Summary: Wei Ying doesn’t know what to make of it when, after he so publicly confronts the Jins, his staunchest supporter turns out to be… Zewu-jun? (Or, Lan Xichen time travels, immediately goes about fixing things, and promptly confuses the fuck out of everyone along the way.) Kay's comments: Ah, POV Outsider on time-travel stories can be so fun! Especially if it's just confusing to everyone around! Here we have POV Wei Wuxian on a time-travelling Lan Xichen, who stands up for him when he first asks after the Wens after Wen Qing came to hime for help. Wei Wuxian is mostly passive here, as Lan Xichen takes the lead, and I absolutely love it. Suddenly, he finds himself in the Jingshi, with Lan Wangji taking playing with A-Yuan and wonderung: Huh... How did I end up here again? Super great and hopeful story! Excerpt: “Er-ge,” Jin Guangyao steps forward from beside his father’s seat, ready to smooth things over with his sworn brother. Lan Xichen calmly turns his head to meet his eyes, head tilting in a gentle gesture of encouragement. Although… There seems to be something off about it. Something coiled, something sad, something devastated. Wei Ying is confused. A quick glance at Lan Zhan shows him that it clearly isn’t his imagination either, the merest of furrows between the Second Jade’s brow as he watches Zewu-jun. Like, Lan Zhan, too, might be uncertain what to make of his brother’s uncharacteristic demeanor at the moment. Silence reigns for several elongated moments, Jin Guangyao appearing somewhat taken aback by the uncharacteristically inflexible look on his sworn brother’s usually so amicable face. Still, he rallies himself quickly, speaking softly, demurely, bowing his head in supposed agreement, “Er-ge is of course right. Such accusations should be considered carefully for their… merit.” It is that brief pause at the end which almost has Wei Ying wanting to applaud the man for his delicate phrasing. As though everyone here isn’t aware that Jin Guangyao is – once more and forever again – pointing out the disparity between Wei Ying’s station as the accuser and Jin What’s-His-Face’s as the accused. A not-so-subtle reminder that it is the mere son of a servant, who is daring to speak against one of the gentry. How laughable.

It takes far too long for Wei Ying to realize that Wen Ning just diverted Lan Zhan’s attention to him because suddenly those golden brown eyes are staring directly into his soul and it hurts more than he would have expected. OR Wei Ying and Lan Zhan lost touch when Wei Ying's family moved away when they were kids. Wei Ying moves back to his hometown years later, meeting the man he once knew as his best friend. Kay's comments: I am so weak for modern AUs where Wei Wuxian's parents live! i wish more authors were brave enough to not kill Wei Wuxian's parents in a modern AU. This story was extremely fluffly with only minimal angst. In which Wangxian are childhood friends who find each other again and then immediately go all in, as they would <3 I really loved the idea of Wei Wuxian making custom plushies and pet clothes, very cute!

Well DAMN, this starts with a bang, the Jins stating that wwx and the wens (vanished from their ken) should be hunted down and brought to justice. This makes lwj… feel some things. (None of them good.)

Story is from lwj’s POV – and his voice is FANTASTIC, and author’s style is dreamy and vivid, which brings his perspective to life. He follows wwx and the Wens, and eventually finds them, hidden behind talismans and barriers in a far corner of the wide, wild world. He joins them, but acceptance of him is slow (except for A-Yuan), and wwx is not doing well at all, draining himself until there’s nothing left. But slowly their lives congeal, homes are wrestled from the ruin of the abandoned town, crops are planted, wwx and lwj learn to understand each other better (and lwj is THOROUGHLY commited, although quietly sad that he’ll never see his brother again).

Culminates in an endeavor which shreds lwj’s back (like the 33 lashes) and very nearly kills him and forces this tiny Wen Clan to make a choice.

Excerpt:  “Bright-gege, where’s Xian-gege ?”

“He is— occupied.” The explanation is insufficient, but he does not know what else to say. Perhaps a-Yuan is familiar with Wei Ying’s clouded moods, because the boy frowns in something resembling recognition.

“Is he still sad?”

