“one day, young man, i shall bring you asgardian liquor. then you shall know good alcohol.” loki promised with a smirk, pointing at phoenix. this ‘booze’ was not good, and he didn’t like that the young man thought so. one had not had a decent libation until they had been gifted with the sweet wines of alfheim. “i hope you find a muse for your erotic novel, for nothing much else is good tonight.”

“Oh, I’m holding you to that promise. It might be the only thing that’ll get me through these next few years.” Really, Phoenix didn’t want to develop a taste for godly alcohol that was unattainable, but maybe if he got on this guy’s good side then he’d be in for a lifetime’s supply. “Honestly, I thought Halloween of all nights would be your thing. You know, the Trickster God and all that. Seems like a match made in heaven. Or, I suppose... Asgard.”

jasper didn’t answer for a while. at least, verbally – he took phoenix’s cigarette from between his fingers before he could put it to his mouth and kept it for himself. opening the small bathroom window, jasper leant against the wall and exhaled smoke into the night air. typically, he would have hotboxed the bathroom, not caring who walked in, but something about him had softened lately, or become more considerate. jasper wondered if now was the time to talk to phoenix about… everything. the thought made him feel dizzy with nerves, so instead he took another drag. “prolly. you gotta fuckin’ work tomorrow, don’t you?”

Phoenix didn’t even have the motivation to be pissed off about Jasper taking his cigarette. In fact, there was something that was so damn attractive about it. So instead he lit up another and, being somewhat less bothered about the lungs of other bathroom-goers, breathed out into the cold room, twisting the smoke lazily into patterns as it rose and dispersed. “Mm,” he answered, as if saying ‘don’t remind me’, then tilted his head to look at him. “I doubt anyone will show up for class, so why should I? Don’t say you are. Otherwise, I’d have to ditch you for being a fuckin’ nerd.”

“It won’t, but that’s because you’re not holding it right. Give it here... Now watch this--” Phoenix angled it and threw it, then had it circle round and come back in his direction where he caught it. “I’d teach you, but I think you need Aussie blood to get it right.”

loki had to admit, phoenix’s cynicism and sarcastic attempts to fit into the night’s frivolities were most humorous to him. the young man was quite likable to the old one. “i suppose. i’ve heard a lot about trickery, but i mostly see half naked writhing. it’s quite graceless. is the candy any good, at least?”

“‘Half naked writhing’. I like that. I might borrow it for my next erotica novel,” Phoenix laughed. He loved the way Asgardians talked. It was almost as funny as the Australians. “Some of it is decent. Actually, the candy is probably the one good part. And the booze. Yeah, scratch that. The booze is the one good part of any Halloween party.”

If there was one thing Phoenix loved more than getting drunk, it was getting drunk with Jasper. But tonight, both of them had exceeded their natural limits - quite a feat - and now they were in this grotty bathroom, on the verge of losing all the contents of their stomachs. “I fucking love Halloween, don’t you?” He was laughing mostly because this sucked and he had stuff to do the next day. It would be a miracle if he was up before 3pm. Slapping his friend on the back, he leaned up against a wall and lit a cigarette clumsily. “You reckon this was a bad idea?” 

god, jasper was so fuckin’ cooked. he’d drunk far too much, draining more bottles than normal, and he was sure whatever brownie he’d just eaten had been laced with something a little stronger than cocoa powder. regardless, splashing the cold water on his face helped ground him. jasper was furious with himself for being so intoxicated; it wasn’t fun anymore, and it wasn’t helping dull any pain. he’d noticed phoenix trail into the bathroom behind him. “no vomit yet, mate.” he slurred. // @fireboyphoenix !!

“Trust me, I ask the same questions every year.” Phoenix took a swig from his bottle, then re-positioned the devil horns on his head, his halfhearted ‘costume’ for the night. “Some aspects can be fun. But most of it is to sell cheap, tacky decorations and an excessive amount of candy.” 

“halloween candy is so – bright.” loki frowned, picking through the candy corn he’d cupped in his hand. “what is halloween for? why are you all dressed up?” he didn’t get it, and the god wasn’t sure he’d like the answer. whilst he enjoyed a good scare, he wasn’t sure why people would make a holiday out of it.

Phoenix ran his fingers through his hair, annoyed. “I’m not done with it,” he answered flatly. He glanced at the dummy in the corner of the room, then set it alight. “Besides. Now there’s nothing for you practice on.”

Phoenix didn’t often visit the pool. After all, fire and water didn’t mix. It was only when he felt out of control that he came down to soak for a while, letting the water wash away his anger and frustrations. It wasn’t always a pleasant sensation-- it felt like something got cut off, something as important as his heartbeat or breath. But it was cathartic nevertheless. He normally came at this time to be alone, and so was surprised to see the young woman swimming there. “Just admiring the view,” he said coolly, hiding his irritation that his solitude had been denied.

After spending nearly all night awake and half of the day sleeping, Evelyn had almost felt like her one day off during the school week had been a waste. Deciding against going to the actual gym, she packed a bag and walked down to the pools. Transforming her body into appearing as if she had a bathing suit, Eve took off the flip flops that she had been wearing, put everything in a locker, and dove in. After a couple of laps, she poked her head up and paused. “What’re you staring at?”

with a deep sigh, jasper lowered himself back into his seat. part of him wanted to tell phoenix what was going on. rubbing a hand over his face, he knew he should; but he couldn’t. he couldn’t do it. talking about it made it real and he wasn’t ready for it to be real just yet. “i know you fuckin’ care, dickhead.” jasper said, softer than he intended. it stung to hear phoenix question the integrity of their friendship, and suddenly he felt very guilty. “we do, mate, we do. i promise we do, i just–” his whole body flushed hot with a shame he couldn’t place and he wore the same blank expression he did as a teenager when he was wracked with guilt and sadness. “–i just don’t know what it’s about.”

Phoenix wasn’t good with dealing with other people’s emotions, even when it was somebody he cared about. So seeing Jasper looking so... He couldn’t even described it. Lost, maybe. It broke his heart, but that didn’t mean he could pull together an appropriate response. “Well... Well, just come talk to me when you’ve figured out whatever it is.” Suddenly, Phoenix was too aware of his limbs, and had no idea where to put his arms. Eventually, he settled on crossing them. “But you know, whatever it is, it’s probably not as bad as you think it is. I mean, fuck, mate-- You’ve been through some shit. We both have. After all that, most things shouldn’t seem so bad.”
