I think a primary issue comes along when we criticize people on their faith. If you say a Christian is bad, especially for something they believe to be true, that does little to affect them because it's an affirmation of their belief. You justify their Christianity by labeling their actions as Christians. Conversely, those who are liberal and progressive will feel their results worthless in light of the accusations. This applies everywhere, not just to Christians, but to Muslims, Santani, various polytheists and so on. The more you focus in the religion, the more solidified it becomes.

Athanaisus mentioned a separation between church and the state in his history of Arians and I find that it would be applied here. When not in the church or institution immediate, you're not ordained to burn incense. That is to say, you are to be treated as a human according to humanitarian ethics, not as a Christian, Santani, Muslim, Heathen, Hellenic Polytheist and so on. Before your religion, you are a person born of the blood and flesh, and thus no religion is justification. Your actions are entirely your own. Therefore, no religion should be ascribed to the act because it is no longer a religious issue (homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, racism, terfs, ableism, sexism, gender discrimination, anti-intellectualism, censorship, suppression, suicide rates, bullying, assault of any form), it is a human issue. It is therefore concern for everyone, and we work against the person, not the random adjectives they have. We work for the love of those who are suffering and are to come (so they won't experience what we did ) and not just for the pure hatred.

You gotta read and watch some old books and films that aren’t 100% modern politically correct. I’m not saying you should agree with everything in them but you need to learn where genres came from to understand what those genres are doing today and where media deconstructing old tropes is coming from.

Also, more often than you might think, they’re not actually promoting bigotry so much as “didn’t consider all the implications of something” or just used words that were polite then but considered offensive now.
