“….isn’t this meant to be a school for troubled kids? why does everyone look like they’ve been taken off of a runway and dumped in this psychopathic education centre?”
it bugs her, it’s not right. everyone here looks too perfect, too pretty, too pure. she’s never trusted things that look too perfect, perfect things are fabricated- the only question is who fabricated them and why.
is this a crack at his hair? hopefully not, because he’s not the only one in this room whose head smells like chemicals. he’ll assume she’s not talking about him. her point is more than valid, though. and it only backs up his own theory that the kids at this school are not deranged-- they’re just CHEATS who wiggled out of legal repercussions by playing nuts. but then he remembers that, well, he IS posing as one of those aforementioned cheats who got away with murder, so, yes, she is talking about him. Ian Moon is the suspiciously sane-seeming boy with a secret, and that appearance only supports the role he’s playing.
❝ pretty sketchy, right? do you ever wonder if they’re all P A I D A C T O R S ? ❞
A hint of smugness underneath a casual playfulness. He’s hard to read. That’s how he wants to be.

IAN DEAN MOON. That was the name she scraped up after asking around about the boy with the ghostly white hair. She still feels the cold fingertips of a phantom hand tickle her spine when she hears mention of him.
And it’s more than her standard paranoia in action when she feels him STALKING HER.
The average person remembers the CREEPY STRANGER who sneaks past hospital maintenance and security just to “investigate” the traumatized victim who explicitly wants to be left alone. The average person might not notice a investigator as stealthy and careful as him.
Max stopped being the average person when someone decided to sneak into her hometown bedroom every night to leave menacing presents. And her paranoia was only And isn’t she grateful for this alertness? It’s given her the power to pick up on the boy who’s following her from back at the end of the hallway, who’s staring out the window at her when she sneaks out past curfew, who’s coincidentally just taking a stroll through the woods shortly after.
It’s given her incentive to believe every terrifying theory people have about him.
“ …History. ”
Important note: the two have history, not chemistry, as everyone on the line around them is well-aware of when Max’s eyes are looking anywhere sans to the boy who’s directly harassing her for the SECOND TIME. His “self-awareness” does nothing to make this more comfortable. Important note: the two have history. Hers includes dodging and ticking off killers. His includes being a killer. And her research proves he’s a master at getting away with it. Important note: they have history together, and it mostly includes him creeping up on her, invading her personal space, and being very interested in her state in the aftermath of Creeper affairs.
Best case scenario: he’s a red herring suspect. Mid-case scenario: he’s allied with Him. Worst case scenario — and the one she’s always most inclined to jump to:
IAN MOON IS THE CREEPER.
So, does he think she won’t make a scene in front of everyone on the line? He’s in for another rude awakening. She’ll shout. She’ll embarrass him. She’ll let everyone jump to their own conclusions about what she’s talking about. If situation calls for it, she’ll pull a Doe.
“ It is weird, Ian. ”
And impossible, given that she has no notes and spends more of that class focusing on her stalker than she does her teacher— (but he already knows that, doesn’t he?). Max has been too focused on investigating Sid’s leave, catching Ian’s stalking, checking on Grey’s wellbeing from a distance, reciprocating Jimmy’s attention, keeping a close eye on Simon’s graduation, and getting Norie fully up to date on the 11th grade’s gossip. Her grades are plummeting in that class— and that’s intentional. She needs an excuse to stay at Plath. She’s not leaving until she gets closure on Sid Wurm’s departure.
She has too much on her plate to even focus all of her attention on one suspect. But he seems pretty keen to focus his attention on her. That’s fine. Maybe she doesn’t have the coverage to focus on him every time he comes near her, but she’ll make sure he doesn’t go unwatched when he comes near her. She’ll make them look scandalous. There’s nothing high schoolers care more about than a secret. So she plays up the melodrama in front of every vegetarian at the school, channels all of the teen telenovelas the CW and MTV have shoved down their generation’s throats when she cranks the theatrics in her storm out.
“ I’m sorry, but I’m— not ready to look at you, yet. ”
And Max scoots off of the lunch line in all her ostentatious glory, leaving her plate behind a mere two places before getting to the server. And she hopes that every person whose body she has to brush against when she walks back out to the lunchroom will take note of this, the public announcement that something sordid and juicy must have happened between Max Bronte and Ian Moon, and that they’ll tell people, and people will tell people, and maybe some people will notice when they see him following her around, and they’ll watch him to see what happens.
She’ll pay the price of whatever’s left of her dignity to set up this security system.
She makes it sound like they’re quarreling lovers. She keeps touching her hair, making eye contact and then looking away with a pained expression. And this kid is so awkward and inexperienced, he gets sucked right into the moment along wit the crowd of people who don’t know any better.
When her voice skips, and she gets choked up before saying she’s not ready, he spends a bewildered moment wanting to apologize for cheating on her with Becky, promise her that it didn’t mean anything and beg her to rethink the breakup and give him another chance. Then he remembers that there is no Becky, or breakup, or relationship at all. He doesn’t even know if he’s attracted to women. She’s just a convincing actress playing the part of the coveted homecoming queen too well for him not to get sucked into the scene. And he finds this very, very worrying. What other investigations has this talent and wit gotten her out of?
He watches her, speechless, with his mouth just barely agape, and he can’t think of how he should react when he realizes EXACTLY what she’s doing. She’s making a scene. She knows he’s on her trail, and she wants everyone else to know, too. She’s pulling the cloak off of his cloak-and-dagger operation. She wants people to want him to stay away from her. And he doesn’t know how to explain this to anyone without giving himself and his lead away. So he has to play along. For now.
❝ Okay... Um--- call me! I’ll... be here. ... Sorry. ❞
Maxine H. Bronte. You absolutely Machiavellian femme fatale.
Ian stands uncomfortably on the lunch line, which goes tensely silent after Max’s leave, save for Ian tapping his fingers nervously on his lunch tray. If aliens were ever interested in abducting him from planet Earth and taking him far away from the human race forever, now would be a great time. He feels every eye staring into him as he looks down as his own fingers, and he knows he should say something, so he makes the rookie mistake of ACCIDENTAL REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY in front of a group of gossip-hungry high school kids:
❝ That-- that wasn’t what it looked like. It’s not as bad as it looks. ❞
Cue: roughly ten hundred thousand million PlathGossip App posts about Max Bronte and Ian Moon’s dramatic cafeteria breakup today.

