Datsun Go: Still Worth Driving
Datsun is an auto manufacturer with a history. Dating back to Japan’s earliest days of car building, it has evolved to become a manufacturer recognised for its durable, attractive and trustworthy vehicles. The Datsun Go embodies the spirit of modern Datsun – perfect for young risers chasing their dreams.
The Story of Nissan Datsun Go South Africa
Nissan relaunched the Datsun brand in 2013 after a number of years of being inactive. Models have been available in South Africa since 2014.
The Datsun Go was introduced as a low-cost competitor in the hatchback market. Despite being low-cost, the Datsun Go features everything a young riser could need and want in their first new car investment.
Datsun’s return didn’t start with deciding which models to launch, but with the people in mind. Young risers: ambitious young people that are ahead of the curve, waiting for that one opportunity that will rocket their careers and futures forward.
A young riser realises that mobility relates to both physical and social access to opportunities. They deserve a car brand of their own – a brand representative of their tenacity to succeed.
Datsun has made their triumphant return to South Africa and the world in order to become the proud badge of the risers.
The Badge of the Risers reflects both Datsun’s heritage and guiding principles. The centre portion of the new badge honours the spirit of old Datsun by retaining the essence of its original logo. Modern robustness and confidence to succeed in a new world are conveyed by the surrounding portion of the badge, featuring a hexagon inspired by shiny bolts.
Datsun’s new way is all about forging a mutually rewarding and enjoyable relationship with risers, beginning from the moment of purchase on through the ownership experience. At Datsun, it’s all about growing a locally built, relevant brand that draws inspiration from the company’s global technological understanding and proficiency in both styling and engineering.
The core values Datsun aims to be known for can be summarised as: dream, access and trust.
Datsun wishes to turn risers’ investment into a purchase they will never regret – to be a car brand that allows young risers to love the car they are able to afford. To be a manufacturer that makes dreams come true, no matter what a customer’s budget. Datsun wants to offer quality, modern cars at an affordable price.
One of a riser’s main concerns is accessing opportunities that will drive them towards their dreams. Datsun aims to ensure that everything is friendly, easy and inviting: from the buying experience to own, not just the affordable price.
Lastly, Datsun wishes to be seen as a trusted automotive brand that is able to deliver in terms of durability, quality and reliability, because of our global expertise, as well as leveraging from our roots.
Datsun Go Prices to Rave About
Datsun’s new range of cars is made for modern living. They offer great fuel economy, spacious interiors, bold designs and the latest technological innovations. Risers can cruise through the city streets in style. The latest model variants of the Datsun Go available to consumers in South Africa are:

Datsun Go Reviews – See for Yourself
Datsun has made great strides in going above and beyond to improve the Go since its initial launch back in 2013. Listening to customers and their concerns have allowed Datsun to engineer a car that ticks all the budget car boxes.
Datsun Go Interior Design Will Blow Your Mind
The new Datsun Go is designed to function for the way you really live. The best part? It’s so accessible! You get a lot of bang for your buck with the new Datsun Go.
Spacious Interior
The Datsun Go’s best-in-class cabin length allows for everyone coming along for the ride to stretch out and sit comfortably. Rear passengers will feel as though they are nestled in a cosy sedan, with more than ample knee room and a well-cushioned seat.
In the front, you’ll find that the Datsun Go offers great shoulder and headroom compared to many of its competitors. The lidded glove box, door pocket and passenger side storage provide you with ample space to store your personal effects. Bottle holders in the doors will ensure that you keep hydrated during your travels.
Quiet Cabin
Strategically placed insulation throughout the solidly built cabin allows you to enjoy conversation and music on your drives. Your time spent behind the wheel can now also become quality time.
Generous Boot Space
Coming in at 265 litres, the Datsun Go is able to accommodate your luggage for a weekend getaway or those of your friends flying in for a visit.
Sleek Interior Design
A clean, simple and modern look is very desirable nowadays. Datsun Go placed emphasis on thoughtful details that reflect quality during the design process.
