Brian Fraser headed towards the son he had not seen up close for over a hundred years, arms stretched out. Jamie had longed for his family, but being truly held by his father brought a sense of relief he was not prepared for. Brian felt just as strong as he’d always remembered. The peck placed on his cheek felt soft. When he started to pull away, Jamie clung to him.  “I’ve missed you, too, son,” Brian chuckled and clapped Jamie’s back. “Ye’ve been workin’ hard, I gather!” Jamie finally released his grip on his father. “I… well I wanted it to mean something, I s’pose.” “What’s that?”  “My death. My life. All of it. I didna have much time before…” Jamie hadn’t thought about his actual passing since it happened.

It was dark yet when Claire awoke, grasping at Jamie’s solid form beneath her, making sure he was with her. “I’m still here, lass,” he answered to her touch and took the fingers that were twisting in his shirt with his hand. “I didn’t want to fall asleep…” her voice was watery as she stroked his knuckles with her thumb.

“It’s alright, Sassenach, you were tired.” Jamie pressed his mouth to the top of her head. “Ye have every right t’be.” Claire nuzzled her face into his chest. Feeling the sturdiness of him against her soft cheek, she was grateful, no matter how long they had. She took a deep breath, inhaling him, trying to hold some piece of him inside her.

Chapter 6 takes Jamie and Claire to visit the future

“It was you, wasn’t it?” Claire had asked Jamie.

He took a step closer to her so that they were toe to toe. “Aye. Aye, it was.”

“But how? You said they can’t hear us…” she was moving her head from side to side as if it would shake some sense of clarity into her.

“They canna,” Jamie’s fingers started ticking against his leg. “You shouldn’t have been able to hear me either, but when I spoke that day and you turned back… I thought mebbe ye had.” He lifted his hand and started to reach for her before stopping himself and lowering it back to his side.

Jamie and Claire landed in The Royal Oak, hands still clasped together. Ned was closing down the pub, wearing the same Christmas jumper as earlier that evening— “Rucking Around the Christmas Tree” printed around an illustration of rugby players in a scrum in front of a Christmas tree. The band she had left during was packing up their instruments to load into their van.

“Are we…” Claire began, but Jamie finished for her, “in the present, aye.”

Instead of a cold city street, Jamie and Claire stepped into sunshine on lush green grass. “What is this?” she asked him.

“This is the Haberdashers’ Monmouth School for Girls,” Jamie answered and pointed to the large brick building with white windows behind her. She turned around and looked through the flowering trees to see a middle aged man dropping off a young girl. She knew just when they were.