“I believe so.”

He considers this. “When a-Yuan is sad, Xian-gege makes it better.”

Wangji has no idea how to explain the wrenching, sucking sorrow of Wei Ying’s situation, of the estrangement of his family, how he has given up everything he has known to sequester himself in the furthest corner of the world in the hopes of keeping a-Yuan and all the rest safe. It is something even he cannot conceive in its entirety, everything Wei Ying has willingly let go in the name of doing what is right. He does not have the words to explain it to the boy.

“Sometimes,” he says, stilted, “the only thing one can do is be sad.”

“You should rest,” he murmurs, thumb sweeping against the curve of his knee, cloth bunching and unbunching with each stroke. Wei Ying watches the motion and meets his gaze. Wangji memorizes it, folds it thrice and tucks it in his chest, buried among the roots of the sapling seeded within.

Summary: At sixteen Wei Wuxian is—through some strange twist of fate, or a nick in the layer between parallel universes, who knows—out of the blue confronted with that one incense burner dream one night. While his curious mind is left unable to stop poking at this new perspective on Lan Wangji, circumstances in the Cloud Recesses begin to change and Wei Wuxian is suddenly presented with life-altering opportunities. Maybe Gusu isn’t so bad after all? (Or alternatively: The fic where I get to give Wei Wuxian the academic scholarship he deserves while simultaneously getting him hitched early on.) Kay's comments: Honestly, if you haven't heard of this fic yet, then you've probably lived under a rock this past year, haven't you? It's definitely The Fic™ and has been for a while now and it's already been recommended a few times by followers already, but I need to give it a personal shout-out as well, because I adore this story. It's living rent-free in my brain and despite already having more than 600k words, I re-read it like every other month and never get tired of it. One of the highlights is definitely TomatenMark's incredible attention to detail. Something will get mentioned once in chapter five and ten chapters later it'll suddenly be a major plot point. I also really adore the numerous characters TomatenMark has added to the story, they are all working so beautifully in the story and I find myself caring for them very much! As for the plot, it's basically a Cloud Recesses canon-divergence where WangXian get together and get married during the lectures and it kickstarts a canon-divergence that looks much better than the original timeline while also staying true to the characters and not sugarcoating things. If you haven't already, you should definitely check this story out! Excerpt: “I regard Lan Zhan highly,” he tried to reassure and Lan Xichen interestedly hummed, prompting him to add, “If I ever make him unhappy in some way I’d be the first to beat myself up over it.” Lan Xichen nodded and twinkled at him but Wei Wuxian didn’t dare to relax. “You seem to be quite dedicated,” the other noted. “And Wangji seems to return the sentiment given how he returned without any protection from the storm when I was quite sure I had seen him leave with his coat that afternoon.” “Ah. Er, yeah, Lan Zhan was so kind as to lend it to me when it started to rain,” Wei Wuxian explained, feeling on edge from the other’s roundabout way of hinting at something Wei Wuxian wasn’t sure he was even knowingly hinting at. “However, I have noticed that your neck was quite bruised when you returned, Wei-gongzi,” Lan Xichen went on. Wei Wuxian’s head snapped up from where he had held it politely lowered before. Lan Xichen’s eyes were overflowing with mirth. He definitely knew what he was hinting at!! “I hope you two didn’t get into a fight?” the Lan sect heir innocently mused and Wei Wuxian felt his resolve break. “Zewu-jun, please don’t torture me like this,” he begged.

In the morning, he sought his elder brother's guidance and asked for punishment (and possibly exorcism). Lan Wangji respected his elder brother’s judgement about how best Lan Wangji was to learn this lesson. Some knowledge could only be acquired through direct experience and deep contemplation, and cannot be taught through a simple telling of facts. Perhaps this was one of those lessons. Lan Wangji would endeavor to understand this lesson so he could regain his self control and discipline, and once again find inner peace. ... Lan Wangji did not find inner peace.

