McFly July Day 13: Getting a Perm
This could be set in either timeline, but I think I'm leaning toward Lone Pine. Marty is five.
When Marty had initially been told he was going to spend the whole day with his grandparents, he’d been over the moon.
Nobody had told him part of the day would be spent with Grandma Stella at the beauty salon.
“How much longer?” Marty asks, watching as the stylist rolls a section of Grandma’s hair into another curler. “We’ve been here like, ten hours already.”
“It’s only been about twenty-five minutes, hon. And we’ll be out of here before you know it. Diane here is the best of the best.”
Marty glances up at Diane, and the woman flashes him a smile. He returns it, even though he isnt very reassured by Grandma’s words. Diane sure is taking her sweet time putting those rollers in.
“Well, maybe I can help. Then, it’ll be done even faster.” He holds out his hand for a roller, met only with laughter from everyone around. He isn’t sure why; he was very serious about the offer.
“Oh, Stella, he is precious,” another woman—also with a head full of rollers—says from across the salon. “And so advanced for his age. Well, he can’t be older than my own grandbaby. Around three, yes?”
“Hey! I'm—”
Grandma Stella reaches out and takes hold of his arm, shushing him gently before addressing her friend.
“Marty will be six next month, actually.”
The woman with the rollers sets a hand on the side of her face. “Well, I’ll be. He’s just an itty-bitty thing.”
Marty sends a pleading look Stella’s way.
“He’s my sweet, big boy,” his grandmother replies, then lowers her voice. “Just sit tight, Marty. We’ll go get ice cream after I’m done here.”
Marty’s face brightens, the promise of ice cream suddenly making this whole terrible, boring ordeal much more tolerable. It also helps when the roller lady is finished, though she stops to pinch his cheeks before she leaves.
And Diane grows on him. She lets him sit in one of the empty salon chairs and spin around, which is fun.
Eventually, Grandma Stella, says, “Alright, I’d say it’s time for ice cream.” She hops out of her chair with a flourish and fluffs her newly curled hair. “How do I look?”
“Beautiful.”
One hand goes to her heart, the other hand taking hold of his own. “And for that, you get to order however many scoops you want.”

I couldn't leave this lovely lady out. I freaking love Jennifer. She is a queen and a wonderful girlfriend for Marty.
Though as is probably obvious, I did put in some extra outfits because honestly, I would've liked to have seen Jenn get in on the action with Marty. Do not misunderstand, I love the movies as they are. I'm just saying it would've been cool if Jenn could've had a biiiit more autonomy instead of just being knocked out most of the time. She doesn't have to be an action hero like Marty but more so help out where she can in her own way. So, hence we get some hypothetical outfits if she had been allowed to tag along. 2015 was prolly the hardest since I didn't have a ton to work with fashion wise since I'm working off what the movies offered. I ran with that and made some tweaks since I wanted her outfit to be as nice as Marty's. Then 1885 was easier since I had plenty of references of 1880's fashion to look at. And of course, couldn't leave out Citizen Brown Jenn. She was honestly a lot of fun to draw. <3 And... that's all I got.
I might expand on how I imagine Jenn could've tagged along but that'll be a story for another day.
For now, hope you enjoy.

McFly July Day 3: Birthday
Post-trilogy, Lone Pine timeline
Pleased as he is to be back at his garage for the day, Doc finds himself wishing he’d at least spent a little time tidying up more. He’d done some, but evidently not enough to keep a cardboard box stacked with papers out of his direct path.
He manages to avoid it with a quick pivot and a full spin, keeping the cake from toppling to the floor. Across the room at the table, Marty gives him a brief round of applause.
“Hey, nice save, Doc.”
“Thank you!” He sets the cake down carefully. “I’m sorry it’s a little lopsided. When I was removing it from the pan, it stuck to—”
Marty holds up a hand. “No worries, Doc. I love it. The sprinkles look…very meticulously placed.”
“I may or may not have gotten sidetracked during the baking process and invented a device specifically for evenly distributing sprinkles onto a cake.” Doc reaches into his pocket and pulls out the small box of candles he’d picked up on his drive over.
“Doc, you don’t have to do the candles.”
“Nonsense. What’s a birthday cake without candles?”
One by one, Doc surveys the perfect spot to place each candle—Marty watching intently. He’s got them all down, and eight lit, when the boy suddenly speaks up.
“Doc?”
“Hmm?”
“Today’s not really my birthday, is it?”
Doc pauses, the lighter inches above the next candle. “What’s that?” he asks, despite having heard the question loud and clear.
“Today isn’t my birthday anymore,” he repeats, head tilted in that way Doc knows means he’s thinking deeply about something. “Well, I mean, it technically is, but—” He shrugs. “It isn’t. Time travel and all that, right?”
“Um…well—”
“And when you account for when I left and when I got back, there’s a total of what?” His mouth moves silently as he counts. “Sixteen? Seventeen days out of sync? I’ve been eighteen for over two weeks already.”
Doc sets the lighter aside, braces his palms on the tabletop and releases a huff. “Yes, that’s quite right.”
“And your birthday,” Marty adds, eyes widening a bit. “Do you even know when it is anymore?”
“I—well, I’ve backtracked and calculated it, yes.”
Quiet settles between them for several long seconds before Marty breaks it.
“Huh. Weird.”
“Indeed, it is, my boy.”
They watch as the candles burn down, wax dripping dangerously close to the strawberry buttercream frosting.
Marty sucks in a breath and blows out the lit candles in one try.
“Just cut the cake, Doc.”

We've been doing this for five years??? Back to the Future was released forty years ago on July 3rd 1985, and every July for the past five years we've gotten together this way to celebrate!
There’s a prompt each day - try one, some, or all. Poetry, fanfic, songs, friendship bracelets, cosplay, aesthetics, anything BTTF is welcome!
Just tag your creations #mcflyjuly so we can find and share them!
This year: 🎉 Because it's Back to the Future's 40th birthday, there are 40 prompts! The last 9 are secret, and will be revealed randomly throughout the month. Each one will post at 12 noon EST on this blog, so keep an eye out--you never know what day a surprise prompt will drop. 👀
and Because it's McFly July's 5th birthday, we're gonna party like Doc & Marty! 🍔👑 No one should know too much about their future, so I can't say much here, but if I reblog/reply to a McFly July post of yours with a burger emoji, that's a sign you'll be getting a little something in your inbox!
Have fun and please don't drive 88!

I am now 5k words deep into this.
An unforeseen consequence of writing for an AU you haven't published for in 2 years is that you've grown as a writer (yay) and now reading your old writing gives you psychic damage (boo), which gives you the urge to re-write the original fanfic, but every time you think about making a change, you have to consider if it's actually an improvement over the original and what sort of ripple effect will happen because of it, so now you're just like:
