How To Plan An Amazing Family Reunion
10/27/2020
Family Reunion Like a ProPlanning a family reunion at a North Conway, NH can be stressful, annoying, and awful...but they typically lead to some great laughs and wonderful memories!
Once you figure out the details and plan a family reunion, it's on to enjoying time with loved ones that you don't typically get to see very often.
Family reunion vacations in North Conway, NH come in all shapes and sizes. I have hosted some family reunions with 4 generations represented and others are adults only.
Every type of family reunion has it's own challenges and rewards.

Let's face it, some of your family members are folks you don't even like. It's really hard if one of those people are the family elders! There's nothing like a mad Granny but on the other hand, most grandmothers are happy just to see their kids and grandkids.
My Incredible 30 Year History of Family Reunions
I've been renting my New Hampshire cabin rental called Four Seasons Lodge for almost 30 years.
Most of the wonderful groups have been family reunions celebrating a milestone birthday or anniversary.I was always in charge of organizing the large family reunion get-togethers of the year in my family so I feel your pain in planning a family reunion.
I always say that trying to get a group of people together is like herding cats!
What makes it even worse is getting them to agree on dates, location of the family reunion, amenities of the venue, and scads of other decisions!
Teena - A Little Bit OCD and a Dash of Rock and Roll!
I jokingly tell everyone that calls for information about Four Seasons Lodge that you and I have the same kind of personalities.
I mean it too!
Think about it, you're reading this because you are in charge of finding a North Conway vacation rental that will make multiple personalities smile!
Sound like an impossible task?  Nah, not for someone like you that has a touch of OCD, is a task master, is high energy, and loves to have a fabulous time.
You have all the skills to "git 'er done" and I'm just the gal to help you!
I want you to get past the planning part with as few hitches as possible and onto the enjoying part.  That way you are ready to go down memory lane while simultaneously creating new memories with your family.
Family reunions can be the bane of our existence if we allow them to get the better of us, but that doesn't mean they are.
From that one grumpy, crazy Uncle to Auntie OCD we have to juggle several balls just to spend time with these crazy people.
And why?  Why do we subject ourselves to such tortures?  Because they are our family and that should be a good enough reason.  In this day and age we all lead extremely busy lives and our family members move all over the place.
That means you see much less of each other as time goes by and family reunions rarely get planned--and no one wants that!  Or maybe you do, I don't know you so who am I to say?
But you have to see them at some point and with a family reunion you can get it all out of the way at once!Reasons for Planning Family Reunions
No matter what your reason is, you have made it a point to see your family--so make it enjoyable.
Yeah, this could include chosen and un-chosen family, family you adore and family you don't really get along with... but nevertheless they are important people in your life.
Take this time to mend old arguments, create new arguments, or just spend some sincere quality time with your loved ones.
Before I begin to list off all of the why's and how to's of planning a family reunion here is one of the most important things to keep in mind: add humor.
Add humor often and whenever possible.
You're there to enjoy each other!  Not to have arguments, land disputes and will readings.  Or maybe you are there for those things, in which case some lightheartedness will be much appreciated. Most family reunions celebrated at Four Seasons Lodge are milestone birthdays or anniversaries.
Sometimes though, they are planned to celebrate a family member's life and love while that family member is still alive or has recently passed.
Not all family reunions are created out of happiness.  Unfortunately, we all fall on hard times but those hard times are the best reason to get together as a whole.

Old Fashioned Family ReunionThe Surprising Reason Why You Must Hold A Family Reunion
Love of course!  Why else would we subject ourselves to spending time with our families?
Familial love is a thing to be celebrated, cherished and enjoyed! Even with all of the crazies and loonies that we have in our families, and believe me that does not exclude yourself, we have to celebrate the love that is there!
So get over yourself and your petty disputes and cherish one another.  You only have one life to live so make it enjoyable and surround yourself with love. Speaking of loonies and crazies... the women on my mothers side of the family, including my dear mother herself, believed that everyone in the world was weird--except them.  They honestly believed that they were normal.  HA! Yeah right!  My family is filled with just as many wackadoos as any other and that includes the women!
Now, I'm pretty sure I convinced my mother otherwise but my grandmother, God rest her soul, carried that belief straight to her grave.  Don't get me wrong she was an amazing woman but that does not exclude her from being a big ol' weirdo like the rest of us.
And yes, us means you as well.  Don't kid yourself like all of the loony women in my family--we're all weird!
Besides, who wants to be normal?  It sounds boring. As I mentioned before there are plenty of reasons to bring your own Army of Maniacs together to party.
We already went over the more sad or sentimental reasons so now we're on the fun ones!
One main reason to plan a family reunion is to give all of the kids a chance to get to know their more distant relatives; aunts, uncles, cousins etc.  Without this type of special bonding the kids might feel estranged from their family.
Maybe they'll keep the tradition going because they'll have created such fond memories together!  This could be your legacy!
The second reason is to mercilessly judge any new family members... no, no not the babies you monster!
Spouses, girlfriends, boyfriends, fiances, and maybe your third cousins yippie Pomeranian are awaiting your judgement.
It's always exciting to welcome new family members to your clan and family reunions are great opportunities to do that.  They can meet and fall in love with your family or you can decide you dislike them and promptly scare them off.
Once upon a time, I had a boyfriend visit my sister with me and we ate lobster, which he never had before, and it scarred him for life.
My sister laughs about it to this day because he was so offended.  Besides, how do you grow up in New England and never eat lobster?  I digress...To sum all of that up: family reunions are great for seeing relatives you never see, new relatives, potential new relatives or it's just for the kids.
No matter what the reason is reunions make for good stories, memories and maybe a few solid migraines.
So, whether your family reunions are an annual gathering, a spontaneous venture, or to celebrate an important family members birthday or anniversary you are there because of love!
PLAN YOUR REUNION
How Do I Even Begin to Plan a Family Reunion?
Step one is complete.  You have your reason... or maybe you don't.
Either way you've read all the way to step two so you are undoubtedly inspired and just like every good book character you desire something.
And true to it's word, just like every good author, life makes your desire ridiculously difficult to attain--or they kill you.  Authors love killing their beloved characters and as readers we all cry and throw our books at walls.
Planning a family reunion might make you cry and throw things too but you can do it!  I promise that it isn't impossible.
Step two is figuring out how exactly to organize the chaos--and I am here to help!  Now step two is really a bunch of steps tied together so hold onto your hats. 1. First and foremost start early.
Everyone and their mother, possibly including your own, will have conflicts and complaints.
The earlier you begin to plan your family reunion the easier it will be for everyone to prepare both mentally and physically.  It's easier to ask for work off and which soccer games the kids might miss if you give out potential dates early on.
I suggest taking a poll and giving three options for dates to see how many people agree to which one.
2. Some are born to lead and some are born to follow.
Find the
Virgos
,
Leos
and
Aries
in your group and dub them team captains!
Try to make sure they are people who work well together because you don't want to deal with more arguments than you have to.  So choose wisely and in the words of
The Hunger Games
, "May the odds be ever in your favor."3. Pick the right destination for your reunion.
This can be one of the more difficult decisions when it comes to planning large group getaways.  You want everyone to be happy, the space/location to be enjoyable, and you want to make sure there is plenty of room for everyone.
Is your family full of outdoorsy people?  Owners of RV's and state-of-the-art camping equipment?  Does everyone love outdoor sports?  Are they history fanatics, shoppers or foodies?  Or even better, are they introverts who just want to read a book laying by the lake, sitting in a ski lodge, or just in any big comfy chair they can find?  Say what you will but they are the easiest ones to accommodate.
Realistically, you'll have more than one type of person in your family--especially if you have a very large family.
You have to find a destination that will suit the majority and you and your team captains (who should be decisive people) can work together to make the final decision. 4. Choose the right accommodations for your group.
I've said it before and I'll say it more: family reunions are like herding cats.
Even professionals get eaten!  Laugh all you want but if your house cat was bigger it would've killed you already.  Trust me, it's science!
Anyway, as you know, cats are impossible to herd.  Just try it, I dare you!  They're lone rangers, independent, and judgy creatures.  Just Youtube people trying to
walk their cats
!  You'll get sucked into a Youtube hole and be entertained for hours.  Whether you waste time on Youtube or not, cats are impossible and so is your family... NOT.
You can herd your family if you're assertive and up to dealing with their BS.
Finding accommodations for large groups is difficult--but not impossible.
Once you pin down your location you have already made your job a little easier.  Now you have to research and choose between the accommodations that are available in the area.  You can pick camping, a hotel, motel, or a
vacation rental
.A great thing to weigh-in when you're choosing a spot to stay is meals.
How close do you need to be to
restaurants
?  Who has different diets and
allergies
that you need to be aware of?  Are you trying to cook throughout your reunion?
Plan now!  Don't be lazy and wait until the last minute.  Planning your food options beforehand will help you decide what type of accommodations you might need.
If you plan on cooking you'll know to get a spot with a large kitchen or grilling area.
If you plan on eating out for every meal than a hotel can easily suffice your needs.
Camping means you need solid equipment and food prepared way beforehand--and for such a large group that is a whole other step.  Is that something you want to deal with?
Who would be in charge of meals?  It all needs to be weighed in while you're figuring out where you want to stay. 5. Consider childcare options.
Do you need to keep the gremlins fed well before midnight and under constant supervision?  Or are their older kids and grandparents who are perfectly capable of babysitting?  Although, grandparents may feed them after midnight because they're trying to spoil them... so be careful!
Luckily, you will most likely have an adult/teenager that doesn't want to partake in an activity because they're too cool for it.  If that's not the case (because they're trying to enjoy themselves too) then do preliminary research on your outside-of-the-family options.
Don't be that rude planner who just leaves the kids in the parents arms.  They deserve a break!6. Be the
Leslie Knope
(from the brilliant show Parks and Recreation) of the trip and have color-coded binder that hold your itinerary.
Take a poll from your family or ask them what they'd like to do and give them a deadline.  Or just ask the team captains!  OR be a control freak, ask no one anything, and decide what the family itinerary is.
Personally, I pick control freak just because it seems the easiest.  Then the others can complain and try to add stuff and you can bulldozer over them and ignore everyone.
No, I'm joking.  Next-to-no-one is ever happy if you choose this option.
Be inclusive but organized and decisive. 7. Don't ask for permission, ask for forgiveness!
Be assertive, decisive and maybe a little OCD but remember that it is of utmost importance to be mindful of others.  Make decisions but remember to ask for forgiveness and forgive others.
Don't create any unnecessary hostility during your family reunion.
There's already going to be a potential for drama--rivalries, kids getting in trouble, in-laws, new boyfriends/girlfriends, you name it!
Be forgiving. 8.  How long should you be cooped up with a ton of people you don't always get to see?
What a tough question to answer.  Personally, I believe the shorter the better.  I mean, not less than 24 hours because you still need to enjoy each other, but don't overdue it.
Your overzealous need for some down time should not cloud your judgement.  I know you want to dedicate your entire week to your family but it isn't recommended.
The best amount of time to be cooped up in "crazy-ville" is about three days.
That's not just my own advice.
Ninkovich
says that "your next reunion will benefit if you leave them wanting more."
Family Reunion Games - Bubbles!9. Last but not least, on our ninth step of step two is figuring out what to do!
Things to do
during a family reunion are the toughest things to plan.
The ultimate question besides why am I related to these lovely wackos is what can we all do together to create wonderful memories for years to come?
Talk about pressure.  I don't know about you put I'm a sucker for team games.  It's me and my husband against the world and we love winning!
Pictionary
,
Taboo
,
Cranium
,
Family Feud
--all of these games are great options to beat your annoyingly competitive cousins from North Carolina.
A cheap, no fuss, ice breaker is to pass out small bottles of bubbles and head outside to load the air with bubbles!
I bet you'll have tons of fun plus you'll get some great pictures too!Whenever no one wanted to play games my cousin and I would play a card game called
Spit
.  It's a great thing to do when killing time during awkward family visits.
We could play an entire game in 2 minutes flat and leave with some red palms from slapping the cards too hard...but it was always worth it.
Spit is a great game to have a tournament for or to play while everyone else is being poopy.  All you need are two decks of cards and one willing opponent.
Another great thing to do is create a family trivia game.
Send a questionnaire to all of your family members to gather intel.  During the reunion split everyone into groups and play the game!  Get creative and make it fun.
You might learn something new about your beloved family members--but that doesn't mean you will like the information, so be wary!

How To Get People Off Their Phones And Talking With Each Other
I'll let you in on a secret here, if you're vacationing at
Four Seasons Lodge
there's an easy way to have everyone looking up instead of down.  Flip our hidden switch to turn off the WiFi and you'll have your kids or partner engaging in fun because they cannot get on Facebook!
When I check the Lodge after folks check-out, the WiFi switch is usually turned off.  Go figure.  HA!If you've picked a gorgeous location like North Conway, NH to host your family reunion, plan ahead so you have family friendly activities planned that even the "gamers" will enjoy. Is it beautiful outside?
Put on some comfy boots or sneakers, pack a lunch, and go for a hike.
If your gang isn't in the best physical shape, plan ahead and research hikes that are on the flatter and shorter side or just go for a walk.
Bring a camera and take lots of photos because cousin Emma may never accept a hiking invite again!Do you have some water rats on your invite list?  See if there's anywhere to rent tubes or kayaks and plan a lazy day on a river somewhere.
I'll be you'll find a rope swing along your journey - challenge grumpy Uncle Ed to try it out.  Get that camera ready!
Or just rent Four Seasons Lodge and enjoy our heated, indoor pool! But I digress...
Family reunioning in a winter wonderland?
Take a poll to see if folks would rather snowshoe, ski, snowmobile or ice skate.
Usually you can get group rates with a group size starting at 10 folks.  That's a great way to save money so you can all have a beverage or two after you work your flabby muscles past the point of no return. If your gang is into team sports, get out there and play ball!  Kickball, dodge ball, volleyball, soccer, whatever!
Get outdoors and sweat.  Burn off those calories from your moms famous brownies.  If ball games aren't your favorite and you're trying way too hard to be the "cool uncle" then make a slight shift to water balloons.
A good old fashioned water balloon fight is way better when you add teams and super soakers and believe me, as the "cool aunt", I'm just speaking from experience.  It's more of a water war than a water balloon fight in my family and it is worth it on a hot summer day!
Have buckets of "ammo" on each side of the playing field and have everyone start in the middle.  If you have trees and obstacles to hide behind it just elevates the fun.Another great outdoor activity to do is a scavenger hunt.
You can be an overachiever, like me, and make it super difficult but highly rewarding by stashing a hundred dollar bill somewhere and whoever finds it keeps it!
Or if only the adults are playing then you can hide little alcohol bottles (nips as we call them here in New England), or candy if it's the kids.
You can make a scavenger hunt as basic or intricate as you wish.  You can have everyone work individually or in teams but no matter what make sure there is a fun prize at the end!  Incentive boosts morale.
You could even make it native to the area like having them find a type of leaf, fire wood, or wild mushrooms.  And if you're like me than you can stash riddles everywhere.  Just tell them their first clue and they're off!Do you have a family full of talent?  Or at least a group that's overly-confident?
Put on a talent show!  Your own crazy uncle can sing an inappropriate song, your cousin can dance and you can enjoy a bunch of stand up comedy full of dad jokes by you-know-who.
It doesn't matter if there is genuine talent, no talent, or a mix of both.  A family talent show will create memories to last a lifetime.
Plus, maybe you'll create a tradition to embarrass the young ones for years to come.
I live for embarrassing the young ones! That's the main reason I added a Karaoke machine to my New Hampshire cabin rental called Four Seasons Lodge.
You should hear folks belting out a tune (badly) and everyone laughing!
If you want more equally embarrassing, but equally fun games to play, then invest in
Speak Out.
 You've probably seen it on
Ellen
.  It's the game with the funny mouth pieces and it's hilarious!
Another great awkward game is one you can make at home.  The Banana Game is an absolute riot!
Have the willing victims make a line, tie a string around their waist with a banana tied to it (make sure the string is long enough for it to almost touch the ground) and the players have to use the bananas to hit the ball across the finish line.
It'll give you memories to last a lifetime!A good old fashioned egg race is another great homemade game!
Pick partners and give them two spoons and an egg.  The first runner puts the egg on their spoon, puts the spoon in their mouth and runs to their teammate without dropping the egg.  Once they reach their partner they have to transfer the egg to their teammates spoon before they run to the finish line.  The first one across it wins!
I once played it more like a relay race but on horseback.  You had to go around a barrel and, thankfully, the spoon was just in your hand.  Another great way is to blindfold one person and then you have to guide them with your voice.

3 Reasons To Host a Family Reunion In A New Hampshire Cabin Rental
I know you've been to reunions where everyone has their own hotel/motel room or cabin but I'm going to explain the benefits of renting a huge lodge or
vacation rental
and having the whole place to yourself.
1.  Kitchen
Yes, I said it.  A Kitchen.  You don't know me but I am a terrible cook, don't care much about food, but love to watch people cook.
When I'm part of a family reunion, I'm the one sitting there chatting with those that are sequestered to the kitchen to whip up something delicious.
I'm at the ready if they need someone to hold a strainer so they can pour in the spaghetti or chop a veggie or two so they can attend to the stir fry.
I love watching people do things they are skilled at.  I could NEVER take a few veggies and a dob of meat and present my hungry family with a stir fry creation!
That's really not the most important reason to rent a venue with a kitchen.  In no particular order, here are my thoughts:
save money on eating out
little tykes won't get scolded for crying at a meal at home
people like me can take a tiny portion and keep the conversation going at the table
you don't have to listen to that stupid Muzak in a restaurant
allergy sensitive folks won't put themselves at risk
bring frozen meals like lasagna or chili to heat up
2.  Save Money
Yes, save money!  Add up 10 or so rooms in a resort and I know you can find a great vacation rental for much less.
Book directly with the owner of that vacation rental so you don't have pay Airbnb/VRBO/TripAdvisor/etc their huge
Service Fees.
Eat most meals at the venue rather than dropping hundreds a day on meals.
3.  More Bonding, Memories, Pictures, and Laughs
Last but certainly not least, the best memories are made at the end of the day reminiscing about the day's adventures!
Gather round the fireplace or cuddle up on the couches and tell stories, reminisce, listen to Grandma's stories, and get to know new and old relatives!
If you all head back to a hotel room every night because there's no place where the whole family (including infants) to gather and relax, you are missing out on some special memories.
Lastly, all the awesome games I described above won't get played.  I'm NOT a game person but when someone coerces me to play, I always have a fantastic time!I bought
Four Seasons Lodge
as the result of planning many family reunions.
I know the headaches, the joys, and the fruits of hard labor that come with getting your entire family into one place.
Look what came out of mine?  I found our prime location and bought it!
But I still want to share it with others who may be struggling to find their space like me and that's how I came to have the business I have today.
My NH cabin rental is not for sale, but it may be the perfect place for your family vacation.  The showpiece of the entire Lodge is our heated INDOOR pool!  It's heated to 81 degrees year-round and even grumpy old Uncle Ed will enjoy a swim after dinner.
Everyone wants their own private space?  Perfect, we have 10 bedrooms with sleeping for the 20 fun relatives you plan to invite to your family reunion!
Located in North Conway, NH, Four Seasons Lodge is set in a perfect location (in my opinion anyway).  It's tucked in a private spot off a scenic byway, minutes to
world class outlet shopping
,
great restaurants
, 7 awesome
ski resorts
, and great
hiking
.
We are locals and live, work, and play in the White Mountains.  Hit us up if you need suggestions of things to do in North Conway or check out our
blogs
.
I love to say to folks that are tearing their hair out trying to please everyone in their family by choosing the BEST possible venue for their family reunion - RELAX!
Memories that last a lifetime will be made by everyone and they have you to thank for bringing all of them together!
Give me a call and I'll do all we can to make your family reunion as smooth and painless as possible!Feel free to contact me for more information about hosting a family reunion at Four Seasons Lodge.

7 North Conway, NH Restaurants for the Foodie in You! (for real)
9/26/2020
Even The Fussiest of Foodies Will LOVE These North Conway Restaurants
Calling all foodies to North Conway Restaurants!
Who would think that a foodie would find wonderful and interesting food in North Conway, NH... well, you will.
North Conway, NH has restaurants in all shapes and sizes including; family restaurants, romantic hideaway restaurants, Italian, American, steak houses, and finally, Ledges Restaurants - my personal fav.
Let's be real, one of the most enjoyable things that we get to experience in life is food.  If you don't enjoy food, are you even human?  It may be a luxury to some but it is one of the most satisfying activities we partake on a regular basis.  (I partake if someone else cooks!)
The best part about the North Conway restaurants I'm suggesting is they are ALL take food allergies very seriously!
Every one of them will take the time to ensure the oil used to fry your French fries has no soy in it or the salad of your choice has no nuts.
Local Picks of the 7 Best North Conway Restaurants!
Stonehurst Manor Wild Rose Restaurant & Martini Lounge
Ledges Restaurant at the White Mountain Hotel and Resort
The Flatbread Company
Frontside Grind - North Conway Restaurant and Coffee House
Stairway Cafe - North Conway, NH Restaurant
Snowvillage Inn - A Valley Original
McGrath's Tavern - A Valley Original
Make sure you discuss any food allergies even before you peruse the menu. Most times your server will clue you in to what foods can be altered and what cannot.
North Conway, NH is not just for people who want to camp out in the woods
cooking hot dogs , beans and bear meat over a fire (although you absolutely can and should do something like that, at lease for the experience).  North Conway, New Hampshire is a great place to do our favorite thing - EAT!
Now, obviously we still have chain restaurants (yuck!!) and "regular" dining spots but you can to those anytime!  North Conway has restaurants that will surprise and reward you for seeking them out.
Here's where I'm going to beg you to steer clear of chain restaurants!  You're on vacation for Pete's sake, be brave and eat local!  In fact, keep your eye out for the
Valley Original
flag hanging proudly outside the North Conway restaurants that belong to that prestigious organization!
Whether you're into eating your food or taking pictures of it, this list if for you!  These are my top restaurant picks in North Conway for the "foodie".
1. Stonehurst Manor Wild Rose Restaurant and Martini Lounge
The Stonehurst Manor
is a well know restaurant in North Conway. It's a gorgeous, period building that brings the 19th century up to present day.  Their dining area, the Wild Rose Restaurant, has delicious and beautiful homemade wood-fired bread, pizza, and various genres of great food.
If great atmosphere is important to you, you've picked the perfect place! I would classify this North Conway restaurant as romantic or a perfect place to get a great steak meal.
There are two separate dining areas to choose from.  The upper level only has a few tables and is quieter than the terrace but there are no windows and the door to the kitchen is in this room.  It makes for lots of traffic back and forth.  The porch area is bit noisier but there is a bank of windows all around and has a Victorian porch atmosphere.
It's a great spot for diving into the New England seafood scene that we New Englanders take such pride in.
There are many seafood creations on the menu to pick from.  Indulge, you're on vacation!
If seafood isn't your thing, there's also a variety of dishes from steak to pasta.
Wild Rose Restaurant also offers gluten-free, vegetarian, and dairy free options for those with dietary restrictions.  I can say with first-hand experience, the kitchen staff and wait staff are really interested and in tune with folks' allergies and sensitivities.
After dinner, head to the Martini bar were they have a vast list of martini's, obviously, alongside some other classic cocktails like Manhattans to more abstract drinks like a Pisco Sour, Asian Pear Mojito, and an Electric Cucumber Colada.
I won't lie, I love a gin Martini extra dirty with olives but that Asian Pear Mojito is amazing.  They also have a full bar with brews, wines, cognac, scotch and the like.
Go have your adult drink after your delicious dinner...  or before... or with...  whatever, I'm not here to tell you how to eat.  I'm hoping you'll strike out and try something new on your North Conway, NH vacation!
2. Ledges Restaurant at the White Mountain Hotel and Resort
If you like food with a view, this this is the place for you (the rhyme was unintentional but it sure is catchy)! North Conway is full of gorgeous views but I must say, this is my top pick from the inside of a North Conway restaurant.
I would suggest Ledges Restaurant for a romantic meal and it has delicious American cuisine.
The White Mountain Hotel and Resort is only a few minute's drive from Four Seasons Lodge and has a wonderful dinner and pub menu and the food is delicious!
Ledges Restaurant focuses on serving the freshest ingredients, providing the finest service, and specializing in New England cuisine (did somebody say... lobster?).  They have been awarded the "Award of Excellence" from Wine Spectator every year since 1995, due to their extensive wine list.
Join them for their Friday Night Seafood Fest where you can have anything from poached salmon to gulf shrimp cocktail encompassed in a 4-Course meal or you can attend their award winning Sunday brunch where you can enjoy their Belgian Waffles, eggs Benedict, roasts, or homemade corned beef hash.
Either way, you will be wow-d by their delicious food and gorgeous view of North Conway, Cranmore Mountain, and other local mountains... or you can eat cereal at home.  It's up to you.  HA!
Don't forget to stop in at Tullamore Tavern, the hotel's traditional style Irish pub.  They have a full bar with locally brewed beer, wine, cocktails and a menu of soups, burgers and nachos - because it's a pub.
Often times I choose the tavern for a sandwich, a good unfiltered wheat beer, and some great conversation with out of towners. It's a great pick of North Conway restaurants because it has the best of pub, fine dining, and a superb wine list.
3. The Flatbread Company
Despite the fact that the last two restaurant are in hotels, you don't have to go to a hotel to get great food. Flatbread Restaurant is definitely a family friendly North Conway, NH restaurant.
The Flatbread Company is a well known restaurant in North Conway for guess what - flatbread pizza!  It's cooked in a wood-fired clay oven that's right in the dining room!  Sit far away from the ovens in summer and you'll be better off!
They take pride in their all-natural and organic ingredients which is a must if you're truly a foodie.
They make their own dough daily and it's 100% organic.  If you're gluten free they have a locally made pizza crust that you'll love! It's made at my friend's bakery in Conway and is DELICIOUS!  (She ships her delicious creations as far away as Hawaii!)
There's a variety of salads and pizzas with all options ranging from gluten free to meat lovers (chemical-free meat that is), glulten-free meat lovers, and even vegan pizzas (or gluten-free vegan pizza).  All the choices are delicious and affordable.
Flatbread also provides free refills of fountain soda and coffee, and the atmosphere of the restaurant is very organic and woodsy.  Mostly you sit at a table, the occasional couch, or outside.
And for those of you that are homebodies and hate talking on the phone-they have online ordering!
4. Frontside Grind - North Conway Restaurant and Coffehouse
Frontside Grind is an artisan coffee shop right in the center of North Conway Village.  Even on vacation, we all know it's hard to kick that caffeine addiction we all have. (Hey, it's 2020 don't lie, we all have it to some degree - coffee, frappucino's, hot chocolate, whatever.)
Frontside Grind has been in business for the past 20 years and is still doing what it does best - provide a relaxing space for folks to enjoy a tasty drink or a carefully crafted sandwiches, soups, and other tasty treats.
Their large glass storefront fills the space with sunlight, their upstairs seating is very relaxed, back room area, and a peaceful patio in the warmer months, overlooking the mountains.
You'll find delicious coffee, teas, pastries, bagels, sandwiches and soups for a quick afternoon bite.  Frontside is definitely a great place to get a hot drink on a cold New England day or a cold drink on a hot New England day!
5. Stairway Cafe - North Conway Restaurant
Stairway Cafe is an all day breakfast and lunch North Conway restaurant because dinner is for squares!
They have a really interesting breakfast menu with your typical pancakes, eggs, omelets, and French toast makings but check out their wild game sausage breakfast which includes buffalo, venison, wild boar, elk or duck sausage and your have yourself a unique New England meal.
Like most original restaurants in North Conway, they try to use local New England produce for every plate to ensure you the the best quality ingredients for your meal.  And, speaking of local, they have a Fresh Maine Lobster Benedict that couldn't be more worth it!
For lunch, you can enjoy anything from salads to burgers to lobstah rolls, because this is New England.
Go check them out and get your fill of the best two meals of the day!
6. Snowvillage Inn - A Valley Original
Snowvillage Inn - North Conway Restaurant
Going a little
off the beaten path
in North Conway can lead to some beautiful places and great restaurants... or you could be lost, but hopefully not.  Either way, there is beauty to be found in all corners of the White Mountains!  If you head off the beaten path, you may wind up at Snowvillage Inn!
I can say this with experience, it's a beautiful spot to have a gathering and dinner!  I got married there!  The owners are wonderful, the setting is gorgeous and the food is out of this world!
I love everything on the menu and would say that if you're looking for an inventive Italian restaurant in North Conway, pick Snowvillage Inn!
The Snowvillage Inn is home to Max's Restaurant and Pub.  It's a perfect spot to have a fine meal in a relaxing and upscale atmosphere.  Max's Restaurant is part of the
Valley Originals
in the North Conway area.  Valley Originals are locally owned and operated plus they are a socially aware and involve group of folks!
Max's has 2 spots you can enjoy dinner and a porch for relaxing and to sip a drink or two!
There is the main dining room plus a cozier fireplace room with a view.  My favorite is to go and have a drink at sunset on the porch and then dine in the fireplace room!  The view from the porch is outstanding!  It's a gorgeous view of Mt Washington and the Presidential Range - it's a beautiful sight to behold.
They have a wonderful menu that includes fried brussel sprouts (UGH my favorite), duck, oysters, and crab cakes and that's just the appetizers.
Snowvillage Inn has a catch of the , and entree called Wild Side which can be anything from beef to boar or antelope to venison!  They also have duck, steak, lamb, gnocchi and some
gluten-free options
.
Don't forget to leave room for dessert because they serve chocolate tort, citrus layer cake, New York style cheesecake, and most importantly, salted caramel creme brulee.
It's truly a great spot for enjoying a fine meal, taking pictures of your fine meal, and enjoying a beautiful view with a glass of fine wine (or if you're me, a delicious unfiltered wheat beer) in your hand.
7. McGrath's Tavern - A Valley Original
Last but certainly not least, we come back into North Conway for an American and Irish Pub.
McGrath's lunch menu has salad and sandwish options that pair wonderfully with an afternoon drink and their dinner menu expands to some delectable entrees that will make you feel right at home.
They have your typical, but deliciously made pub food including "Clam Chowdah", because this is New England, French onion soup, nachos, potato skins, Irish Nachos, calamri, wings and scallops.
For the foodie, they also have filet mignon, steak tips, chicken, salads, pasta burgers, Guinness stew and or course, Shepard's Pie.
This is a great place to stop in for a drink and appetizers or to go all our and enjoy a full meal.  Either way, you have a variety of choices and there are no wrong answers!
That concludes our Foodie List of original and authentic restaurants in North Conway, NH.  Please join us and feel right at home - McGrath's is a family run business and eating there, you'll quickly become part of the family!

Awesome Kid-Friendly Ski Mountains in North Conway, NH
Tumblr media
Kid Friendly Ski Resorts in North Conway, NH
East coast skiers are a tough bunch - even the kids!  I hear all my west coast friends serenading “powder days” and even the occasional comment that they don’t ski unless there’s at least a foot of powder!
No matter what the North Conway weather is, you will see the chair lifts packed with us die-hards making our way to the top for just “one more run”!
Freezing temperatures, blowing snow or icy conditions will still bring out most everyone for a great day on the hill!
BUT...  if my kids were going to ski on sub-perfect snow condition days, I'd want to make sure they would be safe.  Skiing lessons are a great value when you think about the risks associated with your child making their way down a mountain without the knowledge of how to do so safely!
Kid Friendly Skiing in North Conway, NH
I have lived and skied in in North Conway, NH for most of my life.  When I started skiing here I was a beginner skier and with lots of great lessons and help from talented instructors I progressed in my skills enough that I became an instructor with the Eastern Slopes Ski Club (ESSC)  Homeschool Ski Program!
During my journey I skied and took lessons at every mountain within 30 minutes of North Conway including; Cranmore Mountain, Attitash Mountain, King Pine, Black Mountain, Wildcat, Bretton Woods and even a private lesson at Tuckerman Ravine..
Although they all have their strong points I always refer my guests at Four Seasons Lodge to my favorite three kid friendly ski resorts: Click here

Eye-Popping Fall Foliage in North Conway, NH
Eye Popping Fall Foliage in North Conway, NH
9/27/2019
North Conway, NH during Fall FoliageNorth Conway, NH has the BEST Fall Foliage in the Country!
Where is the BEST fall foliage in the country?  North Conway, NH of course!
OK, that's my not so humble opinion but, North Conway, NH DOES have amazing fall foliage.  The fall foliage photos in the picture above were all taken in North Conway, NH by me (except the aerial train photo) in 2018.
I am a fall foliage junkie and am the lucky cowgirl that lives in North Conway, NH. I love to go horseback riding on the snowmobile trails to get photos that folks normally don't get to see.
The Kancamagus Highway,
Mt Washington Hotel
, and the
White Mountain Trail
are highlights of any fall foliage tour to North Conway, NH. Every year, I host groups of guests at Four Seasons Lodge that come to North Conway, NH to enjoy the foliage and all three photo op spots are minutes from the lodge.
There are spots to view fall foliage that you can get 360 degree views within a few minute's drive of Four Seasons Lodge in North Conway, NH or you can make a day of it and enjoy driving the "White Mountain Trail".
Fall Foliage along the Kancamagus Highway
The Kancamagus Highway (The Kanc) At It's Best - Fall Foliage
As a local, I'd advise anyone that wants to do some leaf peeping of fall foliage to add the Kancamagus Highway to your list of not-to-be-missed spots! Unless you like enjoying the
fall foliage
shoulder to shoulder with hoards of tourists, I recommend planning your foliage tour early or late in the day.
I have no idea how many folks converge on
North Conway, NH
during fall foliage but it's a LOT! I love to take pictures and the best time for photos is either early or late in the day which puts you behind the lens when there is the least amount of competition for snapping your photos from the perfect spot.
If you drive like me (the speed limit), the journey from Conway to Lincoln along Rt 112 (the Kancamagus Highway) will take you about an hour if you don't stop. You will pass some great photo op fall foliage stops and short hikes will take you to many more gorgeous spots.
The drive is 34.5 miles of foliage gorgeousness and take it from me, use a rest room at either end or you'll be sorry. Businesses have not pushed their way into the Kancamagus Highway (thank goodness) so you won't assaulted with restaurants, gas stations, gift shops, bars, or big box stores.  Yipeeee!
What you will have at your disposal is scenic vistas for fall foliage viewing, benches to rest your weary legs, and well-worn hiking paths leading you to stunning vistas of fall foliage.
As it should be, the Kancamagus Highway has been designated as an American Scenic Byway. I've traveled all over this country and I have to say, it's in my top 5 scenic spots I've been seen.
The Kancamagus Highway cuts through the
White Mountain National Forest
and provides you with breathtaking views of the White Mountains, Sabbady Falls, Lower Falls, Rocky Gorge and the Swift River.
You won't get a nose-bleed on this fall foliage trip because you'll only reach an elevation of 3,000 feet on the Kancamagus Pass near Lincoln, which is the highest point.
Even if it's raining, you will have a fantastic drive along the Kancamagus. Driving through mountain passes will sometimes reward you with peeks of sunlight to frame the perfect picture and the rain will bring out the smell of pine and woodland scents.
Before you read on, I'd like to educate you on how to spell and say "The Kancamagus Highway".   I've seen is spelled Kangamagus, Kangumangus, and Kancamangus and I've heard is pronounced a zillion different ways. Here's the skinny - it's Kancamagus Highway and it's pronounced "Kank-ah-mah-gus".
There. Now you know.
Mt Washington Hotel - White Mountain TrailMt Washington Hotel - The Grande Dame of Fall Foliage
Mt Washington Hotel is the site of some of the most beautiful fall foliage pictures taken in NH! We've all seen them in magazines and on TV but have you seen the foliage at Mt Washington Hotel in person?
If you follow the White Mountain Trail, you'll be tooling right past the Mt Washington Hotel. There are a few great photo op spots within a mile; get a pic of the small chapel along the road (if it's open, go in, it's beautiful), there are two angles that make wonderful photos of the Mt Washington Hotel (you can see the Cog Railway if you look closely), and lastly, look to the left and get a great photo of Bretton Woods Ski Area.
The Mt Washington Hotel was finished in 1902 and cost almost 51 million dollars to construct.
Joseph Stickney
built the Mount Washington Hotel with the help of 250 Italian artisans and must have thought he was a bit off-center because at one point he said, "Look at me, gentlemen ... for I am the poor fool who built all this!"
Within a year of completing the Mt Washington Hotel, Joseph Stickney was dead.
His wife Carolyn summered at the hotel for the next decade and was known to be eccentric.
Urban legends of the White Mountains
has it that she haunts the hotel to this day.
North Conway, NH during Fall FoliageEpic Fall Foliage Views on the White Mountain Trail
Everyone knows about the White Mountains but not many folks know about the "
White Mountain Trail
".
The White Mountain Trail is about 140 miles long, has several variations, passes through several scenic byways, and has boundless scenic vistas!
My favorite part of the White Mt Trail is the views. No matter which variation of the drive you take, you'll pass Mt Washington, Mt Washington Hotel, waterfalls, pass over the Appalachian Trail, 3 notches, 7 historic
covered bridges
,
waterfalls
and cascades, over 30 scenic overlooks and historic and restored buildings.Prepare to be confused - there are several variations of the Wt Mountain Trail. Take the path that interests you most and just have fun!
Start out in Conway, NH and turn onto Rt. 112 (Kancamagus Highway) which is 34 1/2 miles long, passes through the White Mountains National Forest, and some of the most gorgeous views you'll ever see.
The Kanc (as the locals call the Kancamagus Highway) dumps you into Lincoln, NH where you can head north (after checking out
Clarks Trading Post
) and head to
Franconia Notch State Park
.
Clarks Trading PostOnce you're in Lincoln, NH, you have options:
continue to Rt 3 and Twin Mountain
or continute on the Kanc through Kinsman Notch to Rt. 302 and Bath, Lisbon, Littleton, Bethlehem, Twin Mountain, and Bretton Woods (the Mt Washington Hotel is across the highway from Bretton Woods ski area)
Rt 302 continues through Crawford Notch. Have your cameras ready especially during fall foliage.