A bird’s wing inspired the elegant, dipping line of the dashboard. A touch of silver accents throughout the cabin, the gear-lever conveniently positioned within easy reach of the steering wheel on the instrument panel and the cool and comfortable shape of the door handles all combine to make the Datsun Go something special.
It’s not just easy to drive – it’s also easy on the eyes.
Leather-Feel Grain Pattern
An added detail like this is what makes the Datsun Go feel a class above its peers. The dashboard and the interior are trimmed with a leather-feel, soft to the touch grain pattern. Datsun puts a lot of care into selecting materials that will give our cars an upmarket feel. The materials used are chosen with the customer’s experience in mind.
7” Touchscreen
The Datsun Go’s touchscreen features integrated Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth, enabling you to take control of your world.

Used Datsun Go And Go+: Great Entry-level Options
While more Indian car buyers are moving towards upper segments, the entry-level category remains crucial. A big chunk of the car sales comes from this particular segment which is catered by most of the major players in the country. One such player is Nissan which revived its legendary brand 'Datsun' to make a presence in the entry-level segment.
Datsun Go+
Discontinued in 1987, the brand re-started its journey in 2013 with an affordable model 'Go'. The Datsun GO for sale arrived in the Indian market in 2014, followed by its plus-sized version 'Go+' in 2015. However, neither of the products managed to make a good reputation in the Indian auto industry.
Making another attempt, the company has introduced first major update to these models, said to provide them with an upmarket feel. We went to Chennai, where both of these cars are manufactured, to drive them and tell you what they have got.
Does it look different?
As the previous generation, both the new models look alike from the front and back. However, the elongated side profile of the Go+ makes it look different from the Go.
A look at the new features would reveal that there are subtle changes in the front grille, headlamps and the bumpers. The front bumper also gets LED daytime running lights and these updates definitely make the cars a bit more appealing than their respective outgoing versions.
While the side profiles of the cars look almost similar to their respective outgoing versions, new alloy wheels provide a fresh look. The LED DRLs and 14-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels with a dual-tone finish, however, comes with the top-spec variant only.
The rear doesn't look that new despite the redesigned bumper and a chrome stripe. While the Go gets this stripe at the boot lid bottom, that of the Go+ has been placed a little higher.
How does it feel inside?
Stepping inside the new Go series is an entirely new experience. The company has fully revamped the interior and and it looks much better now.
The new dash incorporates a seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the top variants which supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The plastics used inside are not soft but of a decent quality. The instrument cluster has also been redesigned and it now gets a small multi-functional LCD display for trip and fuel efficiency related information.
Another big change with respect to the previous versions is the separate seats for the driver and the frontpassenger. Earlier, the models came with a bench type seat for the driver and the front passenger. Earlier, the models came with a bench type seat at the front. The seats are well cushioned and have proper thigh and bolster supports as well. The company hasn't changed the unconventional positioning of the gear lever which continues to take the place a bit higher, near the steering. While some may find it more comfortable, the rest will have to make a few adjustments to get used to it.
The rear seats are comfortable too and there is adequate legroom and headroom for the rear passengers as compared to the other cars in this particular price range.
The Go has one of the largest boots in its segment with a capacity of 265-litre (just lesser than the 300-litre boot of the Renault Kwid) which is pretty decent for a weekend family trip.
On the other hand, the Go+ gets a third seating row in its 5+2 seating configuration. Here Datsun clearly says that the third row is just to accommodate 2 kids, not adult passengers. The third-row can also be folded down to get 374-litre of luggage capacity.
What does it get under the hood?
The new Datsun Go and Go+ continues to take power from the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine which comes with a five-speed manual transmission. It is the same three-cylinder engine which is also used in Nissan Micra and you can even see Nissan's badging on the engine.
The motor has been tuned to deliver 68PS of power and 104Nm of torque. Refinement of the engine is impressive and it has a linear delivery pattern. It works well with the five-speed manual gearbox and the combination makes one of the most surprising powertrains in the entry-level segment. However, the shiftings of gears are a bit clumsy which can irritate in heavy traffic.
Why it can be a gamechanger?
