DRRM Kwentuhan in Brgy. 397 Zone 41 Sampaloc, Manila

Yesterday I had the opportunity to interview some people in the barangay hall.

I got to interview their SK Chairman Patrick Michael Manalo and he informed me some disasters and crimes that happened in their barangay.

First, I asked him to identify the hazards that already happened in their barangay and he said that typhoon is always happening in the Philippines so their barangay too. Also, fires only hit their barangay sometimes. As a student, I asked him why flood is the dangerous disaster that may happen in their barangay, hi response is:

“Ang flood ang pinaka panganib na nakakaapekto ng matindi sa barangay namin kasi minsan ito ay umaabot hanggang binti or minsan ay hanggang leeg ang tubig. Ang bagyong Ondoy at Habagat ang sobrang malalang bagyo na nangyare noon. At kung tungkol naman sa peace and order, ang crime ang madalas na nangyayare sa barangay namin lalo na at sakop kami ng Maynila. Ito ay more on snatching at budol-budol gang.”

As a college student, I asked him how we, people, may know if there are disasters and crimes that may occur anytime and his response is:

“Sa panahon natin ngayon uso ang TV. Lahat tayo ay may TV sa bahay maaring tayong makakuha ng impormasyon kung mayroong paparating na sakuna sa ating bayan. Kung sa pamamagitan naman ng cellphone, nagtetext sa atin ang DRRMC kung mayroong sakunang dapat paghandaan. Maaari rin tayong makakuha ng impormasyon gamit ang social media, kadalasan ang ating Mayor ay nagla-live sa pamamagitan ng Facebook at doon siya nag-aabiso ng mga dapat gawin.”

I also asked how frequently that hazards may happen,,;

“Kung ang mga disaster tulad ng mga bagyo, ito ay taon-taon na nangyayare sa bawat pamayanan. Sa crime naman, lalo na ngayon December na kaya uso na ang snatching at budol-budol lalo na sa Maynila.”

Vulnerability, Elements and People at Risk Assessment

I asked the vulnerable places in their barangay and he said that,;

“Ang may pinaka-matinding napipinsala ay yung nasa Depressed area o mga nasa squatters area tulad ng Tondo, Maynila dahil ang kanilang bahay ay gawa sa mga light materials kaya madali itong mapinsala. Dito sa brgy. 397 zone 41 halos wala masyadong napipinsala dahil ito ay fully-constructed kumbaga puro semento.”

He also stated that when those disasters occur the effect of it to the vendors are really sad because they may lost their business and it may destroy their future. Furthermore, some vendors are unsheltered.

Their barangay also made a drill with their people of such safety tricks when the disaster may occur. They want that all people will be ready when it happens.

They made a project like teaching those people in the barangay on what to do when the disasters occur;

Do’s and Don’t’s when the disasters may appear

Do’s when the earthquake occur;

Duck down to the floor, take cover under a sturdy table or desk, and hold on until the shaking stops. Remember: Avoid danger spots near windows, hanging objects, mirrors, or tall furniture. If you take cover under a sturdy piece of furniture, hold on to it and be prepared to move with it.

By those advices from SK Chairman Patrick, I hope that people who are reading my blog may apply it to their life when such disaster happens.
