NOTE-TAKING TIPS!

heyyy!! heres a quick post explaining some of my fav note-taking methods and some tips that i find useful. these are for taking notes from a textbook :^ ). lets get started!!

where to start -

my textbook chapters are subdivided into three or four parts so i mark in the margin which subchapter i��m at. this helps alot when i look back on my notes and want to find a specific subchapter/topic. i usually write it in highlighter so its even more noticeable. plus idk it looks kind of cute hehe.

then i use the subchapter title provided by my textbook and write that usually in big blue ink. i always just use the textbook titles when making my notes.

advice -

draw diagrams, draw diagrams, draw diagrams!!! i know sometimes i feel super lazy when i make my notes and don’t want to draw some diagrams but i force myself to!! its so worth it omg. idk i can really remember the material better once its visualized. with my teachers i get bonus marks for including diagrams so thats a plus!

write important notes in the margin! if i really want to remember a certain point i note it down in the margin so it really stands out. i can remember these points much much better and when looking at my notes my eyes go straight to the points.

use a different colour for vocabulary. idk if this is obvious this is just what i do. i pick a different colour for vocabulary and this helps me remember the definitions a lot better. 

don’t use too many supplies. i’ve tried to colour code my notes with 6 or 7 different colours and omg it takes way way too long. i usually use one black pen, one blue pen, a highlighter, and a coloured fineliner. this way i don’t have to cap and uncap pens over and over again which actually wastes a lot of time hehe.

spice your notes up! sometimes to motivate myself to start making notes i search tumblr for some of those cute banner idea posts. i use these in my notes because i find them kinda fun to draw?? im lame sry.

it happens. sometimes tasks can be prioritized incorrectly, sometimes you simply just run out of time or don’t understand the content. but if you don’t manage to get your homework done, here’s some things you could do!

wake up early & get it done before school

set your alarm an hour earlier than usual and try your best to wake up. if you know that waking up in the morning is hard for you, set more than one alarm. once you get out of bed, make something to drink or eat and go straight to your desk. if it’s cold, wrap a blanket around yourself - make sure you’re comfortable!! get the homework done and put it in your bag so you don’t forget it 🌞

alternatively: get to school early

get your parents to drive you, walk or catch an earlier bus. most schools will have the library or a common room open in the morning for students to study in. you’ll probably find that you aren’t the only one who hasn’t had a chance to do their homework.

do it during your lunch break

if your class isn’t the first one in your day, then try to get some alone time during your lunch breaks. head to the common room, the library, an empty class room (if you’re allowed), or even outside if it’s not too windy, and get the homework finished. your friends will probably distract you, so let them know that it’s important for you work done - they’ll understand. make sure you eat your lunch!! food is fuel for your body 🍎

ask a friend for some help

don’t push - just ask them nicely if they could help you out with a question or two. this especially works if you didn’t do your homework because you didn’t understand it. in my experience, other students will help you!! everyone’s going through the same thing. maybe one day when roles are reversed you’ll be able to return the favour (plus, teaching someone else content that you already know helps to reinforce your own knowledge) 🤝

as a last resort: email your teacher 

teachers understand that you take more than just their class. if you’re going to email them, do it the night before or as soon as you know that you won’t be able to get it done. try not to email them half an hour before the class; it’s polite to give them some notice. keep your email brief and to the point - they don’t need to know the ins and outs of your life - but also be respectful because after all, your teachers are people too (and they’re the people that mark your tests) ✉️

Hi everyone!!

My name is Nia, and even though I’ve tried out having a studyblr before, I was finding it was more hindering than helping, so I deleted my last blog (new year new me thing I guess). 

I’m a Sophomore at Portland Community College in Portland, OR. Art History major and Anthropology is my minor, hopefully I’ll be transferring to uni next year! I’m in the beginning process of teaching myself German, too. I also work part time at a make up store.

I’m an INFP, sorted into Ravenclaw and Thunderbird houses, I adore coffee and tea. I really love books but I haven’t read anything new recently, my favorite book is A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. I’m also genderfluid (they/them pronouns please!)

092216 – super late posting last week’s spread because i am still mad busy! the show i’m working on opens next weekend and a whole lot of hw/paper deadlines came up all at once. i finally had the chance to finish ancillary sword, though! a solid sequel. hopefully i’ll have time to read the last book soon.