The game-changing additions to the new Go and Go+ are the safety features like dual front airbags, anti-lock braking system with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist, and rear parking sensors. Datsun is providing all these features as standard right from the base variant which is impressive.
The previous generation of the Go was criticised a lot for the safety after getting zero-star rating by the global NCAP for adult occupants protection.
The previous generation of the car was tested without any of these safety features and remarked providing poor protection to the driver due to the hard contact with the steering wheel. NCAP also mentioned that both front passengers’ knees could impact with dangerous structures in the dashboard. The bodyshell was rated as unstable.
Now the noteworthy fact is airbags and redesigned dashboard can improve the ratings a bit by cancelling out these points. However, the bodyshell stability and structural strength will remain the same.
Why you can consider it in your options list?
The Datsun Go is definitely one of the most good looking cars from outside and inside in its price range. The safety features are segment-above and are standard in all the variants. As an entry-level option, it is a value for money package.

Datsun celebrates special milestone: Meet the special edition GO
Datsun South Africa is celebrating its first fifty months in the country with a special edition Datsun GO and a visit to its roots in Bothaville.
Des Fenner, General Manager for Datsun in SA, says: "It’s hard to believe that more than four years have passed since we re-entered South Africa with the affordable Datsun GO.
"Since then, we have expanded the range with the larger Datsun GO Plus and Datsun GO Plus Panel Van, with several additional models on the radar."
Special edition
To celebrate its success in SA, Datsun is launching the Datsun GO Special Version. The Special Version is based on the Lux specification level and in addition features a Bluetooth and USB-enabled audio-system, silver and blue decals on the bodywork and silver accents inside the cabin.
“Our market research shows that Datsun owners value their vehicles’ affordability and ease-of-servicing above all else.
Many owners gradually personalise their vehicles and it is specifically for them that we have created the Special Version,” Fenner continued.
The Datsun GO is SA’s reigning cost-champion. According to the annual Kinsey Report, which ranks vehicles by the cost of their service and repair parts, the Datsun GO is the most affordable vehicle to maintain, repair and run in the country.
Japanese nostalgia
A first edition of the Datsun GO will also be on display at the world-renowned Datsun and Nissan museum in Bothaville.
Here, car-collector Freek de Kock has built up a collection of rare and special Datsun and Nissan models that remains unrivalled outside of Nissan’s own vehicle museum in Japan, Zama Garage.
“We have over 200 models at our museum, of which many are in pristine condition, while others are in different stages of restoration. We look forward to welcoming fellow enthusiasts and Datsun fans, especially during this week’s NAMPO show outside of town,” says De Kock.
Among the many cars on display are perfectly restored versions of every Datsun and Nissan Skyline GT-R, from the first GT-R Hakosuka to the current R35 Nissan GT-R. The collection also includes several versions of the Datsun SSS Coupé, the Datsun 1200 Coupé and beautifully restored versions of the 240Z.
“While the Datsun brand returned to SA just over 50 months ago, our roots run deep in SA and for many, a visit to the Nissan and Datsun museum in Bothaville is the perfect way to rekindle the passion for the Datsun brand,” says Fenner.

New Datsun GO raises the bar
Designed to create mobility for middleclass and appeal to millennials.
When Datsun reemerged in South Africa in 2014 after more than three decades out of the local car game, it wasn’t all plain sailing for their comeback model, called Go.
It started with a very bad safety rap, which was the result of a crash test score of zero rating and later led to the introduction of a single airbag in the top model.
Although the car did remarkably well in terms of sales, with over 300 000 Go, Go+ and panel vans moved worldwide in four years, the safety cloud, as well as a very low spec set continued to follow the car like a shadow.
So during the launch of the new Datsun Go in Johannesburg, the onus was on Nissan to see how much they’d raised their game.
I’m happy to report, they’ve raised the bar on both the safety and spec fronts, unveiling a presentable little number.
And quite a pretty one, too.
The biggest improvement in terms of safety sees the addition of driver and passenger airbags and ABS across the entire range, while vehicle dynamic control will be introduced by next year.
