LETTERING STYLE CHALLENGE 2024
Day 31: Ampersand // Location: V&A Museum // Film: Red, White & Royal Blue (2023)
The final prompt this year was ampersand, and the Victoria & Albert Museum, also called the V&A, was a perfect candidate for it. (I think I deserve bonus points for choosing a movie with an ampersand in the title, too!)
For this lettering I wanted the V and the A to be structured and solid, and the ampersand to be a little gooey between them. This is a short scene in the film, but pivotal for the men solidifying their feelings for each other. I kind of think of it like the V and A are mirrors of each figure, and the & represents their emotions. Is that too much? It's been a long month 😂
I can't believe this is the final day of the challenge! This is my third year in a row completing it, and I'm giving myself a pat on the back for once again (somehow) managing to complete and post each piece on its assigned day. I've loved seeing everyone else's work each day too; it's given me so much inspiration and motivation for this month and beyond! Wrap-up post to come 🤍
For the Lettering Style Challenge this year, I lettered locations in films—think establishing shots and the intertitles you see that set the scene.

LETTERING STYLE CHALLENGE 2024
Day 30: Flourishes // Location: The Kitchen // Film: The Taste of Things (2023)
I can't believe we're already at day 30! Today's prompt was flourishes, and I wanted to include the film The Taste of Things, after being swept away by it earlier this year. Much of this film takes place in the kitchen, so that's today's location.
This film is overwhelming in its beauty and its complexity. It's a seemingly simple story, with spare sound design and absolutely gorgeous lighting, but each dish they create is so intricate and stunning and such a labor of love. I wanted this lettering to reflect that feeling. "The Kitchen" is such a mundane, everyday place for most of us, but in this film it's filled with warmth and love and patience and everything is carefully considered for each dish to fit together so intentionally. I used a singular line weight for this piece, to mirror the simplicity of it all, but included an overwhelming number of interlocking curves and flourishes as a nod to those intricacies as well.
For the Lettering Style Challenge this year, I’m lettering locations in films—think establishing shots and the intertitles you see that set the scene.

LETTERING STYLE CHALLENGE 2024
Day 29: Geometric // Location: New Rochelle // Film: Challengers (2024)
Today's lettering prompt was geometric, and I thought it would be perfect to pair with New Rochelle, NY—the location of the titular challenger match in Challengers.
Geometric is one of my favorite type styles! I love the basic shapes and feel of it. The thing about geometric lettering is that it's often not actually perfect circles or symmetrical shapesour eyes perceive them differently, so slight optical adjustments have to be made. Circles become ovals, horizontal line widths are adjusted, and other small alterations are what make letters like this seem visually perfect. It's very much a "you know it when you see it" kind of exercise in precision.
For the Lettering Style Challenge this year, I’m lettering locations in films—think establishing shots and the intertitles you see that set the scene.

LETTERING STYLE CHALLENGE 2024
Day 28: Blackletter // Location: Barton Academy // Film: The Holdovers (2023)
Day 28 is blackletter, and the location is Barton Academy, the school in The Holdovers.
Blackletter style lettering felt right for Barton Academy, an old institution with strict traditions. But I wanted this lettering to be less-than-perfect, much like the characters in this film. So the lines aren’t totally straight, the letterforms aren’t symmetrical, they don’t match each other perfectly, but they’re doing their best approximation of what’s expected of them. Maybe that’s a lot of projections to put on some letters…
For the Lettering Style Challenge this year, I’m lettering locations in films—think establishing shots and the intertitles you see that set the scene.

LETTERING STYLE CHALLENGE 2024
Day 27: Script // Location: Somewhere in northern Italy // Film: Call Me By Your Name (2017)
The prompt for day 27 is script, a wonderfully wide style that can go in so many directions. I chose to letter "somewhere in northern Italy," the main setting for the film Call Me By Your Name.
I wanted this lettering to feel loose and casual, as though it was just dashed off quickly. You can see in the process video how many tries it took me to get there—there's a big difference between drawing letters and writing them!

LETTERING STYLE CHALLENGE 2024
Day 26: Celtic // Location: Genovia // Film: The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004)
Day 26’s prompt is Celtic! And for the purposes of this post, I’ve decided that the fictional country of Genovia from The Princess Diaries series has Celtic roots.
I love these movies, and with the news that a third Princess Diaries movie has been greenlit, I had to include Genovia! I looked at a lot of Celtic lettering and tried to create something that felt like it fit the vibe of this small country. I loved how the framing of that N perfectly hugs Mia and Nicholas by the lake! So many images worked so well, it was really tough to choose just four.