You'll end up in Bartlett where you can either drive down Bear Notch Road and back to the Kanc or join up with Rt 16 and follow it back to Conway, NH
If you choose Rt 16 in Glen, you will pass through Pinkham Notch, have the choice to stop at the Mt Washington Auto Road, and go to Gorham to check out the North Woods Ride.
Fall Foliage in North Conway, NHWhite Mountains Scenic Drives and Byways
The Kancamagus Highway (the Kanc) - Also known as Route 112, the Kanc runs from Conway, NH to Lincoln, NH, is a gorgeous part of the White Mountain Trail, passes through the White Mountain National Forest, is steeped in history and takes part in forest ecology projects at the Russell Colbath Historic Site.
Presidential Range Tour - Starting at Rt 116, it travels from Littleton (don't miss Chutters!) to Whitefield, Rt 3, Rt 2 E to Gorham, Rt 16 S to Glen, Rt 302 W to Littleton and passes by 4 NH state parks, scenic vistas, and historic and pretty villages and towns.
River Heritage Tour - Starting in North Woodstock at Rt 3, travel to Rt 175 and Warren and Piermont, Rt 10, Rt 135, and finishing up with Rt 112 to North Woodstock. You'll see some amazing views, rivers to play in, photographic farms and architecture.
White Mountain Trail - The White Mountains Trail is a circular loop that can start at the Kanc and heads counter clockwise to Rt 16 N to Rt 302 W, Rt 3 S to I-93 and the Franconia Notch Highway with views of Mt Washington, Mt Washington Hotel, mountains, scenic vistas, and passes over the historic Appalachian Trail.

How an Amazing Vacation Will Boost Your Productivity at Work
7/18/2019
A Fantastic Vacation = Increased Productivity at Work!
Did you know that a healthy vacation when you plan active and relaxing activities will result in increased creativity, experiencing new activities, reduce stress, and recharge your internal batteries.
I did a lot of research for this blog and the word that kept popping up was creativity. Most research
articles
report that time away from work boosts creativity which leads to increased productivity at work.
It all makes sense. If you don't take a break from the task or project you are working on to problem solve, your brain gets no break from the path it's on.
If you change up things and take a vacation with your family or friends, you'll boost your creativity. When you are exposed to new and different things or maybe try something that's out of your wheelhouse will also boost your creativity. Vacations are a great time to do just that - most people try a new activity or explore a new place on vacation. A creativity win!
Psychology Today Has a Lot To Say About Vacations
Elizabeth Padillo Olesen starts her poem about work like this:
Work in the morning
Work at noon
Work in the afternoon
and work in the night.
Does that sound like you? Well, you're in good company because according to
Psychology Today
:
Americans have been taking less and less vacation time in the past 15 years and we have fewer vacation days that any other country.
55% of Americans did not use all their vacation days in 2015
41% check into work while on vacation
84% of executives in this country have cancelled vacations to work.
Most Americans pride themselves in working hard and being dedicated to their job but research has proven that employees will work harder, have better health, enthusiasm, and perform better at their jobs if they take time off.
Why is that?
According to
Psychology Today
, time spent enjoying leisure activities boosts our satisfaction with life and our marriages, increase good health, and result in us working harder.
How could it not?  Vacations should be exactly what you envision - unplugging from social media, TV, work and pleasure emails, and just enjoying activities solo or with friends or family that bring you joy.
Taking a few days off and only getting up from the couch to eat and go potty will not give you the benefits you're looking for. Your couch should not be your vacation destination.
You need to get up and go and do something you love.  The break from work will help you to return with a new and enthusiastic point of view.If you find you are unable to detach from work, you'll end up with
burnout
that impacts
productivity
.
Economically, you'd think businesses would encourage folks to use all their vacation time because it's estimated to cost $224 billion per year to pay folks for unused vacation time!
Raise your hand if you've ever sold back vacation time to your employer. At the same time, commit to yourself never to do that again.Social Media is STRESSFUL
A German
study
reports that social media has had a huge impact on our leisure time. "Leisure is becoming more and more stressful," the study reports. Folks feel pressure to document their vacation on social media and feel the need to stay connected with their friends and coworkers while they are supposed to be recharging their batteries. What Do Saco River Tubing and Four Seasons Lodge Have In Common?
I work in the vacation industry, I have owned
Four Seasons Lodge
, a vacation rental in North Conway, NH for 27 years.
As you might imagine, I have seen first hand the positive and enthusiastic energy my guests exude both during and after their amazing vacation!
We host up to 20 guest, family and friend groups. Most folks pre-plan an activity they have never experienced before like; Saco River tubing, driving the Mt Washington Auto Road, North Conway skiing, and other outdoor things to do in North Conway, NH.
A plus is that cell phone service is spotty at best and Internet service is sloowwwww so our city-folk guests get frustrated and give up on posting to Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. That all adds up to a big WIN for relaxing, unplugging, enjoying, resulting in increased productivity at work and satisfaction in life.
Four Seasons Lodge - North Conway LodgeVacations Help You - Stress Hurts You!According to Dr. Susan Krauss Whitbourne, "
When you're stressed out and tired
, you are more likely to become ill, your arteries take a beating, and you're more likely to have an accident. Your sleep will suffer, you won't digest your food as well, and even the genetic material in the cells of your body may start to become altered in a bad way."
Did you pay attention to that list?
become ill
arteries take a beating
have an accident
sleep will suffer
won't digest food as well
genetic material altered in your body
plus, poor memory
YIKES!
I bet you don't need to hear any more - I know I don't! Start planning an amazing vacation!
If you need any information about planning a vacation in North Conway, NH or a camping trip anywhere, give me a shout. I'm both a glamper (at Four Seasons Lodge) and a camper/RV'er!

When You Have Extra Cash - Choose a Vacation, Not Toys
The other day, a friend asked me what my earliest memory was.
Hmmm... I had to give it some thought. Was it a toy I got for Christmas? The time we had a picnic at the beach? When Mom and I made an angel food cake with colored sprinkles? Or the day I got to row a rowboat all by myself?
It was most certainly the day my Dad let me row the rowboat all by myself.  I was about 5 years old and I was so happy and proud.
I started reminiscing about my childhood and all the fun, funny, happy, and memorable times I could remember were all "events" and not "things".
My work gig is that I own Four Seasons Lodge in North Conway, NH and realizing that my fondest memories growing up were almost exclusively time spent with family or friends playing, vacationing, and celebrating was an epiphany for me.
I started to wonder if I was onto something - turns out I was.1. What Makes Kids Happier? Vacations With Loved Ones or Toys?
Have you ever watched a house-full of kids opening presents on Christmas morning? In most households, it's bedlam.
Thousands of dollars of sought after toys and games are carefully wrapped and placed under the tree by "Santa".
It took many hours of shopping, buying, wrapping, working for the money to buy the presents, and about 45 minutes to find yourself engulfed in a sea of wrapping paper with several kids playing with their one favorite toy. You know what happens to the other multitude of toys that are NOT their favorites. It boggles my mind.
Every year at Four Seasons Lodge, I get a worried phone call from a grandmother somewhere in New England. They fret and stammer to me on the phone that they have NO idea what to buy their kids for birthdays and holidays - never-mind their grandkids.
Grandma drones on for a while longer about the cost of toys and that she wants to get them the perfect toy but know their parents will get them what's #1 on their list.
Finally, she gets down to business. She wants to book my lodge for a vacation but she frets that the grandkids won't be excited about a vacation.
Fast-forward to the first day of the family vacation. The younger set is very excited about going away, the tweens are pouting about leaving their friends, and the teenagers are miserable and tweeting/texting/Facebooking their friends about this God-forsaken place called North Conway.
