just so everyone's aware, a lot of people are suggesting and talking about 'odysee' as a youtube alternative rn. and while it can be a fix for anyone looking to 'boycott' youtube, pls don't mistake it as a permanent solution or fix bc they IMMEDIATELY made crypto shit available when payment processors started shitting on everyone.
they're ALSO the enemy cos they're using environment killing blockchain bs but also i have no doubt the entire platform is made from tech bros and given the average content shoved to my face without algo curation, it doesn't seem like it has the most open minded and compassionate userbase.
i'm seeing SEVERAL youtubers migrating over there, especially ones that have recently been called out in controversy for lying to their audiences for years. consider odysee the 'kick' to twitch where everyone who's been banned or doesn't give a shit about any kind of rules, morals or anything, go to kick to stream cos kick allows anything and everything over there.
(or even the xiaohongshu of tiktok cos everyone was so quick to run over there, probably ruin the app for people who were already on it, and then ran back to tiktok when it wasn't being shut down. more people than not are prolly just chasing the engagement cos that's what happens when everyone finds a new app they think they can rush to the finish line to monetize)

THIS x1000!
again i will say, i follow a lot of GROWN. ADULTS. trying to get gender affirming surgeries, treatments and medications AND CANNOT BC THEY CANNOT AFFORD THEM. idk who believes that they're just handing out free transitions to CHILDREN.
but also, intersex people are FORCED to confirm to a binary gender. gender police cis people annoy the piss out of me.

know what's also funny about this 'scrub the internet to be safe for kids'
the nintendo eshop.
shit is FULL of hentai shovelware and none of these companies and pearl clutching republicans seem concerned about a console more targeted to children letting so much bullshit exist on their shop page. and even if u make an account a 'child' account, it doesn't REMOVE the hentai, u just can't click on them.
also disney app cos it's full of mature shows now.

this video is really dumb actually.
talks about how free youtube used to be where it didn't cater to investors and advertisers so people could put up whatever they wanted and not have to step on eggshells to make content.
promotes instagram accounts (both their own and someone else's) instagram is ALSO a horrible awful platform run by horrible awful people who, if they are not already censoring or requiring privacy violations to access, they WILL.
and then proceeds to say they work full time at amazon.
how is this standing up to the companies? change starts with actually changing first. u can't claim to be standing against these bad acting companies when u are still standing two feet in all their stuff. people aren't willing to give up their platforms cos they can't stand the thought of not getting numbers (y'know, how youtube used to be where people just made stuff for fun and it didn't matter if people saw it or not cos it wasn't about making numbers)
people conflate having numbers to having some kind of worth and everyone needs to deconstruct that. i've literally seen someone on reddit recently ask how they get popular on tumblr and that's the most bizarre thing i've EVER seen cos no one i have ever known to be on tumblr is here for numbers.
START WITH GETTING COMFORTABLE WITH SMALLER PLATFORMS THAT DON'T GET SEEN. if u can't handle that, then there's no hope in anyone trying to stand up to these companies cos they KNOW how addicted everyone is to their platforms (it's by design after all) and if they just stall out long enough (they've got enough money to do that and if they don't they'll just fire more people to make up for it), people will come crawling back bc they can't let got of the social media addiction. (look at how many people never left twitter even tho that app has ALWAYS been a giant trash heap and it's an entire landfill now filled with nazis and how many people have GONE BACK TO IT KNOWING THAT.)
youtube
REQUIRED READING FOR EVERYONE!
WATCH. THIS. VIDEO. THE WHOLE THING.
Change starts with the people.

Censorship:
The internet is being censored, we cannot stand for this. DO NOT LET POLITICIANS GUILT TRIP YOU, INTO BELIEVING YOU’LL BE A PEDO, OR A PREDATOR FOR NOT SUPPORTING THESE ACTS!! YOU ARE NOT FIGHTING FOR THE RIGHTS OF PREDATORS, BUT OUR FREE SPEACH!! Censorship never ends well, the governments of the world need to realize we’re not afraid to revolt.

