Final reflection on my first year as an IBM student
My first full year in higher education. A year that probably everyone will remember. It was a journey of getting to know myself a little better and observing what I enjoy doing.
After the first semester, I found my drive and way of working. I found a balance in going to classes, studying, and doing activities outside of school.
During the second semester, this became a little harder. I focused more on work instead of school, and managing my attendance in class was a lot harder than expected. I feel that the classes this semester were way more boring than last semester, which played a big role in my motivation. Nevertheless, I did pick up my rhythm again and started going to class more again.
I became a little less disciplined overall, daily habits like reading lacked a bit. But, reflecting on it when noticing, I took the pace back up and started working self-discipline again.
I am now back on track, and this year has been special for me. I have learned more about myself and about the things I value in life. It was a very knowledgeable year and I feel it is only the beginning.
I will one day be where I want to be.
The main thing I will take with me from this year is to work more on my balance. Not only planning my work but also for university. I have noticed that the more I plan and stick to a healthy habit, the better my mood and workflow are. Way less stress and obstacles are faced.
I am grateful for everything I have experienced this year and will keep on working to become the ultimate version of myself.
See you next year!

Mentorship project
Final Reflection: It was interesting to meet students who had already passed our current trajectory in the IBM program. Learning from there about tips and tricks also came in handy. I hope to have the same experience next year, when it will be my job to be a mentor.

My Global mind
Activity one: Watch or read the news of another country for a period and check how the same events appear in the Belgian news. Do you see any differences? You can discuss e.g. how an important world event is depicted in different countries.
I have watched the news on CNN for three days. CNN is an independent news channel in the United States.
The first thing I noticed was that CNN is a very subjective news channel. It seems like each news channel in the US has its own opinions on events that occur. They are so different from one another because it is all based on opinions. An example of this would be the controversy of a draft opinion that would overturn the abortion law in the whole of the US. The news anchors at CNN were very clearly contra this draft, they talked about how it would destroy lives, create riots and place women back in a place of no power.
In Belgium, news anchors also discuss the pros and cons of such a law, but there is a clear difference between the tone and objectivity. When looking at the Belgian news, the anchors invited a professional to talk about the draft and listened to him before giving any opinions. It seems that in Belgium we first want to have an objective view before dropping in the subjectivity. On the contrary, in the US they start to debate with each other without a real structure or sense of communication. It is like one big boxing match. In the US, they also like to show only one side of the supporter, while in Belgium they interview both sides of the draft.
Something that became very clear to me is that in the US you need to be very selective and careful about the news channel you decide to watch and believe.
Another thing I noticed is how unprofessional the anchors and guests are on national television.
In Belgium, you have to set an appearance when you are on TV, you want to remain polite and have a good attitude. Everybody also receives an opportunity to talk, and every opinion gets respected even if the other person does not agree. It looks more like a normal conversation. However, in the US, it is the other way around. It is just a heated debate with cursing even being involved. In Belgium, this would be very shameful, and you would get a spot in the newspaper.
Finally, what I noticed was how crazy the headlines were. If you thought the headlines in Belgium were clickbait, then you haven't seen anything yet. An example of this is ‘Stunning on so many levels’: CNN legal analyst breaks down draft opinion obtained by Politico.
Comparing both countries and news channels, I would say I would rather look at a channel that meets in the middle. The US channels were over the top, but not as boring as the Belgian ones. I do think being honest and debating is important, but not behaving like a child and screaming all the time. Overall, it was fun to compare both countries.
Visit a city you have never been to in the ‘discovery’ mode: draw up a travel report. Ensure you also talk to people who are not locals and non- Belgians.
My trip to Lisbon (Portugal)

Lisbon was a beautiful city to visit, it is amazing how rich the city is in culture. The mindset of the citizens is so different compared to Belgium. They seem to have more freedom, even though they have the same restrictions as Belgians. I took the time to enrich my knowledge about their culture because it always has been a big interest of mine to learn more about different cultures. Talking to strangers and listening to their beliefs and views of their meaning of life is always interesting. Most of the time, family and health were primarily their most important factors in life. They believe you don't need to be rich or successful in life, but to live a "good life". For them, this means being a good person by treating everybody with respect and kindness. While also being able to wake up and do what you love doing, if this isn't the case you should work until you are able to do something that makes you enjoy life a little better. In general, it just has to be something simple and enjoyable.
Walking in the streets of Lisbon truly brought me peace, while everybody seemed to be happy and the weather was really nice most of the time. I can't imagine feeling unhappy when you are able to see the sun going down over the horizon, reflecting on the water, and closing the day with friends at the peer.

Reflection about your first semester as an IBM student
The first semester was a bit like feeling the water for me, I did not know what to expect. Last year, I was still studying physiotherapy at UGent, which is something totally different. I was so used to getting a lot of theory and almost no practical courses, I find practical courses way more interesting because you are literally putting your knowledge to the test. This was something I really missed at university, and it felt like learning stuff I will forget anyway, just like “pouring water into the sea”.
After a semester of following the IBM program, I can honestly say that I feel confident about my current path. The classes are interesting, but mostly the way knowledge and material is passed to us is way more exciting than at university. In the beginning, I still needed to adapt to the new schooling system, but after a few weeks, I was armed and ready.
I think the exams will go well because I know what is expected from me and I know how to deliver the results. I look forward to the next semester, continuing my course in IBM.

