With current technology, Mass. Geological Survey says fracking is a "probably not" for the type of shale deposits we have in the Connecticut River Valley. However, technology evolves and I'm sure the gas companies are working on ways to extract gas from thin, fractured deposits like ours. When there is a request for the first exploratory well, we'll know the gas companies are drawing a bead on us. This page is a good FAQ on shale gas basics.

Dreadful Dreams of Fracking
I wake with a pounding headache. I dreamed we were all at my parent's house--my family and future in-laws. There were workmen channeling the yard to let frackwater run through--it had become required by law. There were tall grasses like young wheat and trees lining the snakelike channel. We kept working at buffers before the water ran. I was worried the channels didn't seem deep enough and in one corner I kept thinking the wastewater would run over when it started to flow. I was quickly making plans to plant a green swale around it. But one of my brothers told me there would be no use once the wastewater ran. The dream ends.
We cannot create frackwastewater, we cannot release these frack chemicals into our Earth and our water. In the end, only death and disease is certain.

Massachusetts Fracking News Service -- Monitoring & Online News Coverage
Great place to get the news on Mass. and what's nearby to us. latest news is Connecticut is making headway on outlawing dumping of frack wastewater from NY and PA within it's borders. Way to go CT--make a stand! Bill passed the House and now needs to pass the State Senate by May 7th. I would be happy for MA to follow this lead.

This video is by Josh Fox, who made Gasland, about New York fracking. It's New York frack gas, etc..., that Tennessee Gas wants to pipe through Massachusetts from Richmond to Dracut. NO. HELL NO.

Quote
"The previously unreleased document from an employee at the Environmental Protection Agency’s regional office found that drilling or fracking, in which water, sand and chemicals are shot underground to free trapped gas, caused methane to leak into domestic water wells in Dimock, Pennsylvania. The findings contradict Cabot Oil and Gas Corp., which drilled in the town and said the explosive methane gas was naturally occurring."
