Corrin blinked in surprise, frowning and moving Yato away from the girl as she spoke. Now that she mentioned it, the girl did seem very tangible. Corrin looked around to make sure no other enemies were in range before turning back to the girl.

“Ah, sorry about that. Got a bit caught up in the moment… I’m Corrin, what are you doing here in the middle of the fight?”

Oh thank god. Fern lowers her weapon and listens, one hand moving to her hip. If she got caught up in the moment like that she’d probably kill someone. Kudos to the lady for, you know, not killing her.

“I live here. Or at least, I did before everything caught fire. I’m a performer, sort of. I juggle swords, that sort of thing. The name’s Fern. Do you guys…” She pauses to look at the blaze. It was a really dumb question to ask, but whatever.

“Do you guys need help?”

There went the neighbourhood. She’d probably be a bit more insulted had she been scheduled to perform, but even then she’s still whatever feeling was slightly below miffed. The town was ablaze – not normal. Two armies were clashing in the middle, and a third set of people (maybe, it’s hard to tell) seems to be fighting nothing?

Fern digs into the pouch hanging on the back of her belt and fishes out the pocketwatch. Yeah, this was probably why it had tossed her here. She sighs and unsheaths Outtalbara before slowly trying to get closer. She needed to figure out what was going on before she chose a side… or at least that was the plan.

The sudden sword in her face causes her to jump back and point her own blade back at the other. “Whoa! Hey, hey! Calm! I lived here,” she says. It’s a lie, technically, but as far as anyone on this continent was concerned, it was the truth. “I saw you earlier! You looked like you were fighting something invisible! Do I look invisible to you?!”

One moment they were on the world map denoting the pathways they could use to move from different points of interest on the continent to the other.

The next, she at had led him to a spot that was conspicuously off the mainland and located instead on a small neighboring set of isles. Don’t ask how they managed to do that without a boat to call their own.

The moment following that, he was outnumbered by a bunch of glowing inhuman… whatchamacallits. If they did have names, they weren’t committed to memory. Armed with just a regular no name Iron Sword, he approached the nearest/weakest standalone foe and engaged.

“Gee… I hope I don’t mess up…”

Yu and his new pretty leader Fern had paired up for the sake of affinity and other various bonuses before taking his weapon in hand, getting a good feel for its weight before dashing forward and…

“Strike Through…!”

With a mighty yell, he made a thrusting motion and not only did he run the undistinguished enemy through with his blade using Lightning Flash(236236B), the resulting blowback from the critical hit sent it crashing into a nearby tree with what appeared to be… sparks of thunder?

“Whew… I won by a hare…!” the villager declared with a straight face, having taken not a single speck of damage.

That… was neat. She didn’t even have to help. And he didn’t get hit (contrary to what he’d said). The level up chime does its little ding and Fern stares expectantly. She shouldn’t care, but she does. The livelihood of her entire army could rest on his shoulders.

Level Up! 5 –> 6!

HP: 25 –> 26 Str: 9 –> 10 Mag: 3  Skill: 5 –> 6 Spd: 4  Lck: 3  Def: 4 –> 5 Res: 1 

Not bad. Better than her last level anyway. There was hope here, and where there was hope, there was time to level grind.

“Yay! Now let’s do that again! And again… And again until you can promote. We have a master seal collecting dust.”

Because it didn’t work on her. No matter how many times she tried. She could still feel the bump on her head from it.

Five more levels or so. That’s what Yu would need to answer the call and achieve a more formidable class. “I reckon it might be worth it to get more experience out of me once I get that Aptitude.” he said, more keen on growth than he probably ought to be.  

 “Wait. Nitpicky and magical? I can’t say I’m following you on the meaning of that, Lady Fern…”

“You don’t have to!” And that’s all she’s going to say to that. With any luck he was like everyone else: selective amnesiacs who always seemed to miss her resets. It was easier that way.

DLC Island (what? you thought it would take a while to get there?) wasn’t much to look at. A small hut was home to the pervy sage who’d opened the gates in the first place, but the thing anyone wanted to look at was the giant structure.

Imagine a huge stone arch (that would technically lead to nothing) but then imagine the gate is shaped like the letters DLC all squished together like you’d write them. That’s what her gate looked like. The old man called it an ‘Outrealm gate’, whatever that meant.

On the other side though… that was magical. Fern would be taken to an abyss of nothing except for doors. Each door –  she’d labelled each of them with a piece of parchment and nail after walking into the wrong one once – lead to a differently reality where she could harvest much needed aid: money, experience and scrolls filled with little known skills and jobs. No one else saw door limbo.

Then suddenly they were on a map.

Surrounded by enemies.

“Let’s hit the ground running. Ready to kick some oddly-tough-but-well-worth-it butt?”

Fern

Class: Lord. Probably the descendant of a legendary hero, a mark on her hand made the unpronounceable sword Outtalbara choose her. Now she’s on a quest to save GoodGaia (and all of Tyungdyrll let’s be real here) from the evil Emperor MalBad. Master Seals don’t work on her but even with the sword she’s still just a Lord, implying she’s missing something. Self-aware to the point of bad irony, Fern has to try and keep her own personal 4th wall standing no matter what.

