“I think our goal should be to give birth to ourself before we die.” -Jane Fonda
Good lord. Where do I even start? Tonight was seriously one of the best nights of my life. Jane is such an incredibly smart woman. I mean, I knew this going in… but there is something about getting to listen to an entire evening of her perspective about her life and the world that is just such a precious gift that I don’t take lightly.
Some of the highlights:
Graham told her she was a medical miracle because of how great she looks at 80 and that she seems to have not been touched by time. Her response was along the lines of “oh, I’ve been touched by time. This knee is fake, this hip is fake, this thumb actually is from a cadaver. But you know, I have good posture, I stay healthy, I’ve had plastic surgery, and I have a good attitude. And the most important thing of all of that is the attitude.”
They played the scene from the end of Klute where she is listening and reacting to the tape of her friend being murdered being played for her by the man who killed her, and she said that it was a difficult thing to watch tonight in the current climate with all of the violence against women that is still prevalent. Later in the evening, she answered a question about what she’d say to her younger self and what she’d say to men now. To herself, “no is a complete sentence.” To men, “stand with women. Believe us when we talk about these things. And don’t laugh when someone says at a party ‘listen what I did to so-and-so’; report it.”
They opened up the floor to audience questions (which I’m always scared by because I get such secondhand embarrassment, but there were none that were really bad so I was thankful for that!)
A woman was there who was the daughter of this famous Vietnamese actress and there’s this photo of her as a baby on her mother’s lap next to Jane with baby Troy on her lap. And this was that little girl all grown up. Jane’s reaction was so precious and she was so incredibly touched getting to see (and presumably meet afterward) her tonight. The woman sent her love from her mother and the Vietnamese people as a whole for all that Jane did for them back during the war.
She talked a bit about the current political climate in the US and I’m paraphrasing here so please don’t quote me on this. (As an American, I know how Americans go over-board when someone voices their opinions about Republican presidents while in London. What up, Natalie Maines?) Someone asked how Trump happened, and she said that Trump didn’t start with Trump, it started with neo-liberalism, and with us not taking the tea party seriously. That in campaigning, the middle of America was brushed over in their concerns and the right swooped in and paid them that attention and fed their anger. And what we can do about it– because we have to do something about it, the survival of the globe as a whole depends on it– is that we all need to work on the ground level, go canvassing door to door, look people in the eye and not hate them, let them know they are heard and we’re going to work together to fix things. (Again, that was the gist. I wish I could remember it verbatim because she is so passionately eloquent about it.) She was also asked about whether there was a role she hasn’t played yet that she’d like to, and her response was that she doesn’t think about that much, but that she wants to dedicate her remaining time to getting rid of Trump.
She talked about how she hated the first season of Grace and Frankie and that she had to start going to therapy while filming it, which most of us have heard before. But this part I hadn’t heard, so I’ll expound: she didn’t like Grace at first and thought if she had to put together a backstory for her, she wouldn’t know where to begin. And she was doing the press kits to promote season 1 and watched them back and was like “if I were watching these, I wouldn’t be excited about the show.” So she went to therapy and the therapist invited Grace to come into the room, and through that experience, she fell in love with Grace. (I think that may be why seasons 2-3 Grace feel like they have a bit of Jane’s own narrative woven into Grace’s backstory. Not that she said that explicitly, just my own observation.)
Someone told her that her comedic timing on Grace and Frankie was phenomenal, and she seemed genuinely touched. I was so happy someone mentioned it because as she’s said, she doesn’t think she’s funny
There is obviously stuff I’m forgetting. She talked about wanting Grace to let her hair go gray (mixed reactions from the audience, but I definitely heard a “yaaass queen!” from across the room lol.) She ended with a lovely philosophy about death (“just as light gives meaning to dark, as silence gives meaning to sound, so does death give meaning to life”) that I wish I could remember past that quote. But it was such an amazing evening that I will cherish forever.
And then there was this:
No big deal… just casually dying inside from a brain explosion… like you do.
#will always take an opportunity to share one of the best evenings of my life#in honor of her 87th bday#jane fonda#love of my life#my face

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JANE FONDA!
The old paradigm was: You’re born, you peak at midlife, and then you decline into decrepitude. Looking at aging as ascending a staircase, you gain well-being, spirit, soul, wisdom, the ability to be truly intimate and a life with intention.
#sitting here wearing my rainbow stripe fonda hoodie lol#happy birthday to this beautiful soul!!#jane fonda

I love how Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel specifically cameoed during One Short Day, because that’s the song where Glinda and Elphaba are talking about their future together- a future that we know they’ll never get. BUT having Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth there feels like we got to see a version of Elphaba and Glinda who DID get their happy ending together living in the Emerald City 💚
#omg stopppp#this is too much for my heart to take 🥹#wicked#this reminds me of a rizzles/fried green tomatoes fic by kate kane#called 'there's more than one version'#but anyway i'm in my gelphie feelings again 🩷💚