There was something about the way the boy beside her looked at Egon Schiele’s work, as if he’s silently RIDICULING it in his head. It made her want to defend the painting, even if it wasn’t hers. “I-it’s Expressionism,“ she muttered, avoiding eye contact though apparently talking to him. “N-not a porno.”

❝ not just because she’s expressing herself. i mean...because of the colors and face, too. really amps up the expression of her being sick & fucked up & abused & stuff. and that... makes it... not porn. yeah? ❞
If this was awkward before Ian started speaking, it only got disastrous when he tried to talk about it. His words didn’t come from a judgmental place, but rather a bewildered one. The picture was a lot for one virgin to take in. Especially one whose only experience with ‘GIRLS in the last four years came in the form of an ever-modestly dressed Gillian Anderson in the X-Files episodes his uncle would have him write papers on for his “homeschooling.”
He cocked his head pensively. He stepped forward with his hands held behind his back. He leaned in to get a closer look. He stepped back to get a farther look. Then he pursed his lips. He was really trying to understand this, but his attempt to respect it probably didn’t come across as earnest, after what he said next:
❝ sooo............................. old white guy paint this? ❞

her question was met with a dumbfounded look, held out for just one second long enough to borderline awkward before he made the connection.

Someone that wouldn’t treat her like she was crazy. “Call who though? I can’t just ask anyone. It’s secret.” She moved her chair closer so she was practically touching the boy. “Who are you?”
The close contact was enough to make him reconsider this. Her skinny knees touched his and sent a ripple of GOOSEBUMPS along his legs, spreading fast across his whole body. His need for answers was enough to make him power through it.

