This module has been the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. With COVID-19 and personal mental health issues, I’ve not being able to physically get stuck in and create things with my hands. I have really struggled with this unit.
It was really depressing to have such a drive to create and to be stunned being unable to create and test what I wanted to. The tools I have at my disposal of very limited as the only photo Editing software that works for me is a M.S. paint as my laptop cannot support the software such as photo shop. Since it’s impossible for me to draw reflections on mirrors as it would be I’m having to rely heavily on previous images on my imagination of how this would become visually.
This is not always a bad thing however, as it has cause me to think of how I can create things deeper than what I would have and I’m very excited to get back in the studios in September and give these ideas physical shape. I also feel very motivated that if I can overcome this I can overcome anything, and that I will take every opportunity given to me when this is all over.
One of the benefits to the situation is that I’ve learnt that using an online format such as a blog to be very beneficial for a sketchbook. Not only can I directly link sources and articles I can also link videos for me to watch easily, and not be as limited as I was due to dyslexia as handwriting isn’t an issue in here. As I don’t spend as much time having to write and link images this gives me more time to research and I have found I can research much more quickly and a large array of artists due to this. In this blog I am relying heavily on speech to text software this may lead to errors in this text and others in this blog which I am unable to pick up on. Usually my work is overseen by others and Diana with scribe and check my work and English. I apologise for the inconvenience as you go through my blog.

Due to the strange timing of the modules I didn’t realise the exhibition we had for Christmas was a part of this module therefore, I did not attach the details that are written about it at the start of this blog from speaking to Diana I realise it was needed and so I am incerting that here.
Sorry for any confusion.

Speakers.
Since I want this room to influence senses I decided audio would be a good way of doing this throughout the room, sitting in the room with you I would like some small speakers that would project soothing sounds helping me to put people in the mood that I am aiming for. Some examples of said sounds will be linked below.

Until I am able to set up the room I am unable to see which sounds would of worked best or wether they would all work and maybe I’d have a mix. I would have to determine which sounds invoke the best feelings at the room although I am happy with most of these. I feel they will have positive effects of all the other elements of the room.

Since I want my viewers to be relaxed I wanted to try and make my room seamless. To do this I need a place to sit down but encourage them to take the time to view my work. While they relax they can interact more with the things around them. Since my rigs would be moving I would like to think that the viewer would feel comfortable sitting there and watching as the colours dance around the room, forever reflecting. I want them to have a lot of emotions. I want this to be a pleasant experience which is also soothing. Underneath my beanbag is a strip of coloured lights outside into the room and to make the view that your part of the installation.

Shadow rigs Are the core component of my work on the things I’ve spent the most time developing. They are inspired by my childhood fascination with light, science and the light spectrum. Inside each of them is a tiny LED light, in the square prison separating that light into different directions casting shadows through the patterns created and onto the surfaces in the room. This is amplified by the mirrors constantly reflecting their shadows and colours back at each other. My Shadow rigs have a large range so as long as they’re in a dark environment, meaning I need a few to have a large impact. I believe three in a room where they are constantly amplified would be a good number but without becoming hazardous however until I am able to see them in action it’s hard to judge what the correct amount would be.
In this situation I’ll be able to create my shadow rigs a lot more professionally than I do currently. While I like the childish nature of my rigs and the ambiguity of it they are very fragile and easily damaged. I’ll still try to keep these factors keeping them looking fragile but create them more sturdier using metal possibly welded together acrylic sheets or other options. On the inside will be coated in a holographic film to project other colours and make them more visually interesting to look at. As I wouldn’t be cutting the patterns out by hand, I’ll be a lot more creative while designing them. I will still keep a childlike simplicity about them, but they could be more varied keeping some geometric patterns by mixing childish shapes with others and my simple dotted hole start designs. I would like my rig study enough to allow for physical examination I was going to add a motor but decided that would potentially put off physical interaction. So I currently am weighing them so they turn on their own influence through touch.

It will be hung with a strong wire such as fishing wire so as it will be invisible to the naked eye and make it look like they were floating.

Interior

Tumblr media
These lamps are often a key part of a sensory room. I researched earlier saving elements of water and aquarium like features and was considering linking my own aquarium into the work due to the great impact it had on me. They can be very interactive as well, often having stereos built-in, buttons to control flow, or even colour changing. Since I want to encourage child like playfulness I would like to add a floor-to-ceiling set of lamps in my room. This will also be amplified by the mirrored roof and floor as well as the mirrors on the walls constantly amplifying the lamps. Giving my viewer opportunity to touch and control these lamps could help them feel connected and the colours would affect moods like my research suggested.

Spyholes
Tumblr media
As mentioned earlier in this blog it is not just the viewer thats inside my installation that I want to connect to, I also want to expand the curiosity to affect those outside the installation taking place. Due to this I will insert spyholes into the walls, however it will not be perfect, to help with this I may need to sand and scratch the lens so as it’s not crystal clear. Due to the kinetic nature of the shadow rig inside the shop creating a kaleidoscope of colours constantly changing, so it was a new experience each time.
Here is a test I created using the spyholes and a simulation of what I believe it’s visually going to look like while I’m peeping through.

Tunnel entrance
Tumblr media
As mentioned before I am attempting to reconnect the viewer to there childhood, this is giving me the idea to recreate a child’s play area with the tunnel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I would hope this will be a bit nostalgic well sparking child like curiosity that is rare in adults and having to crawl to explore will make the viewer use the sense of touch prepping them to reach my installation which will trigger the senses.
The interior will be very different however to that of a Childs play tunnel and will be heavily inspired by Alisons work. By having it mirrored it should be very overwhelming for the viewer as they continue down the tunnel creating an infinity effect help them feel that this is out of this world and they are about to descend into something like they’ve never experienced before.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
The end of the tunnel leads to a set of string lights that are heavily used in sensory rooms. The motion of having to part the lights and interact physically as once again involving their senses and make them feel connected to the work that they are going on adventure, which will often be felt by children which is rare in adults.
Tumblr media
Behind the lights be an ordinary black curtain to vent the light penetrating into the main room and vice versa, it will also create a sense of mystery as it is completely unknown to the viewer at that point.

Consept 3
This concept was imagined with the idea that money was not limited enough to be very experimental, this has led me to design an installation which while currently I am unable to create in such a manner I have the potential to possibly create this in the future. The design itself is created as if it was in the Tate modern gallery in one of its large rooms. It involves elements that I intend to have in my current physical piece and something more experimental I wanted to try.
There was many elements that was unable to capture via a drawing so I’ll have to explain them through images and examples breaking down each part. I will do so in a post for each part so I can attach said images.

( the wall lamps are my attampt as shoeing what my projecting may look like and refelct in the mirrors. there was no way of addig anything holograthic in game. other then the celing the colours are what i would want, they judt cant roatate in game as i would want for real life.
its not perfect but it gives me an idea what it might look like in real like and i can text things out. will a mirrored celing i knoe it wold look 100 times better and i think m little experment was a suckcess. im going to attmet to make other desines but its not easy when my latop dosnt soport photoshop and other such sotware, i have no skill or time in digtal modling softwhere and my have dealy ansity attacks. progess little by little. baby steps.
