“Sure, I know that,” Stan says. “It’s just a lot funnier to imagine them as enemies.” She is not wrong that Earthlings—and especially the ones in South Park—tend to get very hyperbolic, but some of that bullshit nonsense is fun.
“I saw a movie once where it was dogs verses cats, and they were fighting each other with mechs and spy gear and shit, and the dogs won.” Stan much prefers dogs to cats, so he was satisfied with that outcome. Kenny prefers cats and was upset that the cats had to be evil. As upset as Kenny is capable of getting, anyway.
“Dogs are also usually bigger than cats, so the cats get scared of them, but it’s hilarious to think that they hate each other for no reason.”
Whatever Stan had originally meant, Ava hasn't the foggiest what it would have been. Sometimes, sayings or more figurative things just go right over her head. The more he talks though, she starts to think that he might have meant it in a more metaphorical sense. "There's probably a planet out there that's got something similar goin' on, and it probably works well for them." She says, shrugging.
People being so divided on animals was confusing to her, she never really understood why someone had to like one and wasn't allowed to like the other. Animals are animals, let people like what they like, in her opinion.
Oh. That's what he meant. "...I don't think they're enemies, honestly," From what she's observed, they just act differently. Plus, not all cats hated dogs, and vice versa. "I think cats are just a lot less... Pack-oriented, so they seem like they're angry or whatever a lot. I mean, obviously it depends on each individual animal, but... I dunno, I think a lot of people on Earth seem to like to polarize things as much as possible."

“That’s kind of how things are here,” Stan says, “where we can tell somebody isn’t from around here, pretty much right off the bat.” Some people might say that South Park is a little too small, but he would not be one of them. He likes the town the way it is, how he is familiar with everybody, how he can always tell when someone is different. That insular mindset has gotten him in trouble a couple of times. He is not immune to being a dick to people who have done nothing to deserve it just because they show up in town and happen to not be one of the three people he is majorly attached to. But for the most part, it’s just… nice to know most, if not all of the people here.
Odin is probably right to keep his head down, though, and Ava only gets a pass because she proved herself early on to be cool. Stan hated that Craig got to her before anyone else, but she has turned out to not be easily influenced by him, which has been nice. Otherwise, that asshole probably would have tried to turn her against all of them for very little reason.
“I like it that way, but yeah, even outsiders from Earth tend to stand out, so you guys didn’t really have a chance in Hell.” He can see why Odin is more wary around the townsfolk, but that doesn’t make him any more fun to hang out with.
As Ava says that magic has to do with intention, Stan nods along, even though he’s not sure if that answers what he was originally talking about. Truth be told, he can’t remember what he was actually talking about or where he was going with it, so this is just as well. “That makes sense,” he says. “Like, if you want something done, you find a way to do it. I’m sure there’s a way to be evil with light magic, like using it to blind people or something.”
Nodding her thanks to both Stan and the servers, Ava immediately brings the cup close to herself, holding it with both hands. It was going to stay piping hot for a while, and at least holding it like this made her feel like she was more human than she was, using it for warmth and not keeping it warm.
Ava snickers, rolling her eyes. "We do, but I think 's also because he comes from a planet where if someone was new, you knew they were pretty fast. I didn't, everyone on mine was different, so it doesn't bother me as much..." Odin is just as worried when they're on a planet where they look nothing like the majority occupants as he is on a place like Earth, where he at least blends in pretty well.
Her heart swells a little - a lot - when Stan tells her he likes her better as a teacher. He's right that it is weird, but she'd given up trying to reason with Odin on his worries a long time ago. They both had, realizing that it wasn't going to help either of them.
Now she was thinking about curses, though. It was an interesting thought to compare to everything. "...I think a lot of magic comes down to intention, where the magic itself is pretty neutral. I use my necromancy for a lot of more positive things, but a lot of people view it negatively. Same with the magic that put Khalaas and I together, it probably is a neutral magic, and we each view it differently. Control is definitely the biggest part of learning it too. Knowin' what you're doin and how to control means a difference between activating something and catching something when it starts to get unruly."