Day Two of Vacation: Kids of all ages meet me at the door to tell how their Dad tried a rope swing when they were Saco River tubing or they all caught frogs when they went on a hike, or they went on the Ferris wheel alone for the first time!
Although my sample size is tiny, I have been welcoming guests for almost 28 years and I have yet to see kids that are not enjoying their vacation time with their family!
I'm in good company with my thinking that vacations are better than toys.
Britain's bestselling psychological author, Oliver James, writes about the relationships between children and their parents. He has noted that around
one in five gifts we give our children are not actually wanted or valued
.
Parents, friends, and relatives still continue the cycle of buying too much which results in bins, shelves, and closets getting filled with unused and unloved toys.
2. Will Vacations Really Make My Kid Smarter?
Family Time at Story Land
The
US Department of Education
says YES!
They did a study of the effects of vacation on the academic achievement of children from Kindergarten to 5th grade. They paid specific attention to the areas of reading, math, and general knowledge.
The results of that study showed that children that vacationed scored higher on academic achievement tests and they get a bonus boost in achievement if the trips were educational in nature.
At a glance:
Children who traveled with their families scored higher on academic achievement assessment tests than those who did not travel.
The number of days spent on family trips positively affected academic achievement.
Children who spent time at museums, historical sites, state parks, and even the zoo and beach had significantly higher academic achievement scores than those who did not.
According to Dr William Norman, Associate Professor in Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management at Clemson University in South Carolina, family travel is a valuable part of a child's education that "contributes to cognitive growth and stimulates a child's sense of wonderment. Providing kids with the experience of travel broadens their horizons and opens up their minds to learning."
I love the way this expert thinks! James Oliver goes on to say, "On the other hand, family holidays are definitely valued by children, both in the moment and for long afterward in their memory. So if you're going to spend money on something, it's pretty clear which option makes more sense." He also states that most adults and children would prefer experiences over material things. -- I agree.Have you ever heard, "Can you play with me?" I know I have!
Even though kids have every toy and game they ask for, they insist they are bored. Parents plan multiple playdates, activities, and lessons to keep kids active and quiet but ultimately, it's one on one face time they are craving.
Give in. Plan some together time, make memories, share experiences, and you'll have a happier and more intelligent kid to boot!3. Toys Are Disposable - Memories Last Forever
Have you ever gone to a yard sale?
Going to yard sales is a summertime sport for me. I love vintage odds and ends and usually can find a few keepers every summer.
What is very noticeable at most yard sales is the overwhelming amount of toys compared to other items. Many times games, books, and stuffed animals have not even been opened or have the tags still on them.
It's sad that most families fall into the trap that kids need a popular toy that is on every second commercial. The reality is that toys, even if your children love certain ones, are only a part of their lives for a short time.
Family vacations and the memories that will definitely be made, will be a part of their lives forever. It would be awesome if families made vacations their priority instead of today's version of the Cabbage Patch Doll.4. Family Vacations Get Kids Off Technology
Most kids left to their own devices these days, will choose technology over being outdoors.
Technology certainly has its' place in their lives but time spent outdoors is very important for children.
According to
Harvard Medical School
, children need to be out in the sunshine to make Vitamin D, they'll get more exercise outside, it boosts executive function, it enhances social skills, and will give them an appreciation of nature and the environment.
5. Experiences, Not Toys Will Make Them More Well Rounded!
OK, now it's time to plan a vacation. After reading that vacations can make your kids smarter, it will be tempting to cram education down their throats. Remember that everything does not need to have a purpose.
Kids live very structured lives with most parents working full-time plus. Imagine how awesome it would be to go on vacation and sleep in late snuggling with a loved one with no schedule for the day.
You're getting a break from work, let you kids have a break from a hard and fast schedule. Ask them what they'd like to do for the day. Just realize that even if you go for a walk or have a pillow fight, they will be learning more than you realize.
They might be learning from you, about you, and maybe even with you.
I remember one trip I took with my 8-year-old son and his Dad plus, my parents. We were sitting around in the RV one night and my son started asking my parents all sorts of questions.
Before I knew it, we had discussed WWII, the Great Depression, my Dad picking weeks from rows of carrots when he was 8 years old on a huge farm, my Mom growing up sleeping in a 3/4 (that's SMALL!) size bed with her Mom and sister, and how my folks remembered signs in windows in town saying, "No Irish Allowed".
Yep, my vote goes to experiences, not toys.
If you're a facts and figures person, it's said that the average household spends $700 per child on toys a year.
I don't know about you, but I could plan a few awesome camping experiences for way less than that!  Every state has State Parks, National Parks are all over the place and out west there are Grasslands and BLM lands with very low fees for camping.
Whatever kind of vacation would make you smile, the most important thing is to take everyone into consideration. Just because you get giddy over an art museum doesn't mean that your 8 year old will agree.
I mention
camping
because it's typically the most cost-effective vacation you can take. The #1 reason folks say they don't take many vacations is cost. Most kids would be just as happy toasting marshmallows over a campfire as taking a Caribbean cruise - what they will pay attention to and remember is all the laughing, smiling, and memories they made with you.
Happy trails wherever your travel takes you.

Saco River Tubing, Sun, and FUN!
Have you started planning your summer vacation? I have many suggestions of fun things to do in North Conway, NH but Saco River tubing tops this list!
Many things that folks like to do in North Conway require you to be physically fit.  Not everyone is buff enough to climb a mountain or jog a few miles.  I dare to say that even the couchiest of couch potatoes can climb into a canoe or kayak and float down a lazy, perfectly clear, refreshing river and go Saco River Tubing! Back in my teens we used to head to North Conway, NH to go tubing on the Saco River.  Those were the days before you could go to a big box store and purchase a tube for a few bucks.
We had the pleasure and pain of watching my Dad procuring several tractor-trailer tire tubes, but we had to patch the holes, fill them up with air, tie them onto the roof of our car with rope, and head north for a day of Saco River tubing.
For those that do not know the horrors of using used tractor-trailer tire tubes, let me enlighten you. Trust me, I feel compelled to warn you!
First, they are heavy.  I was young and weak and had to tote my tube from the car to the river which was a huge deal.
Second, they were filthy.  I remember baby-sitting for weeks to buy a new, beautiful bathing suit to wear on our weekend vacation.  Everyone laughed at me all weekend because my butt was solid black.  You see, back then I was not a lay down and float kinda gal.  I used to sit on it like a swing so I looked like I was sitting on a donut.  I never wore that bathing suit again but I still remember feeling like I was all that and a bag of chips until cloth met rubber.
Third, the fill stem was child torture.  Anyone over 55 knows the pain and probably has a scar or two from them slicing their arm or leg on one of those bad boys.
I still own a tire tube or two but I have not used them in years.  Head down to the local store and buy one or rent one from the great companies in town that will drop you off with your rented tube, kayak or canoe and then cart your soggy, dripping self back to your car at day's end.
Now-a-days, we have all sorts of options when it comes to enjoying a day in the water.  Forget about going to a water park and floating down one of their chlorine filled "lazy rivers". Come tubing on the Saco River in North Conway, New Hampshire and enjoy the real thing!
The Saco River is a 136 mile river that begins flowing up in the Crawford Notch, New Hampshire and it heads straight through New Hampshire to Western Maine before emptying into the Atlantic Ocean.
It is a beautiful river that is one of the largest attractions in North Conway! Saco River tubing is a dream come true on a hot summer day, but don't forget to check out my other blog called
8 Perfect Summer Days in North Conway, NH
. Saco River tubing is great fun but I know from experience, there's a lot more to do and see while tubing down the river.  Keep your eye out for the horses of Four Seasons Lodge!  We often go to the river to cool off!
You'll also see lots of wildlife, meet some new friends and see gorgeous scenery too!
