Odd Nansen was a Norwegian architect, writer and humanitarian whose organisation Nansenhjelpen provided aid to Jews fleeing persecution in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia. His diary, kept during his imprisonment at Grini and Sachsenhausen concentration camps and smuggled out of the camps using ingenious and courageous methods, provides a unique perspective on how the horrors of the Nazi concentration camps unfolded in real time. Starting from April 2024, this blog aims to post his daily diary entries in real time.

Thursday, April 23, 1942: Today we have had news of Frode. One of the new prisoners has been with him at Number 19 and says he was all right. He hadn't been tortured, but had been imprisoned in a dark cell and questioned for twelve hours. And that's wonderful, if only it's true.
Tomorrow will be an ordinary day again. But it will be easier to work, easier to smile, easier to get on with the others. Good gracious, Kari. The day is coming on with giant strides when there will be no more fence, no more barbed wire, and no more devils to part us.

Monday, April 20, 1942: It was true about fru Rinnan. She is here. She knew nothing about Frode; she thought he was here. She knew nothing about her children either, for she had been driven straight to Grini without a chance to arrange anything. I haven't talked with her, but saw her through the peephole in the door of her cell when I was indoors inpsecting some "building work" that was going on in the women's section.
A letter from Kari. Splendid! Good night.

Odd Nansen's diary starts on 13th January 1942, but as it has been a few months since January I shall have to summarise briefly the events described before 19th April 1942.
Odd Nansen was arrested and taken to Lillehammer on 13th January 1942, before being taken to the Gestapo prison on 15th January and from there to Grini concentration camp on 16th January. There he encountered figures such as Frode Rinnan, a fellow architect and Labour Party politician who was the right-hand man of SS Obersturmfuhrer Koch, whom Nansen nicknamed 'the Storm Prince'. Nansen was able to get a job in the architect's office at Grini after he arrives. During these first few months Nansen saw how his fellow Norwegians were tortured and executed for resisting the Nazi regime, and the collective punishment inflicted on the teachers of Norway for resisting Nazification of the Norwegian education system.