The exterior sees redesigned front and rear bumpers, a D-cut honeycomb grille, LED daytime running lights, rear wiper with washer, 14-inch alloy wheels and reverse parking sensors.
Another key feature is FollowMe-home headlights that stay on after you exit the car to provide light as you walk to your door.
The timing can be set in intervals of 30 seconds to give you as much time as you might need.
Significant upgrades inside include a redesigned dashboard, individual seats replacing the bench, front and rear electric windows, electric-adjust mirrors and the handy addition of Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Don’t expect miracles as the 1.2-litre engine produces a humble 50kW of power and 104Nm of torque. It probably won’t win many street races and you do need to rev the engine quite high to get the best out of it, but it’s still a solid offering in its class.
I doubt you’ll get the claimed 5.2l/100km in peak traffic, but the small engine should still be fuel efficient.
It handles decently and the Go should be a reliable everyday runaround car.
The Go+ provides a nice alternative as a seven-seater and the panel van comes with obvious commercial benefits. All the current models come standard with a five-speed manual gearbox, with a CVT option in the pipeline for the next year.
Nissan has upped its appeal to first-time buyers looking for a better alternative to public transport.
And to state their case during the launch last Thursday, Nissan’s Mpumi set off from Maponya Mall in Soweto to Pretoria, using only pubic transport, at the same time as the convoy of media cars started its journey to the capital.
And it was point proven as the rest of the contingent was faster to the destination – and a lot less poorer – than the knackered Mpumi when she finally arrived.
According to Moeketsi Mapogo, Nissan South Africa’s product manager, the new Go is a “game changer”.
“It is the biggest car in the local A segment and it is even ready to compete now with the lower end of the B segment, taking all the additional features into consideration,” says Mapogo.
“Just take the reverse parking sensors, for example. It gives much-needed confidence for the first-time owner or driver.”
According to Nissan marketing director Kabelo Rabotho, the new Go does much more than just present first-time buyers with a cost-effective option.
“We’ve seen the emergence of a new middle-class in South Africa and our brand set out to create access to mobility. “But with millennials wanting more, we’ve addressed customers needs with this upgrade.
“And we’ll be expanding the brand over the next few years, making space for more cars in our line-up.”
But with all it’s added features the new Go does come at a price.
Starting at R144 500 for the entry-level mid-specced model, the Go has gone up by just about 10% from the previous model.
But by organising finance and insurance at 114 countrywide dealerships, the prospect of setting off in a Go is still a whole lot safer, and possibly also cheaper, than relying on public transport.
All models come standard with a three-year / 100 000km warranty and an optional service plan.

Datsun has used the SA Festival of Motoring as a platform to launch its latest budget offering, the GO+ MPV
It has been two years since Datsun made its comeback to the South African market with the budget-friendly (and popular) Datsun GO compact hatchback. Now, the GO+ has been introduced adding some versatility and roominess to the lineup.
The Datsun GO+ will be offered either as a 5+2 family MPV (7 seats in total) or as a panel van, named the GO+ Panel Van. Vincent Cobee, global head of Datsun was at Kyalami for the unwrapping and said, “The plus edition of the Datsun GO, will create its own unique sub-segment (within the upper A-segment/ lower B-segment), as a versatile multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) offering motorists exceptional value, fuel economy and maintenance at an attractive price. These have all been the hallmarks of Datsun since its re-entry into the country.”
The GO+ will continue to use the same 1.2-litre petrol unit as the standard GO. A total output of 50 kW and 104 Nm hardly seems much for a vehicle that's intended to carry 7 people with luggage, but we'll hopefully be able to test the GO+'s abilities for ourselves soon. Speaking of luggage, with the rear seats folded (5-seater mode) the GO+ is claimed to offer a very reasonable 347 litres of load space.
The major drawcard of this MPV is the price, Datsun. Compared to other 7-seater MPVs like the Toyota Avanza, Honda Mobilio and Suzuki Ertiga, it’s extremely keenly priced.
Other standard features available on the GO+ include:
A choice of five colours, including gold - a new option unique to the Datsun GO+
Driver’s side airbag
Air conditioner
Drive computer
All-new dark interior
Mobile docking station
