Pairing - Dwight “Dewey” Riley x female!reader
Word count - 1.6k ish
Warnings - none.
After you left Dewey, the weight of everything that had happened settled on your shoulders. The school building loomed ahead, and with each step closer, your heartbeat picked up. You tried to shake the uneasy feeling that had crept into your stomach ever since the attack last night. It felt as though everyone was watching you—judging you, even though you were just another bystander to Sidney’s trauma. But now, it didn’t feel like that. You were part of it.
The hallways buzzed with morning chatter. Groups of students leaned against lockers, laughing, gossiping, unaware of the horrors lurking just beyond their world. You noticed the way some eyes lingered on Sidney from afar. It wasn’t just Sidney the town was talking about—last night’s terror had rippled through the whole community. But it was still a small relief that they weren’t paying too much attention to you. Yet.
You pulled the straps of your backpack tighter on your shoulders and moved towards Tatum's locker, where you were supposed to meet her and Sidney. The echo of your footsteps down the corridor seemed louder, sharper, as if the very air in the school had turned colder, more hostile. Your mind wandered back to Dewey’s comforting words: “You’re in school. You’ll be safe here."
But would you really?
You tried to force those thoughts away as you approached Tatum’s locker, but that creeping feeling of being watched never left you. It hung in the air, thick and suffocating.
Stu was leaning against the lockers, looking like his usual goofy self. He was holding Tatums mirror in his hands, probably checking his hair. Meanwhile, Tatum was talking to him getting her things from her locker, but Sid was nowhere in sight.
"Hey," you said, your voice coming out quieter than you expected. Tatum gave you a half-smile, but Stu only gave you a half hearted nod.
"Hey," Tatum replied. "You good?" Her question was casual, but there was a slight tension in her voice.
"Yeah," you nodded, but your eyes drifted to try and find Sidney. "Where’s Sid?"
Tatum looked up, meeting your gaze. “She went to the bathroom.”
You nodded in understanding. It was hard to imagine what she must be going through—having almost been killed, and now everyone was watching her every move, waiting for her to break. It made your own nerves feel insignificant by comparison.
You leaned back against the lockers, trying to blend into the background, but that feeling of being watched kept tugging at your mind. You looked around the hallway, scanning the faces of passing students, but no one seemed out of place. Yet, the hairs on the back of your neck prickled.
"What’s wrong?" Tatum asked, noticing your distraction.
"Nothing," you lied, but your eyes flicked back over the crowd again. Something wasn’t right.
Before you could shake the thought, the bell rang. Its shrill sound made you jump, and you quickly tried to cover it with a laugh, feeling embarrassed. Stu didn’t notice, but Tatum raised an eyebrow at you.
"You sure you’re okay?" she pressed.
"Yeah," you insisted. "Just... tired."
Tatum shrugged, unconvinced but letting it go. As the three of you started walking towards your first class individually, you couldn’t help but glance over your shoulder one last time.
There, at the far end of the hallway, just for a brief second, you thought you saw someone standing still, just watching. But by the time you blinked, they were gone.
Your heart skipped a beat, but you shook it off, telling yourself you were just being paranoid. Still, as you made your way through the crowd, you couldn’t escape the nagging thought that something was very, very wrong.
The rest of your first class was a blur. You couldn't focus, your mind racing with thoughts of last night, the uneasy feeling that something was lurking just beyond sight. By the time the bell rang, you practically bolted out of your seat, eager to meet up with Sidney and Tatum by their lockers, where you all agreed to meet after class.
As you approached the lockers, you spotted Tatum leaning against them with her arms crossed, looking visibly agitated. Her eyes darted around, and she was shifting her weight from one foot to the other. Sidney was standing with her back to the lockers, hugging her arms tightly around her chest, her face pale and drawn. When she saw you approach, her eyes flickered with a mix of relief and anxiety.
“What’s going on? Did something happen? I heard all classes are suspended and there’s a curfew.” you asked as soon as you reached them, sensing the tension in the air.
Tatum shot a glance at Sidney, who seemed to hesitate before speaking. Finally, Sid let out a shaky breath and said, “Something happened… in the bathroom.”
Your heart sank instantly. "What do you mean?" you asked, your voice barely hiding the panic rising in your throat, as the three of you started to walk towards the exit.
Sidney looked down at the floor, avoiding your gaze. When she finally spoke again, her voice trembling, she said. “I was washing up and… I heard this voice. It was whispering.” She swallowed hard, her fingers gripping her arms tighter. “It was the same voice I heard on the phone last night.”
You glanced nervously around the hallway, but no one else seemed to notice the conversation taking place between the three of you.