BARS based self assessment
Assessment for: Florian Claes | Team Name: 4 | Set: 1IBM 03
Rating Scale
1 3 5
BARS 1: Communication Behaviours
5/5
Criteria: Team member is engaged, ready to participate, and communicate effectively including oral communication, written communication, and listening.
Comments: I meet the expectations. I make sure everybody knows what’s expected from me, and I immediately try to solve misunderstandings. I make sure things get done and set deadlines.
Observed Behaviours:
When working for the manager’s interview, I communicated with the managers and made sure everything was planned out. When managers cancelled, I immediately took action and found a replacement manager. I see only solutions, not problems.
For the classroom presentation, we had to adapt very quickly to an online presentation, my team and I reacted and adapted as fast/best as we could.
Impact on my team:
I am sure I had a positive impact on the group because things got done and everybody was happy about it. I talked to every group member separately to check if they had anything worrying them.
I was open-minded and open to feedback, often one of my group members had a great idea and I would listen. I also learned from this.
Recommendations : I would say trying to get everyone more engaged in giving their opinions & ideas. I like to move fast and make quick decisions and adapt along the way, I should check more if everybody is comfortable with it. Also, trust other group members to do specific tasks.
BARS 2: Quality of Work
3/5
Criteria: The deadlines are reached, and the work is done professionally. Tasks were taken seriously.
Comments: I meet expectations except for a few times I am guilty of a few hours late with deadlines. Doing my best for tasks and trying to get them perfect makes me lose more time on it than expected.
Observed Behaviours:
Writing the bio for the manager was overdue. Partly because we had to find a new “plan C” manager but also because I wanted to have a nice firm bio, this is also a reason that it took a little longer.
The rest of my parts were on time.
Impact:
The team was always happy with the work, only a few comments were made, and I made sure to adapt them instantly.
The bio that took a little longer had a minor negative effect because it gave a bit of stress to the other team members.
Recommendations:
It doesn’t always have to be perfect, it is better to get things done on time and adapt and learn along the way.
How hard deadlines can be, they have to be respected.
BARS 3: Collaboration with the team members (teamwork).
5/5
Criteria: You are open-minded enough and wish to listen to what everybody has to say. You help others when they need a hand to complete a task, or when they are confused. You don’t argue over unnecessary things.
Comments: I meet expectations, while I always ask what people think of my perspective. I help whenever I can and make time free for meetings to solve the confusion.
Observed Behaviours:
If needed, I did 1 on 1 meetings with group members to explain something and help them to complete their tasks. Also, to get rid of the confusion about roles and tasks.
As mentioned above, I do like to take decisions fast and sometimes it happens that I forget to ask the opinion of all the group members. Sometimes I just want it to get over with and not bust around the bush. I do notice that not everybody is always at ease with it.
Impact:
Positive impact: Group members know they are never alone and get help whenever they need it.
Negative impact: Not everybody is always agreeing with the way things are done, and sometimes they feel like their way/opinion doesn’t matter because of it.
Recommendations: Always make sure to listen to what everybody has to say, your way is not always the right/the best way. Take the risk to trust somebody else’s way of doing it and If it fails you can always adapt along the way. No hard feelings.

A brief report on what I have learnt by participating in a (mock) test for one of your courses. (module 7)
Regarding the first ICS test:
I actually did not quite know what to expect, I had no clue of how the tutor was going to formulate her questions and the difficulty to expect.
The way I approached it, I made a summary of all the material that was expected to learn. Besides that, I marked the material that I expected to be asked on the test.
I did well on the test, honestly, it wasn't the hardest test. In my opinion, the questions were really unclear and confusing. Most importantly, I had an idea of what was expected for the next test and I performed well on that one as well.

My exam planning!
Planning tool
I am already using my iCloud/Apple (phone & laptop) agenda for my planning; I manage it really well. I have an overview of all my future classes and work hours. Furthermore, I like to have an agenda instead of deciding everything last minute while you can get way more stuff done.
There aren’t really any cons for me. Maybe only when something takes longer, the planning will change or be interrupted.

My A and B objectives!
My biggest goal is to own a successful business. After the IBM program, I will have improved my skills, but I believe business knowledge is obtained by trying and failing a lot. You learn more from failure than from anything else; failure is the best teacher. Knowledge is great, but without action it’s useless.
My sub-targets would be to grow my personal network and learn more about the numbers & strategies in business. Finding a good mentor that will not necessarily help me but more likely guide me to stay on the right path.
Growing out my socials would also be a sub-target, while this will make it easier to grow a business while networking and connecting with the right people can help you reach your goals much easier.

My job ad!
This job fits me as a person and IBM student because it can be done all over the world, meaning that I have location freedom and will work with people from different countries/cultures. During the IBM program, I was put to the test working with people from different cultures, so different norms and beliefs. I can say that my intercultural awareness has improved and grown during this course. Besides that, public speaking and managing a team is something I personally wanted to get better at. Those are also some of the things I seek to improve during the IBM program. This job would be a perfect challenge for me.