i mean. u do need age verification for PH where i live (USA) and it's been that way for months before this current wave of bs.
i agree that censorship is not about protection but that bit is incorrect in some places and likely will be the same for everywhere trying to force everyone to give up their privacy.
what's wild to me is that no one is coming for advertisers who have CRAZY ads that children are likely to see in 'child friendly spaces'. there's very inappropriate ads on cable television and even during some little league sports broadcast my dad had on, they had very inappropriate ads that mom pointed out children are probably also watching that particular showing bc it was of other younger people.
they wanna come for places where it's ADULTS ONLY AND ADULTS ARE FOLLOWING THE RULES BUT KIDS PARENTS AREN'T MAKING SURE THEIR CHILDREN AREN"T ON THESE SITES CLEARLY NOT MEANT FOR THEM but miraculously no one cares about everywhere else that children are subject to adult themes that makes companies money. curious how that works.
so censorship as a whole is a fuckd up concept, bug since everyone's talking about the UK shit I'm going to talk about their inspiration.
Australian legislation is banning social media for those aged under sixteen years and requiring age verification - active by the end of 2025.
but you don't need verification to see gambling ads
you don't need age verification to get onto pornhub.
censorship was never and will never be about protection.

they are barring wikipedia. they are barring spotify. they are barring important news - both national news and world news. they are barring mental health forums and LGBTQ related things and so much more. this is not about protecting children, it has never been about protecting children.
the online safety act is an insane privacy breach, and if that does not scare you then you need to think harder about it. it is going to end up in a massive data leak - all the information is getting collected by random third party systems. can we trust them? no. can we even hold them accountable? no. because the government couldn’t even make their own system to do these age checks.
and i hear you - it is important that kids don’t see porn. but even if all this was about protecting kids, it’s sloppy and useless. it’s easy (for now) to get around with a vpn and the only thing the act doing is censoring things that it shouldnt. if the government wanted to protect kids, they would do something concrete about it - they would be putting more funding into education, for example.
of course the policy isnt called “national surveillance”. they’re not going to call it that. everything will be hidden behind things that people want.
so email your MP, and tell other people that this is WAY more than blocking porn from children - this is the first step towards national surveillance.

They're trying to bring back KOSA here in the States because OSA successfully passed in the UK. CALL YOUR REPS AND YOUR SENATORS. This would affect fandom. Fanfiction and fanart would no longer be as easily accessible. It's also most definitely going to affect queer people and shows, movies, books, and music that contain queer themes.
You would need to enter your ID to access any of these, which is obviously a horrible idea, considering what the government and world are like right now. They're saying its for the sake of children's safety online. It isn't. It's to monitor what you're doing while you're on the internet and to block you from accessing shit they dont want you to see. It's a mass censorship and surveillance bill.
It's so fucking important that you use your voices right now. Do not stay silent. Call, call, call. Call after business hours so you don't have to speak to anyone if you don't want to. Call frequently. Be as polite and well-spoken as you're able. Let them know how it makes you feel. Tell them how unnecessary it is. Write yourself a script and read it if you have to! JUST CALL.
A child's safety online is the responsibility of their guardian(s). It's not ours.

When I was a kid, my parents taught me to never give out personal information, especially ID, online
Now websites will demand it
That will still be a huge ' NO! ' for me

im being good and calling my representatives to oppose KOSA and I have a shitty script, use it anyway, you can easily connect with their offices through stopkosa.org, calling is supposed to be helpful, please aid me in my fight to annoy these people
My name is (legal name) I am a (state) constituent, (zip code) and I am calling to urge you to oppose the Kids Online Safety Act.
Even though there have been significant promising changes to the bill, KOSA still fails to address the root issues related to kid’s safety online, and furthermore puts everyone at risk. While I support efforts to protect children online, this bill overreaches in ways that will harm the right to privacy and freedom of speech.
We’ve already seen how poorly this kind of policy plays out abroad. The United Kingdom passed a similar law, the Online Safety Act, which has since faced immense public backlash. A petition calling for its repeal has already surpassed its goal by more than four hundred thousand signatures. The U.S. has an even larger population, if this kind of law sparks that level of concern in the UK, we can expect far greater unrest here.
KOSA would require online platforms to verify the ages of their users, forcing us to hand over sensitive personal information, like government-issued IDs, just to access everyday websites. This kind of data collection creates massive security risks. This information could be exploited for unprecendented levels of identity theft, fraud, and surveillance.
As an adult, I should not be forced to compromise my privacy or safety to use the internet. Age-verification mandates like those in KOSA set a dangerous precedent and open the door to widespread monitoring and censorship under the guise of child protection.
There are better ways to help kids stay safe online without sacrificing the rights and privacy of millions of adults while allowing for the exposure of such sensitive data to malicious hackers.
Please oppose the Kids Online Safety Act. Thank you for your time.

Don’t give up
Don’t ever give up
If you care about the things you love, the things that make you happy, art and creativity, and freedom of speech
Keep calling your senators and tell them to oppose KOSA, the Screen act, the Block Beard bill, and the Take It Down Act.
If you live in the UK keep calling your senators and tell them to oppose OSA
And email YouTube and tell them that you do not want their AI and ID age verification