“Oh my god…” you whispered.
Sidney looked up, her eyes wide and filled with fear. “It started to say my name… It was hiding in one of the stalls. It was him, with the robe and the mask.”
Your stomach dropped. “But how did you—?”
Sidney shook her head quickly. “I ran. I didn’t stop to think, I just ran out of the bathroom. There were too many people around in the hallway, so he couldn’t follow me without causing a scene.”
You couldn’t help but imagine what that must have been like for her—the terror of facing him again, the very person who tried to kill her last night, now lurking in the one place she should have been safe. Your mind was racing, trying to make sense of it all. How could this killer slip into the school so easily, blend in with the crowd, and get so close to Sidney again?
“That’s insane,” you breathed, glancing at the others.
Tatum let out a frustrated sigh. “Principal Himbry is freaking out, of course. He’s practically ready to shut down the whole school, but they haven’t found anything yet. No sign of the guy.”
“Yeah, as usual,” you said bitterly, crossing her arms.
“It was probably just some sick fuck having a laugh, Sid.” Tatum said, trying to help everyone calm their nerves.
“No, it was him, Tatum. I know it .” Sidney said fiercely.
“Well, you’re not to be alone anymore. If you pee, we pee.” Tatum said, looking at Sid reassuringly. “Is that clear?” You nodded.
You reached out and gently touched Sid on the arm, trying to offer some form of comfort. “We’re going to figure this out. You’re not alone in this, okay?”
Sid nodded, but her eyes remained distant, lost in the nightmare she couldn’t escape. Just then, Stu appeared behind then, all smiles and happiness like nothing out of the ordinary was happening around the town at all.
"Cizzool cuz scizzool is izzout." He continued as he offered each one of you a flower. "I don't know what you did, Sidney, but on behalf of the entire student body, we all say, "THANK YOU!"."
You grimaced at his words, and noticed that Sid as well as Tatum didn't find as funny as Stu thought.
"Drop it, Stu." Said Tatum, hitting him on the back with the flower she received seconds ago.
But Stu quickly continued, picking up Tatum in the process. "No, I say, an impromptu party tonight, my house. Celebrate this little siesta. What do you say?"
Sidney and you shared a look, and Sid finally opened her mouth and said, "Are you serious?".
Stu continued while rolling Tatum around. "This little vixen doesn't invite the entire world, we'll be fine." Stu settled Tatum on the ground and spoke directly towards you and Sid. "Intimate gathering, intimate friends."
"What do you say Sid? Y/n?" Tatum asked hopefully, looking towards both of you. "I mean, pathos could have its perks."
Stu chimed in. "Totally protect you. Yo, I'm so buff. I got you covered girls."
Sid sighed, clearly conflicted. "I don't know." You nodded along to her words.
Tatum grabbed Sid's hand, as we all stopped walking, and said. "I mean, come on, Sid. For me? It could be fun."
Sid sighed and finally relented. "Okay. Whatever." You glanced at her, concerned.
"Yeah? Nice." Stu said, as the three of you walked off. "You guys bring food, okay?".
As you all walked toward Dewey, who was waiting by the car, you noticed how protective his posture was as you approached. His eyes were immediately on Sidney, filled with concern. "Everything okay?" He asked, his voice calm but edged with worry. His eyes darted to each of you.
“We’re fine,” Tatum said rolling her eyes at him. “Stu’s throwing a party tonight.”
Dewey raised an eyebrow, clearly not thrilled at the idea. “A party? Right now?” A small frown settling on his face. “I don’t think it’s a good idea, especially after what happened today, Sid.”
Sidney sighed, crossing her arms. “I know, Dewey. I’m just… tired of hiding, you know? I don’t want to feel trapped anymore.”
Tatum backed her up. “Besides, it's just for a few hours, Dewey. You’ll be around, and we’ll be careful.”
Dewey looked at you for your opinion, his expression full of concern. “What do you think?”
You were quiet for the entire conversation. You shrugged slightly, though you could feel the same knot of anxiety tightening in your stomach again. “We’ll all stick together. If anything feels off, we’ll leave. Besides, you’ll be there, right?”
Dewey sighed, clearly still hesitant but not wanting to push too hard. “Fine. I’ll be there too. But if anything feels wrong, we’re all getting out of there. No arguments.”
Sidney offered a small, tired smile, but the worry never left her eyes. You could tell that even though she agreed to the party, a part of her was still on edge—maybe more than any of you realized.
Dewey opened the car door for you all, and as you slid into the backseat, you couldn’t shake the nagging feeling that tonight, despite Stu’s reassurances, something might go horribly wrong.
