Words to replace said, except this actually helps
I got pretty fed up with looking for words to replace said because they weren’t sorted in a way I could easily use/find them for the right time. So I did some myself.

Chapter 1 rough draft
For any of you who care here's a rough idea of what I want the first chapter to be. It's changed a bunch since this draft but I figured I have to start from somewhere! Please excuse my errors and how awful this narrative is! I'm not great at this! Barbarus snickered to himself as the dull sound of a wagon echoed across the canyon walls. It seemed another desperate traveler must have decided to take a shortcut. He must have something valuable. "Something doesn't feel right" whispered Haagen The crisp twilight air seemed to stand still. The only sound in the valley was the sound of their small cart and their footsteps. Gourn looked up from his guard position on the back of the cart. The valley was like any other valley he'd been through. The sheer cliff walls on either side of them protected them from any close attacks but left them completely open to anyone throwing something from the top. A forest of trees stretched out in front of them with a path cut through the center as far as they could see. It was pretty but not very safe for a caravan. Why did that fool have to "save time"? "Why is it so quiet" shivered the hired guard pulling his coat closer around his body. "...should we ...stop?" Questioned Haagen "I definitely don't want to keep going through the night" Gourn replied. "We make up enough time with this shortcut anyways" justified Haagen "I'll get the bedding out you start a fire" huffed the guard. Haagen struck the flint with a stone sending sparks cascading over the wood. A small ember lit. The twigs began to glow a soft orange then faded to grey. Haagen cursed under his breath. "Again?" He whispered "Still no fire" stated the escort "This should be lighting!" exclaimed Haagen "Guess it's going to be a cold night" sighed the escort The moon crested the canyon walls casting a pale light over the camp. A soft scrape echoed as Haagen struck the flint again spraying orange sparks over the wood. The twigs began to glow then quickly began to grow. "It lit!" He yelled excitedly "Took long enough!" Replied the guard They slowly added more wood and had a roaring fire going. They pulled rocks close so they could sit. "Have you ever come through this way before?" Asked the guard staring into the fire "Only during the day..." Said Haagen "Was it ever this quiet?" "Never" The soft sound of footsteps could be heard "Hello?" Shouted Haagen "May I... Join you by the fire?" Echoed the reply Haagen and the guard looked to each other "Take your place" invited the guard The footsteps came closer until a man in a long black cloak stepped into the light of the fire. He pulled a rock near and sat. "Allow me to introduce myself, I'm The Death Merchant" said the man pulling back his hood smiling Haagen gulped "D-death... Merchant?" Stammered the guard "Yes... And you are?" Said The Death Merchant cocking his head "H-Haagen" "Gourn" "I'm not here to kill you if that's what your thinking" laughed The Death Merchant Gourn and Haagen let out the breath they didn't realize they were holding. "If I wanted you dead... You already would." Said Death flatly The pair looked at each other wide eyed. "What do you... Want?" Asked Haagen "I'm actually here to protect you" The Death Merchant smiled again A wolfs howl slammed through the canyon. "From what" whispered gourn "The shadow" They looked around trying to see into the darkness "What does the shadow look like?" Said Gourn "A man... Who's a shadow" smiled The Death Merchant "But we're safe so long as your here right?" Asked Haagen "Oh heavens no! I'm just here to make sure you know to keep the fire going. I have to give you a fighting chance! ...But I would keep an eye on that black sand in yo-" a jet black wolf barreled past them and lept into their cart. "Oh my!" Laughed the Death Merchant The wolf darted past them with a large burlap bag in its mouth. "What was that!?" Said Gourn standing with his hand on his sword "A shadow wolf... So much for protecting the sand... Well good luck!" Said The Death Merchant standing and walking away Haagen gulped. "This is going to be a long night isn't it" whispered Gourn wielding his sword. "Oh you can bet it will be!" Laughed The Merchant over his shoulder as he fell from view "What do we do?" Trembled Haagen "Make sure you keep that fire going" replied Gourn firmly Haagen nodded then turned towards the woods. "Use the cart" cut Gourn "Do you have any idea how expensive that cart is!?" Replied Haagen stopping "Whatever is out there is going to kill you the moment you step outside the circle of light" warned Gourn "I can always get a new cart..." Gulped Haagen "Smart man!" Laughed a new voice Gourn and Haagen looked to each other wide eyed. "I'm sick of meeting new people tonight." Grumbled Gourn "Oh I'm really not that bad" said the voice cheerfully "Why don't I believe you" smiled Gourn brandishing his sword. Haagen pulled his bow from the wagon and quickly strung it. Pairs of red eyes opened on just the edge of the fire. A low growling filled the air. As their eyes adjusted they saw a figure standing