How I Get My Hair Platinum/White Blonde â 1. Use the right lightener- Right now Iâve been using the lightener we have at the salon I work at called âFlashliftâ by Redken along with the Redken PH bonder with 30 volume developer. But when I was doing my hair on my own I used the Loreal blue toned bleach along with 30 volume developer that worked just as nicely you can get it at Sallyâs beauty store. I have tried Kaleidocolors and violet toned lighteners but they never seem to be powerful enough to get my hair to the right level. Note: If you have previously colored your hair (not with lightener which removes color) you might want to do a strand test and leave lightener on for the recommended time and see what shade it turns. If shade is still very orangey or red you may not be able to achieve the right results on your own til you grow out that part of your hair thatâs been colored. Itâs always best to see a salon professional but if you have color in your hair thatâs when Iâd HIGHLY recommend seeing one to make sure you donât compromise the health of your hair.
2. Leave on til it turns pale yellow- Now I have naturally dark blonde hair so when I add lightener to my hair it turns light real quick. If you have darker hair you may not get it at the right tone the first shot so the key is patience and wait two-three weeks to lighten again to the right level. Never leave lightener on for longer than the recommended time. Also dont overprocess hair that has already been lightened previously to the right tone. Make sure you are only applying lightener where your hair needs it. As shown above my hair was only dark through the top so I concentrated in that area and didnât spread any lightener through the ends. Optional: You can run coconut oil through hair before lightening to prevent extensive damage.
3. Use toner- For toner I mix the Redken toners Shades EQ 9N and 9T equal parts (sometimes maybe a little more 9N to make sure I donât overtone). My hair is very porous especially after I use lightener so thatâs why I mix my toner with a neutral tone so my hair doesnât turn silver or purple. What I once used was the Wella Color Charm T18 also found at Sallyâs before I started working with Redken products at the salon which worked nicely but can overtone if you leave it in too long. So depending on how porous and how much brass is in your hair you might want to leave it in for a lesser amount of time thatâs recommended or mix with a neutral tone at the same level. If hair turns too silvery or purple you can shampoo your hair two to three times more than you normally would to get rid of the overtone. Or use a clarifying shampoo (which I would only use as a last resort since that can really dry out your hair).
4. Upkeep- Over time as the toner slowly washes away you might start to see more yellow tones in your hair that you may not like. What I use is a violet toned shampoo every now and then to make sure my hair stays nice and platinum. I never use every time I wash my hair just when I start to see the yellow I donât want. And because my hair is porous I will often mix it with sulfate free shampoo to dilute the purple (I have ended up with purple streaks in my hair from not being careful enough yikes!). So what Iâve been using thus far is the Clairol Shimmer lights shampoo (I donât use the conditioner because it tends to overtone my hair). So I alternate between using the violet toned shampoo and regular shampoo because the violet toned shampoo can be drying if used too frequently which is the last thing you need after chemically processing your hair.
So there you have it. Just a few things Iâve learned through the years about achieving and maintaining platinum hair. Thank you so much for reading! I hope at least one of these pointers are able to help you in some way if you are looking to achieve this color. Below is a list of links of products that have worked for me. I am planning on doing a separate post on how I maintain the health of my hair. Note: Everyoneâs hair is different so results may be different and may take longer to achieve. If your hair is already extensively damaged I would prioritize focusing on the health of your hair and work on the color later đ.
