thinking about alice growing up not knowing a time when her grandmother wasn’t half obsessing over ancient superstitions and curses, demons and witchcraft, and thinking it a horrible tragedy when she died decades before she should have. thinking about the moment alice first realized her mom isn’t the infallible and ethereal presence she puts on onstage, and having to watch as she slowly succumbs to the same madness that gripped her own mother before meeting a same grisly fate. i don’t doubt for a second that alice fully expected to die young too, because even if she convinced herself the curse wasn’t real, part of her knew there was something in their blood. something that would take her the same way it took her mom and her grandmother and every woman ancestor before her. something violent and hungry and waiting.

so when the years stretched on and her twenties became her thirties, thirties became forties, she grew restless. aimless. uncertain of her place in the world and waiting still for the brutal end that’s been promised, lurking in the background her entire life. the year she officially became older than her mother ever got to be was the worst time for her, mentally. it’s the year she decided to withdraw from the police force, not trusting herself or her mind even if it was the one thing she thought she could do right. she’s been living with a weight on her shoulders since her mother died, a foreboding a sense of when will i be next.

it wasn’t until after the trial, when she finally put a face to and killed the curse thats been plaguing her since birth, that she actually allowed herself to think of the future. she would no longer let her mother’s sacrifices go to waste. she was ready to take charge of her own life, ready to stop being a bystander to tragedy, ready to embrace her role as a protection witch.