Water of the Saco River
The Saco River is a beautiful river that has very quiet spots, mostly clear water, small sets of rapids and sandbars. There are a few rough spots and falls along the river so it's good to study where you're going before just jumping in!
It's a great place to kayak, canoe, tube, or even swim while current carries you gracefully to the east.
The water is typically a little cold but it feels great on a hot day, and the river is a little wide which doesn't allow for much shade so bring a hat and lots of strong sunscreen so by hour five you're not cooked straight through to your bone!
One of the best parts of the Saco River is all of the sandy spots that allow you to stop and picnic/enjoy the beach. Not to mention the fresh New England air and green trees provide ample opportunities for family photos. Saco River Tubing Equipment
Tubing under a Covered Bridge!
One of the best options for renting equipment (if you don't have your own), is at
Saco Canoe Rental Company right off the White Mountain Highway in Conway, New Hampshire. It's only a seven minute drive from the Four Seasons Lodge!
They offer a 1.5 mile float which takes 1-3 hours and is great for all ages!
If you want a longer day and to hit some baby rapids take their 3 mile Redstone Rapids trip and enjoy a little more excitement on your float. This one is great for kids 8 and up and will take 3-5 hours so plan on getting there a little bit on the early side.
They also offer a 6 mile trip that provides sandy beach areas and rope swings along the river. This is a great option if you want to spend the entire day floating at your leisure!
You can also rent a tube for your cooler, paddleboards, canoes, and kayaks. Every landing location provides a shuttle back to your car so there is no walking or alternative transportation back up river!
If you want to head a little further up the river there is another great rental place called Saco Bound . Saco Bound's location is an 18 minute drive from the Four Season's Lodge and their launch sight is right near the New Hampshire/Maine state line.
They offer canoe, kayak, tubing, and white water rafting. They also offer a few different length trips depending on what you're looking for.
Their first trip is from their location to Weston's Bridge, which is a 3 mile trip on calm clear waters. This is a great options for first timers who are just looking to spend 1-2 hours on the water.
Their second trip is from their location to Pig's Farm which is a 6.4 mile excursion that provides plenty of beaches for picnicking and swimming. This is a great option for the entire family.
One other tubing option is go from Redstone to Saco Bound, where you park your car at Saco Bound and are shuttled to the launch site so you can just make your way peacefully back to your car.
The last option is for a full day on the water at a whopping 10.2 miles that ends at a beautiful private campground which is great for families and large groups.
They also offer overnight canoe/camping and every ride provides a shuttle ride to your car (or to your launch site if you're going from Redstone to Saco Bound)!
No matter where you launch from your are set up to have a relaxing day by doing one of the top things to do in North Conway!
No Excuses - Go Tubing on the Saco River!
So you think that tubing down the Saco River sounds boring? Think again! There are so many reasons why your excuses are lazy and futile.
First thing’s first: family time. A Saco River adventure is a family friendly thing to do ! It requires very little work for the people who want to relax, or a lot if your kids want to swim in the refreshing water or go to one of the many rope swings to jump off. Even if you kayak or canoe there are very rare occasions you need to paddle--except to steer.
Don’t forget the kids! You can always get a two-person kayak or a canoe so that your children can join and enjoy the beautiful day with you.
Number two is that you get to go outside. Breathe in the fresh air, enjoy some cold water on your feet and get some of that vitamin D we all need.
Typically on hot days you are busy trying to cool off. Spending the day tubing down a cold river is a great activity and it provides a free place to cool off whenever you need it—the water! Float to your hearts content in the hot sun (with a wide-brimmed hat and a lot of sunscreen of course. You must protect yourself!) and whenever you get too hot, just jump in the water. It will cool you right off!
Just make sure you google the weather in North Conway before you head out--a little rain is one thing but a thunderstorm is another! A little set of clouds wouldn't hurt either!
Last but not least tubing down a real river is not something you get to do everyday, unless you are a professional white water rafter, in which case you may be bored--but you need to relax too! It’s fun and different and will change up the hum-drum routine of day to day life (plus no Wifi and unless you have one of those super waterproof phones possibly no phone as well).
You get to enjoy the outdoors without distractions from work or the outside world. What beats that?
That’s right. Nothing. Take a break, you deserve one.

7 Awesome Things To Do in North Conway, NH
7 Awesome Things To Do in North Conway, NH
North Conway, NH - Not Just a Ski Town Anymore
Things To Do in North Conway, NHNorth Conway, NH got its' name on the map in the 1930's when "snow trains", operated by Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad started bringing rich city-folk to North Conway, NH to experience the new sensation called downhill skiing.
Every week, hundreds of tourists flocked to this quaint village to experience the thrill of rushing down a mountain on parallel boards strapped to their feet.
Skiing was new to America and North Conway quickly became known as the "birthplace of American skiing".
Growing up in North Conway, locals feel that some form of skiing is kind of in their DNA.  A local non-profit called, Eastern Slopes Ski Club does fundraising and recruits many volunteers to form a program that teaches and allows elementary school kids up to the 6th grade to learn and ski for free.
But don't think for one second that skiing is all that North Conway, NH has to offer.  In not particular order, here is my list of the top 7 things to do in North Conway that make our rural village famous!
North Conway Restaurants
Terrific North Conway Restaurants
North Conway Restaurants
- It does not matter if you drive through a fast food take-out every day or you're a finicky foodie, there are many restaurants in North Conway that will make you smile.  According to TripAdvisor, there are about 80 restaurants top to bottom in the Mt Washington Valley and North Conway.  Doesn't matter if you are gluten, soy or nut free (not suggesting that you're a nut!), vegetarian, or prefer your food to come from a paper bag delivered by a college kid, you'll be gastronomically satisfied!  :)
Saco River Tubing - North Conway, NHSaco River Tubing Like a Pro
- Sounds hokey, doesn't it?  Well, it's not!  It's a fun and low-cost experience not to be missed. It's definitely a family friendly thing to do in North Conway, NH.  Some of my friends plan a mini-vacation for 2 or 3 nights and float down our lazy river called Saco.
Have you ever tried swinging by a rope into a lake or river? Be sure to try it out here, but let go when you are furthest out from the riverbank.  I have seen so many kids swing out and then head back for land thinking they can just step off the rope - NOT!  I won't tell you what happens...
Have you ever seen birds flying full tilt into a hole in a vertical drop of a riverbank?  You will definitely see it happen here.  It's so unbelievable to watch.
Conway Scenic Railroad - The North Conway Railroad

North Conway Weather
- Yes, we are located about 40 miles from what is reported to be "the worst weather on Earth".  It's New England, so you know you can experience 3 seasons in one day.  When packing for your vacation, make sure you take warm weather clothes and extra layers so you don't freeze your bejangees (my Mom's favorite saying) during winter!
North Conway Outlets - Settlers Green

North Conway Outlets
- Bring your wallets and make sure there is some room on your credit card for a few (or more) purchases.  You'll need it!
Settlers Green Outlet Mall keeps getting bigger and bigger.  Whatever is on your shopping list is sure to be found there.  The only thing there are not too many deals on is tools.  You can find just about anything else there.
White Mountain Attractions - Story LandStory Land - White Mountain AttractionsStory Land | A White Mt Attraction - I went to Story Land for the first time when I was in my mid-forties.  I was really impressed with the layout, cost, food, service, and the number of different kinds of ride to make kids of all ages smile.  I returned last year and I feel the say way.  It's a White Mountain Attraction that you are not going to have to mortgage the house to take the family.
Mt Washington Auto Road - Snow Coach
Who wouldn't want to drive up the road to the "worst weather on Earth"?  The ride is gorgeous, scary, long enough, well cared for, and exhilarating in winter.  You can take the Auto Road in summer and the Snow Coach in winter.  I love both!
