So, I think about Yelena Belova a lot.
Like, a lot a lot.
And over the last week or so I was thinking about her fight scene with Kate. And something seemed off to me.
And then I realised it was one simple statement.
This. The "That really hurts!" with the shaking the hand in pain and actual pained expression.
She's a Black Widow. If she didn't want anyone to know she was hurt, they wouldn't know. She easily could've hidden that. I recon she would have with anyone but Kate or Natasha.
Either, she was trying to make Kate feel good about her fighting abilities, using it as a distraction, or she felt comfortable enough with Kate to express pain.
Obviously we see Yelena is a lot more open than Natasha the entire time we know her. From the moment she breaks free of the mind control, Yelena has shown more on her face than Natasha (in terms of extremities). Natasha always hid behind a mask, and we only saw that properly drop when she was alone. Yelena however showed more, more often.
I think some of their trauma can link to that. Natasha was psychologically conditioned for the control they had over her. That's why it was easier for her to get out. Yelena had her brain functions chemically controlled by a monster. Her psyche wasn't actually hers until she was freed. Natasha didn't show anyone anything. And think about it, she knew Steve for what, eleven plus years before he saw her cry, Tony never did and they'd known each other even longer (admittedly no where near as close). It's likely the only person that had seen her cry since Ohio/the human trafficking was Clint.
I'm not sure where this post was going but it was a sudden realisation at like 11:50pm and I don't have the brain power to follow through with the thought. But basically, I find it very weird that Yelena so casually admitted to being in pain to someone she barely knew.

Tony: How’s your homework going?
Peter: I got marked down an entire letter grade because I told my teacher that in October the mitochondria turned into the frightochondria and became the haunted house of the cell

HOT TAKE BUT in black widow, Yelena’s “you… you were my everything” should have been said to Natasha, not Alexei
