I know Bray Head when I see it.
Fun fact - the walkway under the cliffs has been closed for YEARS now due to a landslide that happened at one point and instead of fixing the terrain somehow, they just smacked a "CLOSED" sign on it and called it a day. We went on a hike there once while visiting Dublin. Started in Bray and climbed the hill because obviously, the view is lovely and the yellow bushes were in their full coconut-scented bloom.
On the way back we thought - eh, who cares about the landslide, let's go back under the cliffs. We saw from up top that there were people walking there in the direction of going back to Bray. We thought, it cannot be that bad if there are people still using the path now, can it?
WRONG
after the entire hike (quite tired and thirsty and just dying for a Guinness at the beach), at the end of the cliff walk, almost back at Bray, we were met with the angriest, spiky-looking solid metal gate that extended both up the cliff on the left and over the chasm on the right. feck.
while standing there dumbfounded and thinking of ways to climb over this spiky-ass gate, we saw a bunch of people behind us also going to the gate, as well as an elderly gentleman just strolling around the little sitting area on the other side of the gate.
I tried climbing at the up-the-cliff portion but no luck. Then the people behind us caught up on us and went to climb directly over the right side, above the 10-meter-deep cliff fall with a train track at the bottom, around the massive spikes that extended to the right. at that point we said eh fuck it and climbed around the gate too. Wasn't that hard if one didn't think about the chasm and horrible death by falling on the train tracks...
afterwards, while sitting at the beach bar and stuffing our faces with fish and fries we thought that the elderly gentleman must go there every day on his afternoon stroll, watching hapless tourists climb the stupid gate, as his daily entertainment.
In Czech, there is a saying that you got lost because you stepped over a magic getting-lost-root.
Idk what root i stepped over back when I first was here in 2022 ...

but guess what, I ended up on this trail again, even though I planned to go to the town on the opposite end of the commuter rail network, see the one on the hill in the distance.

Like what the fuck.

They should put some extra warning here, smth along the lines that a piece of your heart might get stuck in the crumbling cliffs, and you'll inexplicably keep coming back.

my personal pick for most underrated animal is the european legless lizard, which i think is often taken to just look like a normal and rather plain snake, but if you're familiar with reptile anatomy at all it looks more like some sort of bizarre heraldic fantasy creature than basically anything else on earth

#ooh I love these little dudes#they are harmless and cute but their tail breaks off if you try to catch them

Miluju jak na těch bylinkových webech rozepisují na sedm odrážek, že bylinka má čistící učinky a reálně to znamená, že má dobrý vliv na vylučovací soustavu. Pořád budeš piča, i když tý pampelišky vypiješ hektolitry, Ireno

I like this time of year when the other trees are mostly leafless and you can see little white dots in the hills here and there—the wild cherry trees in bloom ♡
Also is there a softer light than April evening light.

Co je to prosim so strednymi skolami, ktore v snahe priviest studentov na spravnu krestansku cestu zrusia gauce na chodbe?
Nasa (prepytujem katolicka) to spravila tiez. Ani tie sedatka tam nedali namiesto gaucov.
dobrá práce, tvl, ani pamfletama by člověk takovej úspěšnej nábor nevyrobil.

Happy World Wetlands Day!
A yearly reminder that wetlands are an essential part of local ecosystems and their protection is necessary to mitigate climate change!
Go say hi to your local bog! Learn about plants and critters that live there!
Here are some cool photos of wetlands I took on my research trips:

Blanket bog on the slopes of Austrian Alps

Alaskan permafrost

Alpine peat bog

Alpine glacier lake turned peat bog

Lowland swampy pine forest near a fishing pond

Norwegian tundra

No but seriously. Normalize finding love in your 40's. Normalize discovering and chasing new dreams in your 30's. Normalize finding yourself and your purpose in your 50's. Life doesn't end at 25. Let's stop acting like it does.

in the Fairbanks University library I found a book from 1939 that completely changed my perspective on the folk tales of bog bilberry toxicity.
However, it is now SUPREMELY disappointing to find out that the author of this book, Åke Ohlmarks, was the first translator of The Lord of the Rings into Swedish and he fucked up SO SPECTACULARLY, that he pissed off JRRT himself, prompting him to compile his Guide to the Names in The Lord of the Rings.
To cite Wikipedia: "As a result of the severe criticism directed against his translation of The Lord of the Rings, both by Tolkien himself and by Swedish Tolkien fandom, Ohlmarks in the late 1970s began to display hostility towards the "Tolkien phenomenon", and in 1982 published a book titled Tolkien and Black Magic, expounding a conspiracy theory connecting Tolkien and Tolkien fandom with Nazi occultism."
What the everloving fuck, my dude.

🚨 SCAM JOB ALERT🚨
Watch out for any job listings that claim you’ll cruise the seas for American gold, fire no guns, and shed no tears. These are all scams and the job is NOT as advertised. Source: I fell for it and am now a broken man on a Halifax pier