The notion that you cannot make anyone change just seems like a bad excuse to not even try, to shirk your social responsibilities. “But you can make people change,” Peter says, driving his index finger into his opposite palm for emphasis. “Right here, in this town, I’ve seen it. You should have seen how backwards and unprogressive it used to be, and now it’s much better, thanks to our social consciousness training. Through education, anything is possible, and you can compel people to change.”
He has also employed some violent conditioning tactics, but somehow, he does not think that would go over well with her. It works, though, and he never hurts anyone who is not an over-privileged asshole who deserves it. There are parallels that can be drawn between Peter’s violent leadership and other unsavory, infamous historical figures, but he would be appalled and deny all of them.
An apology for assuming that all the doctors in a given hospital wouldn’t be nonbinary rests on his tongue until she says that there are a lot of nonhuman doctors out there. Then, he knows that it is either the mind of an over-imaginative child, or she is trying to fuck with him. Based on how this conversation has gone so far, he is more inclined to believe that it is the latter.
“Nice try, but trans-speciesism isn’t a thing, and trying to make it one detracts from actual transgender issues. You had me in the first half, and I’ll admit I was not thinking about nonbinary doctors, which was small-minded of me.” He is not the most well-versed in transgenderism, and he knows he should defer to others on that until the gaps in his knowledge are filled in.
He knows even less about medication and disability than he does about trans shit, and her talk about her previous treatment makes him uncomfortable. He presses his mouth into a thin line and dodges her gaze, though it’s hard to tell exactly where his eyes are pointed with his sunglasses. “Well… that’s a little bit different. You’re talking the metaphor a little too literally.”
"And they also don't learn jack shit from it if you don't allow them the chance to fuck it up completely." Telling kids anything, hell, telling anyone something and then just assuming that they'd follow that blindly was a recipe for disaster. While there were some out there who really didn't care, who were just hateful or whatever other words he'd use to describe them, he also couldn't force them to change.
Ava drags her hands down her face, everything that Peter was saying is starting to sound more and more like someone on a pedestal and not someone who was actively encouraging change. She doesn't know enough about the school to say something of use here, but if it was anything like her school, then she sort of understood where he was coming from. It didn't make him right, as the reason a lot of kids acted out in her school was because they had suffered through a lot, and it took them wanting to better themselves to fix that behavior. Admittedly, her teachers actively ignored them for the most part, finding it easier to send those acting out for punishment than addressing it, and often times the punishment was being shipped off somewhere else, but that was still a wake up call of sorts.
She thinks that she might have gotten through to him, that her and Peter might have reached a common ground, when he says that it's not his problem to solve. And then he immediately dashes any hopes Ava had by saying that it was everyone's problem to solve, and that he was brought in specifically to clean up the town.
Gods, she wants to bang her head into a wall. Pinching the bridge of her nose, she shakes her head. "I don't think you realize one key part of it, you can't make people change. The only person who can do that is the person themselves, and if they don't want to change, or if you just keep telling them over and over to do so, they won't. The only person who you can change is yourself. If you're so aware of all this, if 's really everything you study, you should know that."
Did she want to mess with Peter? She did, actually, and in a way that she thinks will rock his entire worldview. "Why did you assume that I would think that? You're doing it again. Also, for your information, the doctors I grew up around weren't men or women or anything in between. We referred to them by their titles," The Strategos comes to mind immediately. "Or profession. Plus, you're also assuming that all doctors are made of flesh and blood." She has to try very hard to keep her expression neutral now. "There's a lot of non-living doctors out there too."
That example didn't really work well either, and Ava wants to make sure she pokes as many holes in Peter's logic as she can. "Plus, doctors can only fix a surface level problem in the most simple terms. It's up to the person who sustained the injury to stick to a recovery plan, or whatever it is that they need." She really doesn't want to use herself as an example, but it felt appropriate for once. "I used to be a violent kid, and it took me realizing that I didn't want to be like that, that I didn't want to be doped up on medication all the time, to change. The doctors and everyone else around me could have done everything you're doin' to tell me I needed to change, that it was best, but if I didn't choose to do it, I can almost guarantee you I'd either be locked away somewhere or a doped up corpse right now."