BRONTE, MAXINE H. ✴ That was the name on the hospital door. It’s the name that still makes him flinch whenever he hears it.
The average person remembers the terrifying, deadly, misleadingly dainty cheerleader with the reflexes to jolt awake at the slightest touch to dig a BLADE into his shoulder with wicked aim. But just like the small brunette, Ian is not just the average person. Ian takes "remembering” one step further. He picks up a full flown obsession. He pored over every report, watched every video, and read every Hooper Port High School classmate’s piece he could find on the Bronte v. St. Clair trial.
And then he collected more research, firsthand...
...
Now, saying that Ian CORNERED Max when he finally came up with a plan to talk to her isn’t the way he would put it, but he did notice that she goes on the single-file vegetarian lunchline every day. And he did wait until she walked into the narrow, enclosed aisle before he got on line behind her, closing her in. And he did wait until two more people got on line after him before he started conversation, waited until she would have to squeeze through more people to evacuate, waited until she felt safe that he wasn’t going to say anything to her. (Alright, maybe “cornered” is exactly how you should put it.)
❝ Hey, so’uh... Maxine? Ms. Thorn said that we could work together with people who picked the same DIETY as us for this final project, and I, um, heard we’re doing the same guy. To be honest, I don’t know anything about the OCEAN GOD ;;; I just picked Neptune because it’s my favorite planet in our solar system. But I know you’re great with this stuff, and I guess I just... Wanted to ask if you’d be willing to do some charity work for a kid who only understands math and science? ❞
Ian’s meekness is only BARELY an act to keep her guard down. You have to be careful around this one. Not just because Maxine has shown to be volatile in the past, but because he has good reason to believe...
MAXINE BRONTE IS THE CREEPER.
❝ Sorry. Is this... weird? Is this a weird thing to do? I know we have our.... you know... ❞

