very rough animatic/style frame for the collaborative project done in a recent session. In this session we divided up lines of the script between the animators and I’m taking on the bulk of the animation work along side Lois. I’ll be animating roughly a minute or so of the 2.5-3 minute runtime of the piece. I’m confident that I can get this done as I will be animating digitally and the style is quick and easy to work in digitally, particularly in blender with its compositing workspace. I’ve been working on my rigging skills in accordance with my goals around professional/specialist skills.
This animatic/ style frame depicts a mass of mechanical parts pulsating like a heart or organ while falling apart. this will be paired with the line “The body, a machine; biological. An apparatus of life bleeding itself to death through continued functionality, its prime purpose seeming only to be that of a prison“ there will be a zoom on these mechanical parts which reveals a structure akin to prison bars.
I’ve done a test animation of a mechanical arm to practice rigging and essentially my plan would be to attach many mechanical arms together to achieve this complex mass. as shown in the style frame I will be using my previously established methods to shade this animation as a silhouette at a low frame rate and to give it a traditional animation aesthetic

Week 2 Progress Summary 25/01/21 - 31/01/21
Monday 25th Jan:
Set up of iStopmotion
Team meeting including Lottie
Review of script and subsequent meeting with miles:
Meeting Notes/Activity:
Green= No change needed
Neon Blue= Needs rewording
Yellow= Suggestion/replacement
Red= Cut
Orange= Co-written (by myself and Miles) / Negotiated whilst in meeting/ Simultaneous editing.
Pale Blue= Finalised
The first half of the script has already gone through edits and changes at this point; but the second half needed quite a lot of work upon personal review as well as review from the overall group- through a combined effort, and a more ‘micro-management-like’ directorial approach on my end, the outcome of the script was much more in line with my creative vision.
Tomorrow is the deadline for the script as I need to send it to our voice actor Ian by Wednesday, ready to record Friday. So tomorrow I plan on running the script as it is now past the group again, just to get a general sense on how everyone is feeling about it going forward.
Tuesday 26th Jan:
Review of script with group: minor changes made.
Wednesday 27th Jan:
Sending Script to Voice Actor Ian & asking for some rough audio by tomorrow after getting some feedback from Jon in a timetabled session.
Thursday 28th Jan:
Division of lines/Animation sections & quick fire animatics
Meeting Notes:
-Lines have been divided but this is subject to slight change over the weekend once we have the final audio.
-Ideas based on lines have been formed and tested in the form of very rough animatics.
-Lottie is yet to confirm their ability to collaborate, if they cannot complete their assigned section, either Sam, Ruth or myself will ensure the completion.
-Plans going forward up until Monday: keep sketching and testing ideas.
Received rough audio tests from Ian (voice actor) // placed them in order into adobe audition- looked at length, analysed tonality and pronunciation in preparation for the official recording tomorrow. Discussed voice acting thus far with the team in an evening meeting.// set up a zoom call which both Ian and Geoff can access.
Friday 29th Jan:
Recording of voice acting; simultaneous zoom call for live feedback.
(A few screenshots from the call):
(Directing ‘with hands’) // (Ian in character)
Audio Tracks received from Geoff via we transfer:

Surrealism
surrealism /səˈrɪəlɪz(ə)m/
noun a 20th-century avant-garde movement in art and literature which sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind, for example by the irrational juxtaposition of images.
Chaos and unconscious desires.
Imagination. Psychoanalysis.
Sigmund Freud’s “The Interpretation of Dreams” (1899) was an important piece of literature, particularly influential. Importance of dreams, human emotion and desire.
Imagery from this movement is personal and as such can be difficult to define. Based on own recurring motifs, dreams. Uncanny, perplexing. Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, Joan Miró, René Magritte.
"The Bureau for Surrealist Research or Centrale Surréaliste was also established in Paris in 1924. This was a loosely affiliated group of writers and artists who met and conducted interviews to “gather all the information possible related to forms that might express the unconscious activity of the mind.”“

Writing Progress & editing
Progress on Writing by Miles thus far:
We have been using google docs in conjunction with video chats to confirm and edit sections of the script
Half of the wordcount has been complete thus far, with a reading coming out at 1.25mins -need about double this to fill the target of 2.5-3 mins. Highlighted in blue is a section of the text I would like to be changed (reasoning: too repetitive in language).
These are the original collection of sentences, highlighted in red are unusable (Unsuited to the project/incorrect tone or too overt). The remaining text has been used, edited and rearranged. Into the above paragraph.
Meeting notes:
-On the right track
-Needs doubling in word count
-Check in again on Sunday 24/01/21

Shark Jaw test animation.
Cut out animation, captured using qslrdashboard, post production in Aftereffects and Premier pro. Importing an image sequence into premier pro, and editing the frame rate of the imported sequence to 8fps. Colour grading in AfterEffects. Sound: tableltopaudio.com
-The cut out animation process includes cutting out each frame pre-production, and then photographing them in a sequential order in order to create the illusion of motion. I start out by cutting the keyframes and then add inbetween frames as needed.
-Once photographed the image sequence can be imported into premier pro and converted to a suitable frame rate- for this animation the frame rate runs at 8fps. The sequence can then be colour graded in either premier pro or aftereffects depending on preference.
-Once colour grading has been complete the sequence can then be exported through the media encoder as a .mov or AVI internal file. Sound des can also be added before or after exporting using a combination of adobe audition and premier pro.
This test was a quick fire test using the equipment I have currently gathered; however in production of the animated content for ‘Forlorn’ I intend on using istopmotion to capture images instead of qdslrdashboard in order to increase efficiency.