Throwing her hands up in exasperation, Ava does a quick little pace around in a circle. "And what if you end up scaring them into doubling down into those behaviors instead? Maybe some of them need a wake up call like that, but not all of them. Stop lumping everyone in the world into categories, for fuck's sake, you're no better than the people you claim to want to be better than when you do that!"

Richard’s coffeeshop might see more success if he moved it to a bigger city, all those commuters lining up every morning, he could sell a lot more and make a lot more money, but it’s not always about finances. They have already invested so much in this town, and there are too many risks involved with starting over elsewhere. Tweek has his school and his boyfriend, and it already takes a lot to keep him from gallivanting off to God knows where. Richard can only imagine how much harder he would be to keep an eye on when going across town means getting on the interstate.
Then, there would be the issue of finding a new supplier for their special ingredient without the McCormicks, who definitely would not be able to afford to come with them. Not to mention, the risk of getting caught and arrested for using their special ingredient would skyrocket since they would not already have the local police hopelessly dependent on their coffee.
The big city is also filled with more highly educated people including doctors and whatnot, who might be able to see that there is something wrong with Tweek and rip him away from them. The general lack of awareness permeating South Park’s populace works out wonderfully for the Tweaks. The only ones who seem to notice that there is anything wrong with their son are the other kids in town, and it is easy enough to lie to them about what Tweek’s problem is—a combination of ADD and an overactive imagination leading to utterly unfounded paranoia.
“No,” Richard says, “I can’t say that we do. We don’t really leave, and we don’t get a lot of visitors, which makes you and the Marshes pretty special. The Marshes are a family who used to live in town but moved out to a marijuana farm a few months ago.” Richard does not let his distaste for Randy Marsh show, relaying the facts of that family’s more as neutrally as he can to gauge Ava’s reaction. He is not going to tell her that Randy has become more intolerable since moving to the farm. Unfortunately, that man is probably the best hope that the Tweaks have to get meth legalized. After all, he was able to make the legalization of cocaine happen in one afternoon.
“Generally, though, once people plant roots in a place, they’re very hard to tear up. Even those who want to leave find themselves tethered to too many obligations to actually do it. But I’m one of those people who has always been a bit of a homebody, so I don’t mind it.” He shrugs and straightens a napkin holder. “There used to be only one of each time of business in town. For example, Tweek Bros. used to be the only coffeehouse in town. So, for a lot of people, leaving town would mean letting down dozens of others who depend on them. We don’t really have a big science person since Randy left.” He was a geologist, but he was still one of the most educated men in town, so they went to him with questions unrelated to rocks as well.
“Ah,” he says, the corner of his mouth twitching as he tries to decide if it would be better to smile or frown here. “I didn’t realize they were so rare and difficult to find.” She is right; the small nursery in town would not carry lesser known varieties. It has plenty of daisies, pansies, tulips, and mums, depending on what is in season at the time, the flowers that everyone wants to put in their yards to symbolize perfect American suburbia. “I know she would love the opportunity to stand out from the other yards, though, so it might be worth making the trek out to the city, after all.”
Ava finds things that keep her tethered to the present, that are calming and methodical because she is a walking timebomb at the best of times. Her life had already been so chaotic, so full of suffering, that she had to find something to put herself in a state of control and calm long before the pact. Now, with it, those skills became paramount as it kept innocent people safe. That, and by now she'd come to terms and was okay with the fact that she was alone in the universe for the most part.
There was one glaring oversight with that idea, fortunately unknown to Richard. Stubbornness aside, there likely wasn't any sort of material on Earth that could truly keep her locked up. If the Gate hadn't, they didn't have a chance in hell.
She's not so out of touch to miss that most people find talk of flowers and their growing habits dull, and is generally prepared to nip the conversation in the proverbial bud long before she really gets going. "That's what I've heard from a lot of people... You guys don't feel the need to see the world, huh?"
