Mornings in Black Spire were pretty close to perfect — still a light chill in the air before the suns fully rose, quiet streets before the shops opened, and, perhaps best of all, no screw ups…yet. Well, if you didn’t count the inventory list the previous night’s shift didn’t bother to finish, but he could probably just pass that off to Kel’cy, right? It was almost peaceful, even, with the more competent employees working this time of day — their questions were about what they should do, and they actually went to do them! (Wow, his standards were low.)

With a yawn, he leaned against the busted ship currently docked in the hanger, datapad in hand, and pushed out the last of the shift assignments. Hey, just because the mornings were nice didn’t mean he wasn’t tired…one cup of caf only went so far. He glanced up only at the interruption — though, not exactly what he thought the first complaint of the day would be. “Den of thieves?” he smirked, almost impressed. “That’s a little generous, I think — but most of our muggings happen after lunch actually, so…”

He’s smirking, and fires right back. Good. This is good. She can work with this. She hadn’t offended him, and he doesn’t seem to disagree with her. [ After lunch. Ha. He’s a funny one. ]

“I guess that’s fair enough,” she allows, before her gaze wanders over the hangar and then back to him, scrutinizing him. 

There’s something about his posture, his general demeanor that exudes an easy air of confidence, the sort that seems almost exclusive to those who do their job well and know it, the sort who take a certain amount of pride in what they do and put stock in it.

While she’s certain he isn’t The Boss––an old Weequay, from what she understood––she suspects he’s not far from it. [ Perhaps he is the transport company’s manager, the one that everyone had referred to as Hondo’s boy. ]

“… If you don’t mind, I’ll cut straight to the point so that I don’t waste your time or mine. My name is Ranna Varik. I made some enquiries and was told that this place is hiring. I know next to nothing about mechanics or engineering beyond the most basic of repairs, and I’m only a slightly above-average pilot at best, but I do have certain skills that might prove useful, particularly in regards to security.”

Straightforward, blunt. It might not be the most personable method of attempting to secure a job, but she’s never had much use for the empty flattery or pointless conversation that many choose to employ. 

She needs a job, not a new friend.

It’s a problem. A whole collection of them, really. Food is a necessity, as is fuel for her ship, and both of those things cost credits. As did the fee to have landed her ship. As does the fee to leave, apparently. The last one sounds like a racket, to her, but nobody around here seems to be complaining so pursuing that won’t get her any money. 

Which meant that after inquiries made whilst having a drink at the cantina the night before––something on the cheap side because the last few jobs have been for food and lodgings, not credits, and she’s running low––she rises early in the morning, readies for the day, and follows up on her lead, going over to the one place everyone seems certain is hiring.

[ They’re always hiring over there! she had been assured by several of the cantina’s patrons. ]

With the suns just barely over the horizon line, she knows it’s a bit early to approach someone about a job, especially with how the other patrons made it sound like the owner was a bit of a [ party animal ] night owl, but… No harm no foul, right?

She follows the directions given to her the night before, and, laying eyes on the place, she can’t say she’s terribly impressed.

She’s even less so when she can walk right up onto the property and over to where the repair bays are without so much as one person of the few milling about asking who she is or why she’s there. 

Making her way over to the bay where she had seen a few of those people talk with someone––presumably for direction and instruction if the body language and expressions of the ones who had been facing her were anything to go by––she stops just at the threshold of the bay door and simply watches for a moment before she speaks.

“Your security’s lousy.”

……… Though, perhaps that wasn’t the most diplomatic opener when seeking employment…

It’s… salvageable… [ She’s fairly certain, at least. ]

“… What I mean… is that it’s a little of a liability, don’t you think, in terms of safety and the bottom line? Unless, of course, my first impression of this place being a den of thieves is wrong. Though, can you blame me with the fees they seem to find reasons to tack on?” she adds with a smile.

Ranna is essentially a troubleshooter/security-for-hire in her main verse, though exceedingly discerning. She refuses to work for anything or anyone Imperial (or First Order, verse dependent) or for anyone tied up with them. 

As one might imagine with such stipulations, she tends to work for companies (with payment of credits), but she has also been known to do work in exchange for meals and a roof over her head until the job is done.
