Your art is so rich and lovely, I adore how real you make the Hearthians feel! The whiskers were inspired, honestly

Do you think you could talk some about your process? Especially anatomy/character design and composition? Im working hard on understanding and improving my own style right now, so I’m asking some of my favorite artists how they learned theirs. Practice, but what kind of practice, what kind of references and resources? I want to know more about how you make these aliens feel so alien and yet so grounded

i'm a little unwell so i apologise if anything i say is confusing! im very sleepy 🙏 but i would say the biggest thing is observing real-life animals (and other organisms! i'll admit moss sporophores have inspired my love of whiskery things) and taking note of all sorts of details. and then taking those details and playing around with them a bunch!

for instance, since we're talking about hearthians, below is a doodle page on how i decided how to draw them, and the different beasties i based them off! namely: cats, because i'm a big fan of how their noses are curved, the siplicity of their faces, and because funnily enough (and most importantly) they're proportionally similiar to humans (which works for a humanoid species, and acts as a nice bridge between human and nonhuman features). this is also what's responsible for the whiskers placement! and the complexity of their inner ears

aside from the fact i needed to make them roughly human without straying too far into animal territory, i took inspiration from creatures that fit their niche: that is, mostly catfish and loaches (hence the presence of whiskers in the first place), newts for their digits, and koi for the spots. if you look in the right places, you can find a lot of parallels between very different species! again, whiskers. webbing on paws/feet. similar tails on both catfish and tadpoles. and so on

so, big takeaway is find connections between different things and use those to your advantage. blend weird shit together and find middle grounds!

as for shape language etc:

shitty photos, but i like to draw weird organic shapes, and play with stylising different parts of animal's bodies. i went through a phase of just absolutely loving teeth. i drew a lot of teeth. im in a wiggly cartilage phase at the moment, as you may have noticed from how i draw their ears
