was, she could hear the suspiciousness in her voice when she asked Gabriella why she needed it so suddenly. Instead the brunette just told her she loved her and they would talk soon. It was being a three hour drive gave her a lot of time to think. What would she even say to him when she got there? Would he even want to see her? Her mind travelled to possibly every memory the two had. How he used to drive thirty miles after classes just to see her even though she told him he didn’t have to come everyday. He never did listen though. How the first summer they spent together, they ended up breaking up for a second, just to get back together with a pretty duet organized by their friends. There never was a dull moment with Troy Bolton and maybe she missed just that. Being with him. It was completely dark by time she arrived. She sat in her car for a second. Debating if this was a terrible idea and she should just go home. No, she found herself getting out and walking up to his door. Pressing her knuckles to the door, she fiddled with the T necklace around her neck. This is insane. This is crazy. What are you doing, Gabriella? Then the door opened and the brunette’s brown eyes locked with his blue ones for a spilt second before she unthinkably threw her arms around him.

Troy Bolton was out of his mind. He had to be. Did he really just send his ex-girlfriend a voicemail telling her he loved her? At this point, Troy felt as though his feelings were balancing on a trip wire, and although they spilled through the phone, the ones he was dealing with for the aftermath felt much more raw. Not long after setting his phone on the bed, Troy shifted his body as he sprawled it onto the bed, his eyes closing as his back hit the plush covers that were beneath him now. Both hands were rubbing at his eyes as the thick wetness of his face now felt strained and taut. The sensation of more tears equated in his eyes, blurring his vision, but as long as his eyes were sopped with water, he didn’t have the strength to open them. Troy Bolton was a man. He was supposedly supposed to never be seen crying, especially not over a girl he’d loved and lost in his distant memory. Gabriella Montez was not just another girl he could toss out of his life, she had a permanent place in his heart. And that’s where she always stayed. Maybe he was too overzealous with his words, being that truthful and vulnerable was unfamiliar, but the least Troy could do was let his ex-girlfriend know that he hadn’t forgotten how she made him feel.
Not a day went by until the wedding of Chad and Taylor did Troy ever feel like his soulmate would be in striking distance of him. It all made perfect sense, until her boyfriend made an abrupt appearance, putting a needle in the haystack of his plans. He wasn’t trying to win her back by any means, but the fact that she was seeing someone else felt like a threat. Seeing another guy with his arm around the same waist he curved his fingertips over, the same cheeks he caressed with the utmost care, and the same hands that he held delicately in his own so many times prior to now. The ex-basketball prodigy has his problems, but now one of them was realizing the woman who he’d met over New Year’s and made a complete fool out of himself over, was no longer his. And that realization stung more than any loss of a game, or any pain endured by a broken bone or sleepless, restless night.
As if by fate, a knock could be heard from the door, and almost instantly, the male brought his aching body up from the bed, unknowing of how long he’d spent in his own self-pity. His hands matted at his face as he scraped the tears dry, sniffing the remainder of the evidence he had been crying. At this time of night, Troy wasn’t expecting any company. If it was Chad, he was sure to get an interrogation of why his face was suddenly so puffy, or if his dad was beckoning his call he would be asked why his nose was as brightly red as a cherry tomato. But as he stammered to the door, one palm digging into his eye to rub away the irritation from the night; the reason why was just inches from his face. Clamping onto the doorknob, Troy twisted it briskly, a short tug on the door as it swung open, revealing to him what looked like a dream. His face froze once he’d laid eyes on the same brown ones he was mulling over, his eyebrow furrowing at the sight of her as if he were trying to remember her name. “Gab? Gabriella?” He squeaked out, only right before hands were tossed around his neck and she was in his arms, his own hands glued to her back as to not drop her unknowingly. “What... what are you doing?” He said into the air, pulling away from her grip as his chest began to enclose and soon he couldn’t seem to hold a sustainable breath.
His focus shifted from her eyes to her neck, noting a familiar necklace roped around it, and only a mere second after realizing what it was, hot tears bubbled back up into his tear ducts, shaking his head to diffuse the tears from making his eyes wet again. “Did you...” He stopped himself mid-sentence, unable to finish it with the worlds that were jumbled in his mouth, and all that was audible was the incoherent huffing of his breath as he tried to keep his composure firm.

“Snap out of it, man. Just think, in a few hours this will all be behind you. I’m sure Taylor’s just as nervous. Think of it as the championship game. It’s sixteen minutes left, and you’re halfway to a win -- actually, just ignore what I just said. You’re fine.” Troy rambled on, his fingers pulling at the bowtie that was, at the moment, untied as it looped around his best friend’s neck. Continuing to tie the fabric into a crisp knot, he lifted it gently, to allow it to settle on the soon to be married bachelor’s neck with ease. The wedding party was set to take a multitude of photos before the big moment of matrimony, so Troy attempted his best to help Chad’s attire as he knew the same gesture could’ve been done to him. “Okay. Pictures are in ten minutes. You ready?” Chad could be seen behind Troy as he looked in the mirror, taking a comb to his slicked back hair, smoothing out the stray edges he was sure would be messed up in the Albuquerque heat. The air was dry, although mixed with the sun exposure an outside wedding was a little less than the ideal spot to be sharing vows. But no matter the temperature that dampened his hairstyle, Troy was just as ecstatic to be alongside his childhood best friend in his wedding. “Yeah, dude. Let’s get you hitched, huh?” He said in a slightly joking manor, a half smile tugging at the corners of his lips as he situated his suit, his thumb scrolling along the pleaded side of the buttons, as one in the middle was clasped to perfection. Spritzing one last wave of cologne, the University of California graduate opened the cabin door, taking one last knowing glance at himself before nodding toward the destination and setting for pictures with the wedding party. Today was going to be interesting, that much the male knew, but there was a tiny inclination nagging at him that he needed to be careful. Waving the thought as if it was a group of gnats pooling to his face, he trudged through the dusty sediment to meet along with Chad to begin the day that Troy knew was years in the making.