That is how much they respect the Lan sect— or how much they fear them. When he is escorted to the middle of the room, the cultivators part in front of him, going to their own seats, leaving him there, with two Lan disciples at his sides. Wei Wuxian bows to show his respect to Hanguang-jun, who is seated on the elevated seat that he makes look like a throne. “Approach,” Hanguang-jun says. His voice is firm and authoritative, the voice of a leader, a commander. Wei Wuxian obeys. In which Wei Wuxian figures out quickly that he isn't meant to be a hostage, but he doesn't quite know how to deal with the fact that he is being treated like an esteemed guest. He isn't complaining though. Kay's comments: A delightful warprize AU with a twist! In which the Lan Sect defeats the Wens on their own and Lan Wangji ascends as a sect leader. He demands a price from the other sects and they deliver to him - Wei Wuxian. The kind of story that makes me giddy and kick my feet in delight, because it has wonderful world-building, amazing relationship development between Wangxian with great characterization and also fun mysteries and politics. Actually, this is kind of a sugar daddy AU and you can bet that Wei Wuxian loves having Lan Wangji as his sugar daddy, who provides him not not with love, but also a home. I'd rate this story as Explicit, since there is some explicit smut in it. Excerpt: “I will, therefore, be the one who acts as your guide.” Oh, so he had been mistaken about Hanguang-jun's intentions. But a guide? Wei Wuxian has been suspecting this whole time that he is not here as a mere hostage— he has been treated far too well, given far too many privileges and too much freedom for that to be the case— and this certainly adds more credence to that theory, but that only raises another question. Exactly what purpose he here for? Before Wei Wuxian can ask any of his questions, Hanguang-jun hands a book over to him. “I have heard that you are talented at crafting talismans,” he says. “This is a treatise by Lan Shoushan on the subject. I would appreciate your thoughts on it, once you have finished reading it.” What? This seems a bit unbelievable to him. Hostage or not, Wei Wuxian has hardly been here a day and Hanguang-jun was not only letting him into his office while he worked, he was giving him a treatise by a Lan ancestor— that too, based on Wei Wuxian’s interests, his talent, that Hanguang-jun had somehow heard of— and was asking for his opinion on it? What madness was this? Was Wei Wuxian hallucinating wildly?

Kay's comments: Lovely, short story in which Wangxian are already a little older and have probably met not during the Cloud Recesses lectures, but instead during night-hunts. During the fic, they have already been in a relationship for a while when Wei Wuxian accompanies Jiang Yanli to the Cloud Recesses where she's set to meet Jin Zixuan on a more neutral ground. During their visit, Wei Wuxian also encounters Lan Xichen and Lan Qiren for the first time and takes the chance to ask Lan Qiren about his parents, because he doesn't know anything about them. I really enjoyed the sibling-bond between Jiang Yanli and Wei Wuxian in this story and having Wangxian have an established relationship also works out beautifully. Wei Wuxian definitely feels more mature and settled in this story.

Excerpt: “He is the one, Xiongzhang.” Surprised, he turns to meet calmly familiar honey-golden eyes. “You never told me that you knew Wei-gongzi personally. I could have-” Gently his brother breaks one of their rules and interrupts Lan Xichen before he can continue speaking to ask questions and make plans for the inevitable future that his sweet didi might be envisioning. “We have not spoken of the matter of marriage yet. Though he has accepted my ribbon.” Wangji calmly responded. The words sounded so well rehearsed that they caused surprise to form within the confines of Lan Xichen’s soul upon hearing them. He was surprised that he had missed that Wangji had secretly proposed to someone, along with his quiet joy at the acceptance. “There is more that we wish to do before settling.”

As a cold, powerful, immortal vampire that Lan Wangji was about to sell himself to. OR Lan Wangji enters into a contract to become Wei Wuxian's blood thrall to save his uncle, and finds more than a heartless vampire at the end of the deal. Kay's comments: A fic recommendation for the sub and bottom Lan Wangji connoisseurs out there! I really enjoyed this story, it had some fun world-building, the relationship development between Wangxian went from 0 to 100 real fast (as it should be), there was some wonderful angst and some delicious angst here. In which Lan Wangji becomes immortal vampire Wei Wuxian's blood thrall (and sugar baby, kinda) to pay for medicine for his uncle, but of course, Wangxian being Wangxian, they fall for each other hard and fast, even if they're not ready to acknoledge it immediately.

