Somehow my neighborhood cat always knows when I’m coming home with takeout. She loves to trot out almost in front of my car as I turn in the long driveway, and there I can already see her meowing. “Ava,” I tell her, “you should have told me that you wanted a burrito and I would have brought you one!” And Ava pretends not to understand and follows me up to the porch meowing and hopes I’ll change my mind and give her my burrito. Or, like, maybe a little turkey from the fridge. She’s not picky.
