i don’t know if these needs to be said but calling Dany’s slaver’s bay arc orientalist is not a criticism of Dany herself. it is a criticism of GRRM, the white westerner writing it. Dany is not responsible for the orientalist tropes that arise here, any more than say, Lyanna Stark et al are responsible for the disproportionate number of childbirth deaths in the series.

and I am aware that the people of slaver’s bay are of many different races, including white! GRRM has said that many times over. but the thing is that orientalism is not so much about race as it is the east vs the west. so whilst the racial dynamics here may be more ambiguous the juxtaposition of the east and the west is not. it’s in the names of the continents: Westeros, Essos. one is made up of familiar western fantasy and medieval tropes, the other is, well, other, and made up of a range of orientalist tropes. it’s in the food, the clothes, the sex, the accents, the religion, the everything. it is there. we have to reckon with that.

and if people are somehow blaming the presence of these tropes on Daenerys herself, that’s very much on them. it is extremely reductive to use these critiques as your pedestal in a stan war. it only shows that you do not even understand the argument at stake here. but if we refuse to acknowledge the orientalism in the story for the sake of defending a white character: that is also extremely reductive.

A year has passed since the October 7 war, the Gaza Strip war. In this war, Ammar Hammad was born in harsh conditions. He was 3 months old and could not breastfeed from his mother because she suffers from asthma in the lungs and no milk comes down in her udder. There is a report from Nasser Hospital about this. Ammar needs about 10 packs of milk to help him live in these conditions, in addition to diapers and his special clothes. “My name is Eslam from Gaza, I’m 29 years old, and I’m a children teacher from Khan Yunis in the Gaza Strip. a mother of two daughters, Hanaa 5 years old, and Alma, 10 months old. My husband Rasmi is the director of 3 language and training centers. In this war, our house was completely destroyed and razed to the ground, and my husband’s centers were blown up. He lost his job, and we were completely displaced, and we are now homeless and jobless, My two young daughters constantly suffer from diseases due to malnutrition and water pollution.

Danger and death surround us all day and all night. We have lost everything and depend on donations to survive and, most of all, to have any hope of escaping this genocide and evacuating to safety in Egypt. The cost of daily living continues to rise significantly in Gaza - imagine that we cannot find the type of milk for our daughter because of its high price. There is no kind of detergent and this is the cause of skin diseases for my two little girls. We bought a piece of soap for $30! ، and detergent is 100$.

Attached for you are pictures of how our lives have changed since October 7th.

Please help. Any funds raised will be used in daily survival and if enough is raised, to be able to evacuate Gaza.

Abdulrahman @3bdulra7manosama is a medical student from Gaza who managed to evacuate to Egypt in May before the border closed, but he did so without his family, in order to achieve his dreams and help his people.

At a time where we keep hearing news of the atrocities inflicted upon health professionals by the IOF, it is incredible that young people like Abdulrahman are not deterred from their dreams of serving their people. And he has the opportunity to continue pursuing this dream, but to do so, he needs out help.

He aims to raise €5900 for the international student fees at Alexandria University (yearly $4000 fee + various processing fees). Documents and details of his acceptance are in this post (same post as the one linked in par. 1) and a breakdown of the other fees he has to pay in this post.

Deadline for this is on the 30th of November. As of the time of writing, the GFM has raised just €2,562 (long-term goal of €30k), with only 2 donations in the past 24 hours. A further €3308 is needed so that Abdulrahman can enroll this incoming academic year.

This post on Waleed's blog includes snippets of their life before the current genocidal bombardment and what has since happened to their apartment complex.