Summary: People attain marks of colour on their skin from those who love them. Wei WuXian has no discolouration on his body at all. Kay's comments: So, this story is a twist on a few similar stories that also feature a Wei Wuxian that has never attained a mark from someone who loves him and doesn't find reason in that in a curse of something similar, which of course, puts his relationship to everyone in his life in a perspective (not his parents though, because they died before they could leave marks on him). Wei Wuxian feels a lot about his lack of marks and hides this secret away, which unfortunately leads to people drawing the wrong conclusions as well. I really loved this exploration of his relationships and about how there can be friendship and fondness, but no love. But of course, that changes with Lan Wangji. I also enjoyed the canon-divergent twist of this story featuring no Sunshot Campaign and Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian going on night-hunts together during the Cloud Recesses Study Arc, allowing them to grow closer earlier. Excerpt: Jin ZiXuan was not liked by either him or Jiang Cheng. He hid the rosy discolouration that Jiang YanLi left on him as if ashamed. He had no problem showing the ones from his family but YanLi’s was always covered, his forearm never staying without some sort of fabric masking what’s there. “My engagement has nothing to do with my opinion on who would be the best amongst the young maidens.” The peacock ignored the others after claiming that and Wei WuXian lost it right about then. “Who do you think you’re talking about?” Straightening up, Jiang Cheng stood tall next to him as well, probably just as furious. “Why does that matter to you Wei-Xiong?” He could tell that Nie HuaiSang had no idea that the idiotic git was betrothed to their sister so he managed to keep his anger solely on the peacock. “Who do you reckon could be better than my Shijie?” Murmurs erupted as Wei WuXian was tempted to punch him but another person from the LanlingJin Clan has stepped forward. “WuXian aren’t you just a son of servant? Just who do you think you are to talk like that to a future Sect Leader?” “Wei WuXian is the head discipline of the YunmengJiang Sect, it’s you who should watch what you’re saying!” Jiang Cheng was shaking next to him and Wei WuXian could tell that he will lose it at any given second. “Oh...how silly of me. I seemingly forgot that your father had quite the life. Are you mad that he loves his illegitimate son more? Is that why WuXian is always so bundled up?! Ha, it must hurt to see how much deeper your father’s affection is for him than you.”

Every now and then, I'm in the mood for some good!Lan Qiren and supportive!Lan Qiren stories and this one scratches the itch, delivering wonderfully without feeling out of character! Excerpt: An hour and some calls later, it is established that Wei Ying can stay with a friend of Lan Qiren's nephews. The Nie boy, as decadently irresponsible as he is, has enough space for a guest without being cramped. Pampered boy. So that's one problem down. Lan Qiren can help Wei Ying secure a scholarship. Won't be difficult, with his good track record. He may be disruptive and full of cheek, but he always delivers excellence when it counts. Maybe that's what always exasperated Lan Qiren about him. Wei Ying mentions he may want to come out, live on his own terms, if he's gonna be on his own now. Lan Qiren is absolutely livid that the boy's family would send him away for a gender thing, in this day and age!

Mojo's comments: Oh, this was an interesting crossover. POV focus is kind of on everyone (so if you aren't passingly familiar with both MDZS and TGCF, you'll probably be lost), as Jiang Yanli is found as a teeny new ghost flame and nurtured by her new friends into a full Calamity. The premise is so unique, I love it: a ghost who stayed because of love, rather than resentment.

"Shijie is right, if Lan Zhan doesn't want to come, he wouldn't have accepted my invitation. I know him, he wouldn't do it if he was really set on not coming." -- In which, in their youth Lan Wangji does decide to visit Wei Wuxian at Lotus Pier after being invited several times. One might say he experiences culture shock.

