Scorpan didn’t need any further invitation. He was a hugger. The gargoyle came in and gave his first friend a tighter hug than the old wizard may have expected. Despite now being significantly older, Scorpan still had some strength it seemed.

“I share my brother’s longevity,” Scorpan said as he broke the hug. “Though, since I don’t feed off of magic anymore, I’ve... felt the aging process more than him. But look at you. Time really didn’t pass at all for you. Astounding.”

“Wha-- How is it my fault?! The mess with Grogar happened before Tirek or I were even born! That’s like blaming me for the Wendigos!”

“... To be fair, I absolutely would have ratted you out as soon as the details of your plan became clear. I don’t know how you thought it was a good idea to let my brother... who, need I remind you, is obsessed with stealing magic... get his hands on the most power magic-stealing artifact in existence. 

“I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were working on some sort of... nonlinear chaos logic.”

Scorpan frowned. “I wish I could look at it like that. I’ve had a thousand years to try and cut Tirek out of my life, but a part of me is always going to miss him. Still, I can’t deny that I’ve certainly thrived in his absence. 

“Something about a life well-lived being the best form of revenge, right?”

What were your parents like?

I… don’t remember very well. My parents passed away over a thousand years ago, and my childhood is very fuzzy. Most of what I remember is Tirek doing something and them getting angry at him.

I suppose the best way to describe them would be… distant, but they cared.

“ … well. My own siblings didn’t treat ME terrible well either, so. Maybe it IS just the way some families are … ”

Siblings? Having one brother had been bad enough. Scorpan couldn’t imagine what his childhood would have been like with multiple Tireks pushing him around.

All the old gargoyle could do was give a small shrug.

“I don’t know about families, but maybe some people are just... bad. I realize that’s highly cynical, but after all these years it’s the conclusion I most frequently come to. And it breaks my heart every time I think about it.”

Scorpan waved a claw in the air at his oldest friend’s flattery. Despite himself, Scorpan had a smile just as big as the wizard’s on his wrinkled face.

“That’s kind of you to say, old friend, but I own a mirror; I can see what I look like. I don’t think I look bad, though. Just a bit... weathered, I suppose is a good word.”

Scorpan trailed off a bit before giving Star Swirl a smaller smile. “It’s good to see you again, Star Swirl. It’s been far too long.”

Are you and Tirek really related?

“What? Of course we are. I mean, look at us; the family resemblance is uncanny. We’re practically twins.”

“He basically bullied everyone. Me, his peers, our family’s servants, our own parents... The only person he was ever sweet towards was our dear Gram-Gram, and that was only because she was as bad as him.

“Ugh. The worst part was, he was the only friend I had growing up. I assumed the way he treated me was just what brothers did, you know? I feel like I was such a fool...”

“Oh, no, he’s not... I mean... Well, he’s not stupid. He is horrible. I still love my brother, despite everything, but he is horrible.

“Do you know how bad he was when we were younger? Every year he would melt my birthday cake with that fire of his; actually melt it. Mother and father tried looking into making fire-proof cake, but you can’t cook those, so he kept doing it. Every year!”

“Fair enough. But I suppose that the fact that his own brother isn’t reason enough to change is what bothers me most...
