More than 1,000 people staged a silent protest in London’s Parliament Square on Saturday, holding cardboard signs reading “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action” to demand the government lift its terrorism ban on the activist group.

The hour-long sit-in, organised by Defend Our Juries as part of its “Lift the Ban” campaign, drew far larger numbers than police had anticipated. The Metropolitan Police, who had warned participants all week they risked arrest, said they expected the turnout to be in the low hundreds.

By the end of the demonstration at 2 p.m., officers had arrested about 50 people. That figure rose to 150 by 3 p.m. and 200 by 3:40 p.m., according to police.

Authorities said the arrests were for showing support for Palestine Action, proscribed under the Terrorism Act 2000. “We have significant resources deployed to this operation,” the Met said on social media. “It will take time but we will arrest anyone expressing support for Palestine Action.”