Kay's comments: I really enjoyed this exploration of Lan Wangji accepting Wei Wuxian's invitations and visiting him at Lotus Pier after the Lectures! Teenage Wangxian are on point in this story and I loved reading about Lan Wangji slowly coming to understand that things at Lotus Pier are very much different from how things are at the Cloud Recesses and of course, there are misunderstandings and pining, but nothing feels forced. It's all very natural! Really impressive for being the author's first fic in this fandom!

Excerpt: "Being hospitable is fine, but she's constantly bending over backwards for those two, you'd think Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji are Chief Cultivators!" "I assure you - ," Lan Wangji began his attempt to calm the woman he had seemingly offended. Madam Yu short him a look so sharp she may have as well pointed a sword at his direction, "I am talking to my husband." Jiang Fengmian sighed, "There is really no need to be upset. No one has meant any harm!" "I'm not upset in the slightest!" Madam Yu practically screamed, "you're always making it sound like I'm acting oh so unreasonable!" Lan Wangji stood at that, "It is clear to me that my visit has caused you great inconvenience. I apologize wholeheartedly and I hate to be the cause of any sort of distress. I'll be leaving back to Gusu first thing in the morning if you'd still be so kind to let me spend the night here."

Nie Huaisang gave a heavy sigh. None of it excused the things Jin Guangyao had done. None of it would make him forgive his brother’s death. But did it have to be that way? This was a child. A child who was crying in the night, on the cold stone he had as a bed, because someone he looked up to had hurt him. How could he blame him for what he had become? How could he say that this boy deserved death? Who was he to make that judgment? Could he save both his brothers? Or: Nie Huaisang accidentally adopts a bunch of chaos gremlins.

Mojo's comments: I am such a sucker for a pied piper of hard-luck orphans. In this case, it's Nie Huaisang, who is such a funny caretaker, he kind of reminds me of the Dread Pirate Roberts, ya know -- 'Good night, Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I'll most likely kill you in the morning.' -- except in a less explicit and more paternal way. Heh. So, his moral compass is very gray, but his actions show a heart of gold, and the kids are very clear on which one speaks the loudest. The first one he picks up is Meng Yao, around the age of 7, then Wei Ying, then Xue Yang (who is a bitey, hilarious, feral cat) and lastly, Mo Yue (not yet, and never Xuanyu, since nhs stole his name back in the beginning of this adventure). So in one way, this story is the Chinese xianxia's answer to Louisa May Alcott's Little Men, except with a time travelling single dad. So nhs wanders around the edges of the cultivators' world, claiming to be a disciple of Baoshan Sanren, hanging out with different sects to get his boys some training (and maybe learn some secrets) and periodically, maybe, slaying a sect leader on the down low. It's magnificent.

Ridiculous, Nie Huaisang thought, and wanted to scream even louder. His brother’s murderer trying to comfort him. Jin Guangyao hadn’t killed Wei Wuxian, and hadn’t even been wholly responsible for his death, but he had certainly played a key part in it. Now this child had the audacity to try to console him, as if he was an entirely different person. Because he was.

Kay's comments: A great kink meme prompt fill! Jiang Yanli is such an interesting character to dissect and especially her relationships with her brothers and parents. Loved to see her standing up to Jiang Cheng and her seeing the parallels between him and their mother.

Excerpt: Jiang Yanli was not in the habit of making assumptions, but there was something recognizable in the way he spoke of this Lan Wangji whom he only ever called Lan Zhan. It had worried her at first, knowing all too well that earnest affection could wound when spurned entirely. If it was indeed young love, of course there was no crime in not reciprocating. She only hoped that he would not be cruel to him if that was the way it would be.

It has so many deep, poignant, moving thoughts about aging, hope, death, love, family, and living, the writing is incredibly gorgeous like a fairytale and I just think it should be shared with fandom!

Hi, I just wanted to highlight the works by diaspora authors in the fandom in the Danmei Diaspora Collection on AO3. I don't see these authors or works getting recced very often and it makes me sad because i know a lot of them feel very burned out and underappreciated in general, and I really think there's something special about them sharing their experiences and capturing certain aspects of Chinese culture that i don't see in others. thanks.