LETTERING STYLE CHALLENGE 2024
Day 25: Western // Location: Stillwater Rodeo // Film: Twisters (2024)
We're at the Stillwater Rodeo in Twisters for today's prompt of Western! 🤠
Western is a style I work with about once a year–for this challenge 😂 You might recognize some of these letters from last year's western prompt! I used the same basic letterforms again for this. I loved seeing Twisters this year, and thought there couldn't be a more perfect location for this prompt than the rodeo.

Day 24: Automobile // Location: Rydell High School // Film: Grease (1978)
Today's prompt was automobile, and I thought it would be perfect for Rydell High in Grease!
Obviously my inspiration started with Greased Lightning, and I wanted this lettering to look like metal type you might see on the back of a nice sports car. Getting those long baselines was key. I think it turned out really well!

Day 23: Tattoo // Location: Amity Island // Film: Jaws (1975)
Day 23's prompt was tattoo, and I lettered Amity Island from Jaws.
Tattoo lettering started out pretty nautical, so that's the kind of lettering I went with here. It's imperfect and asymmetrical, and the downstrokes are shaded in about halfway. I think the vibe of this is a bit off kilter and fun for the island town in Jaws.

Day 22: Seventies // Location: AdirondACTS // Film: Theater Camp (2023)
Today's prompt was seventies! I chose AdirondACTS, the theater camp in the film Theater Camp.
I can't remember if the camp in the film was founded in the seventies, but it definitely has that vibe. I really loved playing in this style and making these letters so big and swoopy; it was a lot of fun.

Day 21: Clarendon // Location: Los Alamos // Film: Oppenheimer (2023)
Day 21's prompt was Clarendon, and I thought its bold, sturdy look would fit Los Alamos in Oppenheimer really well.
Today's prompt was a typeface, which felt a bit limiting to me as I was approaching today's piece. I tried to vary its appearance by drawing it just as an outline but adding it a bit of depth, so the letters feel more dimensional and solid.

Day 20: Medieval // Location: Verona // Film: Romeo + Juliet (1996)
For day 20, the prompt was medieval. I lettered Verona from Romeo + Juliet—Verona is the location of the original play, and Verona Beach is the setting for Baz Luhrmann's film.
Medieval lettering is pretty distinct, and I love seeing it over stills from this movie. The dialogue in this film is almost all from the original play, so despite the modern setting, this old style of lettering still feels like it fits.

Day 19: Inline // Location: Miramar // Film: Top Gun (1986)
Today's prompt was inline, and I lettered Miramar, the location of Top Gun flight school in the 1986 film.
I thought the big capital letters would look striking with the middle cut out, and I love the way the overlaps of the M and the A turned out. There were a lot of iconic shots in this location; it was tough to narrow it down!

Day 18: Space // Location: Discovery One // Film: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Day 18's prompt was space, and I think the spacecraft Discovery One is one of the most iconic space locations in film!
For this lettering, I wanted it to feel clean and futuristic. By rounding the corners on the outsides of the letters but leaving the inside corners sharp, you get a very inorganic, machine feel—very technology-driven, just like HAL in this film.

LETTERING STYLE CHALLENGE 2024
Day 17: Serif // Location: Milford Junction // Film: Brief Encounter (1945)
For day 17, the prompt was serif—such an open-ended prompt, which I loved. I chose to letter Milford Junction from the film Brief Encounter.
I wanted this lettering to be very thin, to represent the fleeting nature of Laura and Alec's…well, brief encounter. But I wanted the places where two lines intersected to look like the ink pooled up in those spots, to represent the depth of their feelings when they were together. The style is simple, but it's sweet, and I think reflects the film well!

Day 16: Circus // Location: International Hotel // Film: Elvis (2022)
Today’s prompt was circus, and I lettered a marquee sign for the International Hotel, a key location for Elvis.
I wanted this lettering to look like a bright Vegas sign, and I think the various bulb brightnesses are really visually interesting. I mirrored the shape of the lettering a bit after the signage for Elvis at the hotel—the As in this piece are based on the V from the sign, just upside down. I also used the lightbulb brushes from Aurelie Maron's nostalgia set! 💡

LETTERING STYLE CHALLENGE 2024
Day 15: Pixel // Location: Capital City // Film: The Matrix (1999)
The Matrix was the obvious film choice to pair with today's prompt, pixel. The city in this movie is only ever called "the city," but Neo's passport says Capital City, so that's what I went with.
I really like the way this turned out. I wanted each individual square to still be visible, and the tiny space between them all achieves that. The process video is a very funny example of what happens when you don't name your layers and have a million that all look the same. I love that you can see me turning on and off so many layers to make sure I'm selecting the right ones to duplicate or move around. It almost turns into a glittering effect. This one was really fun!