.:*・°☆. INTRO TIME. ☾・✧
It’s Nellie ( @shegotbored ) and this is my original bby Ian!
Back and revamped to death. BIG THANKS to my actual senpais @saintjimmys and @maxbronte for helping me come up with his new story and change him from anti-villain to anti-hero~
His story is still crazy, but a lot more realistic than the original LOL.
Single mother walked out on him when he was about 13 and never looked back. (She had her own reasons for abandoning Ian, but he took it really personally, and this whole thing gave him a vendetta against people who “don’t take responsibility” that will eventually lead to his motivations for coming to Plath.)
In his mom’s absence, he was taken under guardianship by the only person in the family with more baggage than Ian’s mother: his crazy conspiracy theorist uncle, Roger.
Roger Moon lived mostly in isolation on the outskirts of a mountain town in Arizona, right on the border of the desert, where he did what he thought was crucial decryption of government files and UFO research, and he definitely thought Ian’s mother was abducted by aliens when she skipped town, and he has his own theories on the identity of Ian’s dad. (spoiler alert: it’s aliens.)
Since Roger didn’t trust the government school system, he pulled Ian out and homeschooled him until he was old enough to “legally” drop out (age 16 in Arizona).
While Ian never completely bought into his uncle’s beliefs, he did take up an interest in more concrete investigative journalism. He would fight 999,999 bees for Edward Snowden and take a bullet for Michael Hastings even though Michael Hastings is already dead. But Roger always said they were doing bigger work than those guys when he would drag Ian along to trespass on restricted government property to take blurry meaningless photographs or make the kid stay up all night with him overanalyzing the random patterns that the wind left in the desert sand trying to decode imaginary alien messages.
In fact, Roger was so sure that they were onto something huge, he was paranoid that government agents were out to get him before he could uncover something. So when random hikers or teenagers would come “too close” to his property (meaning, twenty minutes from where his property line began), Roger would shoot them dead, drag them into his house and tell the cops that they were breaking and entering and he only shot in self-defense. This happened once when Ian was 13 and didn’t realize that his uncle was doing something illegal, once when he was 14 and the event made him too afraid of his uncle to report the incident and he tried to tell himself it wasn’t happening, and one last time when he was 16, and Ian finally worked up the courage to tell the police and get Roger arrested.
Over the course of living with Roger, (and especially after he was 14 and his uncle’s crime sparked his secret interest in people who got away with murder), he did a lot of research on cold cases and found some leaked information and speculation on a suspicious boarding school called PLATH ACADEMY, the monkeyhouse where judges seemed to send troubled kids who they didn’t completely trust but couldn’t get enough evidence to convict as murderers.
When Ian realized that he was going to need a new place to stay after he reported Roger, he decided to kickstart a career in investigative journalism, and decided to go undercover as another unconvicted killer at Plath to infiltrate the network of them, gain their trust and get enough evidence to reopen their cases and finally get the serious criminals on campus sent to prison.
Since his uncle already had membership on a lot of dark web leak sites and conspiracy forums, Ian staged a conspiracy theory against himself, and spread rumors online from an “anonymous” insider source that would frame himself as being a part of his uncle’s murders, and also inflate the story to be more “interesting.” He leaked stories that he and his uncle were both crackpot UFO chasers, kidnapping and interrogating the hikers and planning some sort of ritual to get them abducted by aliens.
Since aliens are just really entertaining, the stories gained a lot of traction online and the mystery and mythos around Ian’s case blew up. Ian would support his own anonymous leaks during his public appearances but never backed up enough evidence to warrant serious government investigation of him. (I’ll go more into how he did this later on in character development questions and headcanon posts.)
So BASICALLY the general public would believe that he and his uncle were up to some SERIOUS LUNATIC SHIT but that Ian managed to get off the hook because there wasn’t enough evidence to try him, making him another murderer at Plath Academy. In reality he’s just a boy who’s about to get in way over his head and doesn’t realize what he’s getting into.
THAT WAS LONG SO REALLY HERE’S ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT HIM AT PLATH:
BIOGRAPHY TL;DR: he was raised in isolation with a government-hating uncle for the last 4 years; his uncle used to shoot and kill anyone who came too close to his property because he was paranoid that they were agents coming to steal his research; he got away with killing people by dragging their bodies onto his property and saying they were trespassing; Ian had Ian snitched and got his uncle arrested; Ian requested to be sent to Plath to infiltrate the network of murderers on the campus and expose people who faked insanity plea or got off the hook on serious crimes when they should have been sent to jail and not to boarding school; Ian used his uncle’s access to the dark net and conspiracy websites to make a viral story that made the public believe that he and his uncle were in cohoots in murdering the trespassers and that it was all a part of some bigger, suspicious plan involving aliens. The mystery and hints of alien/UFO-themed “sacrifices” made the story more sensational and garnered a big following online, but Ian never faked enough concrete evidence to garner a serious government investigation in any way. IN SHORTEST SHORT, your characters would probably know Ian as the kid who helped commit mysterious murders in the name of aliens and got away with it. Not because that’s true but because that’s how he meticulously staged it to look like so he would have Serial Killer Mastermind Cred when he came to Plath.
I know I dropped him but instead of saying he left and came back with two weeks left in the year let’s just say... he’s been at the school since February and mostly keeps a low profile, and has only been quietly observing so far. (This leaves room for anyone who wants to plot out already knowing or having a relationship with Ian! I’m gonna say he is familiar with most characters through observing them but it’s up to you if your characters have noticed him too.)
There are definitely RUMORS about him being involved in the interrogations and murders of the trespassers in the desert and it’s very possible that your character has heard about him getting away with it the same way they hear that actual criminals at the school got away with murder on the insanity plea.
While Ian is a very bitter and angry boy, the person he presents as at Plath is NOT. He acts quiet and a little quirky, and very anti-establishment (like the way I used to play him, but a little more sane). He seems like he would be an agreeable, reliable partner in crime for any murderers who want to network with him. He seems a little off, but people who don’t know about his undercover work would probably chalk up his suspiciousness to him being homeschooled and awkward.
All threads I did before dropping him are still canon!! The only one I put any narration with was in the hospital one with Max, and while his thoughts behind what was happening would be slightly different, it’s still in character for him to sneak into her room to investigate her. And the stabbing plot is too good to drop. He still has a scar on his shoulder from her jamming the scalpel into him.
Fin! Hit me up for plots bbies!!! owo

Henry walked right up to the person’s table and set her tray and purse down, before planting her bottom on the bench. Brushing hair over her shoulder, she offered them a pleasant smile and leaned in. “So, I’m sick of sitting alone and barely knowing anybody here – I saw you were alone, and thought maybe you wouldn’t mind some company?”
Ian was sitting alone to go over his notes on the Jules Grant case in private. They were inconspicuous enough to take them out in public, with figures, victims and locations names changed, but he didn’t need anyone sitting close enough to read over his shoulder and figure out exactly what he was studying.
He should have told her to go, but he couldn’t deny that he really wouldn’t mind the company every once in a while, so he closed his notebook and slid the data into the backpack on his lap to give his new friend his full attention.
