So we’re definitely moving, and I’m definitely trying to raise money accordingly. My family has decided that helping is a non-option, and also that I shouldn’t be allowed money if I can’t spend it to their liking. (Ah, if only it were that simple.)

Wanted to let everyone who still follows me know that I do totally intend to return to this account, just... right now, anxiety is winning, and the longer I haven't been on it, the more I feel like I can't.

I made a new blog that's basically just me doing doll shit, mainly because I haven't done like any art or writing or crafts in 500 years. My feed on this blog just got too fast (I'm following ~560 blogs right now) and I didn't want to delete any that turned out to be people I knew. orz

This is probably going to go into some potentially un-PC territory, and I'm sorry in advance. I'll try to tread lightly.

I'm not trans*, but my brother is, and I've got one character who presents as trans*, but who hasn't been shelled into a doll yet. Boss is complicated and presents and identifies publicly according to outdated terminology and isn't in a time/place to reconsider those things, and isn't the type of character who adjusts his behavior unless it suits him above anyone else's comfort level. (For reference, I mostly use 'him' pronouns-wise with him, even though he predominantly presents as female, because where he is in-story, it's more advantageous for other people to parse him as male/dominant/in power, and the English language is tricky, and he hasn't figured out or acknowledged neutral pronouns yet. Boss is strange and potentially offensive, so I usually play him in closed circles.) 

I don't think trans* characters are inherently offensive, but I do think they're tricky to pull off in the doll world--I rarely see people whose characters don't pass, or whose narratives involve struggling with surgical/hormonal transition; the dolls I've seen are mostly pre-op, pre-hormones, and are in the "my body and my identity don't align, and it gives me angst, but I haven't taken steps to do anything to rectify it" stage. I've never encountered someone whose doll had a trans* narrative, but was post-op and passing, or post-op and not passing. They're alway pre-op. (...And always MtF, if I find them at all.)

With dolls you functionally have three choices; buy your doll's birth-sex-assigned-body, buy your doll's post-op body, or mod one or the other to represent the middle ground. You can dress your doll however you'd like, regardless of the body you buy it, and most people won't have a clue unless it becomes a plot point or you bring it up in discussion. People constantly get dolls' genders wrong at a glance, because unless your doll's got genitalia showing, the odds of guessing based on sculpt/faceup/wig/clothes aren't actually that great. 

That said, though, it's really easy for people to misrepresent groups they don't have extensive personal experience with--the issue of gender is a big minefield; there are a lot of people who will insist that their experience is the only valid one, and that any other interpretation is "wrong", and that makes writing non-binary characters really complex and difficult. Where Boss doesn't offend my brother (no doubt in part because he's helped me tweak and develop him over the years), I know other people who absolutely would find him offensive, because he (as a character) isn't always a "positive" representation, and he certainly isn't progressively-minded. (My primary defense for this is that he was born in the 60s or 70s and is kind of a shithead to begin with.)

tl;dr OP, I'm sorry you're offended--gender is a complicated, messy subject, just like sexuality or religion can be--but I disagree that people exploring those concepts is offensive by default. :<

As a trans* person, trans* doll characters offend me. The issue of gender is not your plaything. Stop treating it like a trend/fetish.

While I definitely agree that Volks should open up another store in the US, the Torrance store was kind of unfortunately located, wasn't close to any kind of easy public transport, wasn't near a center for hobbyists or fans of things from Asia, and the hours were pretty bad. Their foot traffic was minor enough that they only maintained showroom hours two days a week year round, and it'd been that way since at least 2007--they were already staying open based mostly on online sales. I'm surprised they didn't relocate to either Little Tokyo in LA (where some of the secondhand shops do sometimes get BJDs!) or come up to San Francisco's Japan Town, where they could at least get a lot of tourist activity (though they'd have to be open more than twice a week to make it worth it, I'm sure).