over a pack of wolves with his arm raised and his hand open. "Kill" smiled the figure closing his hand. The wolves kicked up a cloud of dirt as they began sprinting around the camp. "What are they doing?" Trembled Haagen "I don't know. But stand with the fire to your back opposite of me. Get ready to kill something." Replied Gourn A lone shadow wolf broke from the pack and tore towards Gourn. It jumped aiming for Gourn's throat. Gourn turned and swung at the wolf. His blade passed through the wolf like thin air throwing him off balance. The wolfs teeth clasped around Gourn's arm earning a scream. Haagen looked back and fired his bow at the shadow wolf. The arrow ignited then plunged itself into the side of the wolf. The shadow let go and staggered off whimpering. "So that's how we do it." Smiled Gourn raising his sword with his good hand. Gourn placed his sword into he flame. "you can only hit them with fire" observed a bewildered Haagen. Gourn removed his sword from the fire. The tip glowed red and orange from the heat. "If we get out of this alive you owe me three times what I signed for" grumbled Gourn "Can we talk about this later" sighed Haagen They were smarter than most. Although The Death Merchant did help them a ton. Stupid immortal. Breaking wood echoed through the canyon as Haagen pulled a long board from the wagon and threw it into the fire. "Do we have some oil?" Said Gourn thrusting his sword through another shadow wolf. "A little from what we sold at the last stoping place... Why?" Responded Haagen getting more wood. "Get a longer piece of wood and some cloth and make me a torch" commanded Gourn Haagen nodded and got to work. The sound of wolves running slowed then stopped. Haagen stopped what he was doing then backed closer to Gourn. "What's happening?" Wondered Gourn "I don't know..." Trembled Haagen "Make that torch...now." Whispered Gourn Haagen ran to the cart and quickly finished putting together the makeshift torch then ran back to Gourn. "This should last for several hours, it's good oil." "We're going to need every second we can get... Light it for me." Haagen touched the torch to the fire. The cloth ignited casting a brighter light around them. "If I'm not back by sunrise I want you to get someplace safe" said Gourn taking he torch "Your... Leaving?" Whispered Haagen tears of fear coming to his eyes "It's touching really. That you would sacrifice yourself to save this poor merchant! How much is he paying you? I'm sure it must be a lot!" They both turned towards he voice quickly. On he other side of the fire stood a male figure in a tattered cloak. His left arm was a mess of metal shards his face was covered in bandages and except for a small area around his eyes. His skin was a shadowy substance that wasn't quite solid. In his outstretched right hand he held a handful of back sand. "You really don't know what you've gotten yourselves into tonight" smiled the shadow The shadow let the sand fall into the fire. The fire sputtered for a moment then slowly changed colors. The deep red and oranges of the fire changed to a blue and black. Gourn looked around noticing their shadows started pointing towards the fire. "ShadowFire" stated Haagen. The circle of fire began to grow darker and darker until it was too dark to see anything by the fire. Gourn slowly inched backwards. Growling picked up behind them. Looking back the wolf pack was cutting off the way they came from. "So this is how it is." Stated Gourn "We're going to die aren't we?" Breathed Haagen "Yeah... Probably." Frowned Gourn The shadow stepped towards them holding a branch lit with ShadowFire. The metal shards of his arm pulled together and formed the shape of a sword. Haagen smiled and clasped shut the bottle of oil at his belt. "Do you really thing we wouldn't have a back up plan for all of this?" Laughed the merchant confidence return to his face. The shadow paused. The. Realization came to its eyes. "You knew what was in that bag the entire time" stated the demon shocked. "Why do you think I was selling it?" Smiled Haagen Gourn lowered the torch to the ground near Haagen. The oil ignited then slowly followed the trail to the center of the ShadowFire. A loud explosion rang throwing the pair to there knees. They quickly scrambled to their feet and broke into a sprint. Haagen ripped open his shirt revealing the flasks he collected while gathering wood from the wagon. "Light this" bellowed Haagen tossing a flask to Gourn. Gourn touched the flask to the torch the dropped it. "How far till the end of the valley" huffed Gourn "Ten miles" "I hate you" Another explosion echoed through the valley. Then screaming. "You think that's going to slow him much?" Said Haagen tossing a couple more flasks to Gourn "Not unless we get a lot more fire involved" smiled Gourn. Loud hissing shot from

Barbarus: a man turned into a shadow. Light and fire make him vulnerable. His left arm has shards of metal he can manipulate that he prefers to extend into a sword from his wrist. For most of the story he terrorizes travelers passing through his valley. He understands he’s extremely powerful so he has a carefree attitude, somewhat violent and has a sick sense of humor. When he’s serous you can tell everyone in a 5 mile radius is going to die.