Personal Skill

Mark of Destiny: +2 to all stats during own turn so long as Outtalbara is equipped.

Yu. Just Yu.

Class: Villager. A young, unfortunately named man with a mysterious quality about him that naturally draws in friends. Worked as a farmhand before his village had gotten raided by mostly nameless bandits. Now he takes up arms with the probably-a-legendary descendant, Fern, in hopes of funding the restoration effort. Most can’t tell if he’s being random at times or disturbingly self-aware.

Personal Skill: 

Rally Bonds: All allies that Yu has formed supports with will gain in increase in all stats (excluding maximum HP) equal to their support rank, starting with C x 2.

“I’ve been told by many that I would grow up and do great things… I just didn’t know my call to action would be the people telling me that being slain in a horrible raid.” 

“Maybe I’ll make a new family with you and your friends! I get the feeling that I’ll be able to get along with all of them! Or at least most of the women! I don’t know why… but even when I was just a boy, a lot of girls my age would jump at the chance to get to know me better.”

It’s almost like in another life, this villager could form intimate bonds over the course of his one year adventure! Imagine that.

He does fill out your support list rather nicely. Only one guy though, and you can tell that it was probably supposed to be an S-rank before someone covered it with an A+ in red marker. Weird.

Oh hey, you can marry him. …Stats depending, of course!

“Well, let’s go! We need to get to DLC Island so that we can get you promoted. I know what I’m doing at this point, so you have nothing to worry about! And don’t worry, no one is going to die! I have the power of being-really-nitpicky-and-kind-of-magical on my side!”

“I am Yu. I don’t mean I am you. That’s just the name my mama gave me. It’s just Yu. I don’t mean it’s you, it’s me a-and… oh gosh, let me start over.”

“Name’s Yu. And I believe the power of bonds and hard work can do anything we set our minds to! Thanks for having me.” 

No, this isn’t a support conversation. 

“…”

Suddenly calling him soon-to-be-badass-and-NOT-squishy sounds like a great idea. Yu is a kind of poor choice of name. His mother should be ashamed of herself, assuming she still lived. It made for weird conversation, but that was about it.

But at least he can steer a conversation the right way! She picked the right pretty anime boy candidate out of the crowd of rock monsters villagers.

“That is my kind of thinking! I know that so long as I have my friends, everything is going to be okay!”

Maybe you should go beef him up now. You’re not sure this isn’t a support conversation. This would be an A-rank if it was. That or he’s one of those mandatory-marriage-supports-if-your-rank-is-high-enough types.

…Oh god.

Hmm. 

Could it be that this beautiful heroine knows more than she’s leading onto? He was but a humble villager type unit. Yet she insisted on making him part of her forces to combat this great unknown enemy. What if he died on the field of battle? Turned out expendable enough to place in harm’s way to protect someone else of great importance?  What if he was put on the benches forever!?

But on the other hand…

“We really could use the money. Alright, I’m in.”

Success! Some kid who’s name you don’t know™ has joined your party!

…But that’s another mouth to feed who also expected payment. Oh well! She’d just have to go train against the really rich bandits that lived on the other side of that mysterious gate shaped like the letters DLC.

She might even get someone married!

“I think I mentioned this, but I’m Fern. I’m your noble leader, the heroine of this story and probably the descendant of the DRAGON LORD since I can wield Outtalbara! …But that’s neither here nor there!”

“What’s your name soon-to-be-badass-and-NOT-squishy?”

“Do you mean… me?” The boy in question looked down at the brass pot in his hands and saw that no one else around him had one on his person.

“W-well, ma’am. My hair is more of a gray than proper silver…” he corrected before stepping forward after a moment’s hesitation. 

“I reckon I’m just a simple farmhand though. My friends tell me I’ve got some kind of untapped potential, but do you think it’s worth it to put in the extra back breaking work of protecting someone like me who could possibly carry your entire army for several maps upon promotion?”

“That!” she shouts even more dramatically. “That is why I need you! That is why my army needs you! There’s a map coming that I’ve tr-…” Shit. No. Don’t mention the pocketwatch! “Uh.. I fear that our next foe will be very deadly and I believe that my forces could use some help!”

Nailed it.

“Come with us and you will return as the pride of your village! Embrace your destiny and become the future protector of your quaint home!” Or find someone in the army and get married, I guess. I mean, you are pretty cute.

…This didn’t count as a Support conversation, right?

Well, the village wasn’t on fire. That was a plus. Fern crosses her arms a little to stare at the fallen bandits in the distance before walking into the perimeter of town. Everyone was still in one piece, but they hadn’t really fought close enough to show off and maybe recruit someone…

But she had to try anyway!

“Attention, villagers! My name is Fern and I am the wielder of the legendary Outtalbara! With it I will purge this world from the evil Emperor MalBad who might be trying to resurrect a dark dragon! To do so, I am here to search for volunteers!”

She pauses dramatically and gestures wildly with said legendary blade… “I believe that this is the village where, among your ranks, a hero with the stats needed to overcome blandness will arise!”

Then points dramatically at one man in particular. “You! The tall one with the silver hair and the brass pot! Will you answer my call to arms?”
