Best Dressed at the 2018 Met Gala
With a theme like "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," the Met Gala red carpet could have quickly gone off the rails. It also could have been an utter snoozefest. But thanks to imagination, commitment to theme, and take-risks attitudes, a handful of celebrities won the night. Ahead, my picks for best dressed at the 2018 Met Gala.

THE SECRET TO WEARING SPRING’S BOLDEST EVENING LOOKS
Alessandra Balazs shares the key to turning heads in the season’s coolest nighttime ensembles.
Tumblr media
New York City is the city that never sleeps and the city that loves fashion – combine those two and you get the runway’s best brights styled in a way that’s ready to take the town after dark. We stopped by some of our favorite spots, including Saks Fifth Avenue’s iconic flagship, with actress and hospitality heiress Alessandra Balazs.
“We saw a lot of bold, rich colors and wild fabrics during fashion week, and I loved how they were styled on the runway,” says Balazs. “There was an element of simplicity that allowed the individual pieces and their structured shapes to speak for themselves.”
Tumblr media
The pieces Balazs is referring to—iridescent lamé gowns that shimmer like the tail of a mermaid, body-skimming pastel dresses, tiered taffeta pouf skirts, and futuristic high-shine jackets—certainly stood out on the catwalk. And, despite their mega-watt brilliance and statement-making appearance, they’re actually surprisingly easy to wear IRL. For a big night out, sure, but also—with a little styling know-how—for daytime, too. Knowing which pieces are the right ones to invest in is also key. If department stores are your jam, a place like Saks (whose Saks Fifth Avenue Club offers styling appointments) is an easy one-stop shop.
Helmut Lang jacket, $695, saks.com; Stella McCartney skirt, $1,495, saks.com; Lele Sadoughi earrings, $135, saks.com; Edie Parker bag; Jimmy Choo shoes, $995, saks.com
Tumblr media
The first step in taking an out-of-this-world item from afternoon meetings to afterwork meet-ups, Balazs says, is to plan ahead by picking items that aren’t restrictive. “I gravitate toward pieces that are well cut; I’m always running between events, dinners, and flights, so it’s important that my outfit is comfortable and versatile,” she explains.
Carolina Herrera dress, $2,690, saks.com; MSGM denim jacket, $495, saks.com; Manolo Blahnik shoes, $625,saks.com
Tumblr media
The actress—who describes her style aesthetic as “feminine with an edge”— recommends choosing the show-stopping evening piece first and then building the rest of your look around it: “I prioritize the piece I want to wear at night, then I just dress it down during the day with flats and a sweater.”
Rosie Assoulin dress, $6,995, saks.com; Saint Laurent heels, $1,595,saks.com
Tumblr media
When it comes to truly pulling off a risky look, no amount of logistics matters if you haven’t got the right attitude. “The most important part of making any statement piece work is owning it,” says Balazs. “Confidence is absolutely key when wearing a loud piece—make sure that you’re wearing it and it’s not wearing you.”
Attico dress, $2,315, saks.com; Marni bag, $2,380, saks.com; Aquazurra shoes, $795, saks.com, Oscar de la Renta earrings
Tumblr media
Sometimes that’s easier said than done, but in the case of this spring’s electric pieces, keeping up a little joie de vivre shouldn’t be too difficult. After all, there’s something intrinsically playful about glitter, sparkle, and shine. “Someone once told me, ‘it’s just clothing, have fun with it,” Balazs muses. “I found that extremely liberating, and it inspired me to try new things. Even if it doesn’t work out, what’s the worst thing that can happen?” And anyway, as Balazs points out, we’re all born with the one accessory that makes any outfit a winner: “A big smile. It never hurts.”
Oscar de la Renta dress, $4,990, saks.com; Diane von Furstenberg trench coat, $479, saks.com; Alexandre Birman shoes, $625, saks.com; Oscar de la Renta earrings, $395, saks.com

CHANEL Ready-to-Wear Show
Outdoorsy is not a descriptor for the fashion set. This is a breed that likes their chauffeured cars and sky high heels. But Karl Lagerfeld forced an embrace of the great outdoors today, transforming the Grand Palais into a dark forest, with a bed of damp leaves on the ground and logs for seating. The setting indicated we’d be in for a cozy collection, far more practical and wearable than the plastic-coated spring 2018 collection. Model Grace Elizabeth opened the show in a black wool floor-length coat, tights, and brogues. The internet would say her hair was in a struggle bun—a look she’d probably wear to run out and grab coffee on a Sunday. Similar looks followed: to-the-ankle coats, nubby knits, more brogues. One model with a thick gray scarf wrapped over her head gave off a Little Red Riding Hood vibe. As in many shows this fashion month, Karl’s collection featured an injection of the '80s: Madonna-esque hot pink fingerless gloves, tulle skirts, door knocker earrings.

Supreme x Rimowa Is the Most Hypebeast Luggage I’ve Ever Seen
It's also, you know, really good quality.
Tumblr media
This week, hypebeasts around the world were greeted with the opportunity to look even better while traveling (perhaps to meet other hypebeasts around the world). Venerable German company Rimowa—best known for its super-high-quality aluminum luggage—has teamed up with NYC-based Supreme on a tight capsule collection of roller bags.
There are two versions of Rimowa's Topas roller: a carry-on and one sized for check in. Both feature aluminum bodies, rolling wheels, TSA combo locks, and two internal dividers. The smaller version clocks in at 45 liters of capacity and a price tag of $1,600. The larger size ups things to 82 liters, and retails for $1,800. Both are all but guaranteed to inspire line-ups when they drop on April 12 at Supreme stores in New York, London, and Paris—and again when they hit select Rimowa stores on April 14.
This being a Supreme collab, you can also bet that they'll set out faster than you can blink, then hit the resale market at insane markups. If you want in, our advice is to get shopping early and keep trying. The dual-date drop is a blessing. Good luck.
