The idea that conservatives decrease government spending is false

Malcolm Fraser came in to power with positive financial assets and with Howard as treasurer switched that into large debt that Bob Hawke had to fix. Paul Keating as treasurer had three consecutive budgets where government spending decreased, returning it to a surplus. Keating as PM had to lead Australia to recovery from a global recession, so Howard could take over with good economic conditions - only for Howard to become Australia’s most wasteful spender according to an IMF study of 55 economies over 200 years. He hid this by selling off assets and riding off the back of the mining boom - which if Rudd had the same economic conditions instead of having to once again help Australia through a global recession then he too would’ve had a large budget surplus. Now Morrison as treasurer followed by PM has piled on more debt than all previous governments combined while increasing military spending harshly.

What do we see instead? Fraser heavily restricted then eventually abolished Medibank (Whitlam’s precursor to Medicare that Hawke had to bring back), Howard cut health funding, Abbot cut health funding, Morrison cut health funding. They’ve resisted for decades calls to raise welfare and publicly shamed anyone on it. Public services have been privatised on a state and federal level, leading to increased costs for the public as services that once benefitted them have turned into profitable business models for private industries. They then ramp up spending on private contracts given out without proper tenders to donors to their party or friends of the party. 

If we do see them putting forward lower cost options - it’s often on infrastructure projects that under perform, or the budget estimate was wrong making it no less expensive (like the NBN). Conservative “money saving” is the equivalent of buying cheap plastic crap instead of a sturdy long lasting quality product. It’s a waste that requires more money to be spent again and again to fix the mess that it created.

Conservative ideas of “smaller government” aren’t “less spending.” It often is more spending - just not on things that benefit the public.

Honestly one of the main reasons to assume Luigi Mangione was framed by the NYPD is that the UHC shooter not only had no reason to carry around a manifesto, he had no reason to even write a manifesto.