I hope they'll open another location, but I know that doll-related vendors for them have also had to close in the past year or so. Kerbey Lane Doll Shoppe folded up last June, and they sold a lot of Volks things in Texas. 

Volks just needs to open up another store in the US, not close their only official showroom! And discontinuing their standard models? Volks needs to do more for their US fans, not close the only place that they can go for a full showroom experience.

If it helps, anon, most of the vehemently anti-recast people I've come across are fairly chill about it in person. It's a lot easier to be angry and use capslock on the Internet, but for face-to-face interactions, they mostly just nope off to another part of the meet rather than start something that could potentially ruin other people's days. (To say nothing of the fact that it's stupid and illegal to destroy someone else's property, especially somewhere with witnesses--I think, for the most part, people who talk about wanting to do that online wouldn't do it in person.)

One of the meet up groups I was a part of ended up splitting up because of recast debate (one of the girls who hosted the meets at her house was anti-recast and did business on DoA, and some of the pro-recast members were upset that she wanted their dolls separated for photos since we all posted pictures regularly on DoA; they felt singled out, it turned into a huge big thing, factions formed, and the group split down the middle based on who had more friends on each side, and it was a big mess)--but the conflict was largely handled via PM on Facebook and nobody's dolls were hurt in the process. Some members from both "sides" turn up at other meets and generally just steer clear of each other. 

I think with most of the other concerns in this post--how will I know they're not talking behind my back, how will I know they're not submitting confessions about me, how will I know they're not sending anons--that's the kind of thing that's a "risk" with anyone in the hobby, recast or otherwise. There will always be people who're two-faced, and if it's not over recasts, it's over face ups or clothes or wigs or company choice. But being in one camp over another doesn't make individuals more or less likely to do that kind of thing--it's really just luck of the draw there. 

(Also with regards to meet ups, a lot of groups have rules in place, and it's easy to get a feel for what you're walking into most of the time before actually going to a meet--if the meet is arranged via Den of Angels, DoA rules usually apply; if the meet is arranged on Facebook, most of those groups have rules listed somewhere, and if not, the person hosting the meet can usually make a definitive ruling. Some meets invite and welcome off topic dolls, and some groups sometimes hold meets where their usual rules don't apply.)

Anti-recast people go on and on about how they can’t trust recast owners or people who are pro-recast, but for me as silly as this may sound to most, I can’t trust anyone whose anti-recast until I’ve gotten to know them first. I know that there are people who against recasts are civil and well mannered people, but how can I know about the others? How can I know that if I say I have a recast in the bjd tag that someone will send me anon hate? How will I know they talk crap about me on a confession blog because I have a recast? How will I know if I ever meet someone who is against recasts in person or at a doll meet and say I have a recast that person will verbally abuse me or try and physically harm me or break my doll? It’s already hard enough for me to want to want to say I have a recast to people with confidence, but then later second guess when I see some of the hateful anti recast confessions or someone making a post how they hate recast owners and calling them selfish, self entitled thieves that don’t belong in the hobby. It doesn’t reflect well on the anti recast community if there are people willing to break someone’s reacted dolls, separate the hobby, harm, harass or bully people who have recasts. Sure, there some not so nice pro-recast people who overreact and play the victim, but I trust them more and at least they don’t make threats and insult others just because they have recast…..

10/10 Amarantines for getting it down pact, but. Just. What. Even if he had mixed lineage to account for the platinum blonde hair, a) he's brown and we've seen his naked baby butt to prove it, b) everyone in his family is brown, c) HIS ANCESTORS ARE CANONICALLY BROWN??

Malik is a brown person visiting another country, minus the last like four episodes of the show and flashbacks. He's a POC. Everyone in the show is arguably intended to be a POC other than Pegasus and Rebecca, because they're all Asian, but Malik (and his family) is distinctly darker in complexion than the rest of the cast. And comes from another country. Populated by people who are not white. 

I think the anon is trolling but holy shit is this even a thing, is this real life.