Had it not been so ingrained into her that traveling was a necessary evil, she might have understood the notion of townies a little more. It was funny, even being stuck on a planet that would have likely not given her the chance to ever leave, she still had more than enough access to methods that would have gotten her off it and into the universe at large. Hell, Titan's schooling - providing any of them had shown any potential - would have them holed up in another school to learn if it was viable. Had she stayed, the planet remained, there was also an equally likely chance that she would have been shipped off to a new planet soon for her acting out. If she had grown up, they would have stuck her on some other planet to work.
A huffy laugh leaves her, the realization of what her suggestion of flowers was in tandem with the residents of South Park rarely leaving being highly ironic. "Good luck findin' 'em, they're kinda considered specialty... You might need to go to a bigger town or somethin' for a lot of the odder flowers."

Stan shrugged. “I get that a lot,” he said. Sometimes, he would like to look the part a little more, but he wasn’t overly bothered about it. Dressing up like that was a lot of work.
“I listen to a lot of shit, actually. I’ve just been really into this lately.” It was exciting and so vastly different from the music that ruled much of his earlier years. He had become bored of all of that, then found metal, which sparked something in him with its raw power and emotion.
“It’s cool that you like it, though. Most adults around here think it’s just devil shit. Not that the Devil’s even that bad of a guy.”

❖
The loud music caused Nova to jerk her head back a bit, but not enough to cause the earbud to fall out. Thankfully. She didn't want to come off as rude when the music startled her. It's not that she never heard death metal before or didn't quite enjoy it. She did. In fact, there were a few friends before her death that was in a metal band and she attended their concerts here and there. A way to support them, despite them disbanding not long afterwards, wanting different things in life.
She fixed herself back into her original position. A smile forming onto her lips.

❛ i don't wanna remember what i did last night. ❜
❛ i'm not just drunk, i- i really think i'm in love with you, baby. ...okay, i really am just... drunk. ❜
❛ let 'em know who we are. ❜
❛ let's go hard like we're insane. ❜
❛ if i'm the king of cowards, you're the queen of pain. ❜
❛ i used to be a lap dog, now i'm just a stray. ❜
❛ yeah, i heard you was sick. ❜
❛ you could never catch my flow. ❜
❛ if i told you that i loved you, you'd maybe think there's something wrong. ❜
❛ those who speak know nothing. ❜
❛ you may be good-looking, but you're not a piece of art. ❜
❛ you can't have peace without a war. ❜
❛ under the skin, against the skull, they put a little chip so that they know it all. ❜
❛ i want what's best for me. ❜
❛ by the way, what the hell are morals? ❜
❛ you've always been a huge piece of shit. if i could kill you, i would. ❜
❛ you either wanna be with me or be me. ❜
❛ when she asks for something, boy, she means it. ❜
❛ you play me like i am made of strings. ❜
❛ my world revolves around you. ❜
❛ don't stop giving me things. ❜
❛ we're all just having fun. ❜
❛ i still haven't gotten anywhere that i want. ❜
❛ my thoughts were so loud i couldn't hear my mouth. ❜
❛ make me feel like someone else. ❜
❛ you got me talkin' in my sleep. ❜
❛ stir the rice so it doesn't stick to the bottom. ❜
❛ actually, no, that makes it harder when you kill them. ❜
❛ you could have had it all if you'd have got your shit straight. ❜
❛ i can't stick around and watch you crumble. ❜
❛ don't you think i deserve better after all that we've been through? ❜
❛ this'll hurt less if you just submit. ❜
❛ i need a fucking miracle. ❜
❛ we just wanna love, we just wanna be loved. ❜
❛ it's hard to save a dollar the way the world runs. ❜
❛ our generation is a fucking joke. ❜
❛ you're just so full of it; at least we don't pretend. ❜
❛ nothing's ever gonna break up what we found. ❜
❛ in your mind, you think it's only you against the world. ❜
❛ have you lost yourself? ❜
❛ you and i were meant to be, it's easy to see. ❜
❛ i'm not the perfect guy, a little slow, but i've got perfect timing with you. ❜
❛ trouble, he will find you, no matter where you go. ❜
❛ i won't let him win, but i'm a sucker for his charm. ❜
❛ so what if it hurts me? so what if i break down? ❜
❛ get me out of here. ❜
❛ you don't wanna play with me? ❜
❛ sorry, babe, you're just a one-night stand. ❜
❛ show them that rules were meant to break. ❜
❛ you better jump on it fast. ❜
❛ it's all a lie, but you'd never know. ❜
❛ there's something waiting for you here. ❜
❛ i was fine before you walked into my life. ❜
❛ high fivin', talking shit, but you're going home alone, aren't ya? ❜
❛ don't care for anyone else. ❜
❛ wake up, the dream is over. ❜
❛ if i'm gonna be honest, i am the best in the game. ❜
❛ darling, i swear i'll never leave. ❜
❛ you always fold just before you're found out. ❜
❛ i only want sympathy in the form of you crawling into bed with me. ❜
❛ you say you're gonna quit it, but you're never gonna quit it. ❜
❛ the feds are here, you know. ❜
❛ hard to see in color when you're miserable. ❜
❛ it's just not your time to die. ❜
❛ we treat mishaps like sinking ships. ❜
❛ i don't think there was an insult that was missed. ❜
❛ say what you wanna say. ❜
❛ maybe there's a way out of the cage where you live. ❜

PROMPTS FROM WHEN HARRY MET SALLY * assorted dialogue, adjust as necessary
i've been doing a lot of thinking, and the thing is, i love you.
i love that you get cold when it's 71 degrees out.
i love that it takes you an hour and a half to order a sandwich.
i love that you get a little crinkle above your nose when you're looking at me like i'm nuts.
i love that after i spend the day with you, i can still smell your perfume on my clothes.
i love that you are the last person i want to talk to before i go to sleep at night.
i came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible.
i'll have what she's having.
would you like to have dinner?
i thought you didn't believe men and women could be friends.
when did i say that?
i mean, come on, who the hell are we kidding?
most women at one time or another have faked it.
they haven't faked it with me.
that's right. i forgot. you're a man.
what was that supposed to mean?
it is so nice when you can sit with someone and not have to talk.
marriages don't break up on account of infidelity. it's just a symptom that something else is wrong.
you realize of course that we could never be friends.
men and women can't be friends because the sex part always gets in the way.
that's not true.
i have a number of men friends and there is no sex involved.
you only think you do.
they all want to have sex with you.
no man can be friends with a woman that he finds attractive.
i guess we're not going to be friends then.
you were the only person i knew in new york.
there are two kinds of women: high maintenance and low maintenance.
which one am i?
you're the worst kind.
you're high maintenance but you think you're low maintenance.
i just want it the way i want it.
you look like a normal person, but actually you are the angel of death.
don't you have a dark side?
when i buy a new book, i read the last page first.
if you could take him back now, would you?
why didn't he want to marry me?
what's the matter with me?
you're challenging.
i'm too structured. i'm completely closed off.
i drove him away.
how do you expect me to respond to this?
i'm leaving.
i don't have to take this crap from you.
what the hell does that have to do with anything?
are you finished now?
can i say something?
i'm sorry.
everybody thinks they have good taste and a sense of humor but they couldn't possibly all have good taste.
that is just like you.
you say things like that, and you make it impossible for me to hate you.
at least i got the apartment.
the first time we met, we hated each other.
we were friends for a long time.
it only took three months.
you will never have to be out there again.
i'm not going to tell you that.
i miss her.
you know what i miss? i miss the idea of him.
when did this happen?
you don't bounce back from that right away.
doesn't what i said mean anything for you?
i hate you, [name]. i really hate you.
what can i get you?
no one has ever quoted me back to me before.
you know, i'm so glad i never got involved with you.
i am not your consolation prize.
i wrote that.
you're going to have to try and find a way of not expressing every feeling that you have, every moment that you have them.
