I just finished reading Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell by Brandon Sanderson, so spoilers for that below if you want to avoid those :)

I fell in love with this world and the characters immediately, and I’m so happy to see a short story entirely focused on female characters. Silence is incredible, I was so excited when it was revealed that she was the White Fox. I honestly expected the White Fox to be Hoid, considering how he’s everywhere, but I liked this so much better.

This is a total side tangent, but I liked Silence’s daughter being named William Ann; I just like the gender contradiction of the name if that makes sense? I think it’s fun and cool to have a gendered name and use pronouns that don’t “match�� the gender of that name, like William Ann using she/her, or someone like Frank Vos who uses they/them.

The shades were awesome. I liked the slow introduction to how they worked and the rules they followed. The use of silver was interesting, as I don’t think that’s a metal that’s come up much before (I could be wrong, I’m still working my way through all of the Cosmere so I don’t know everything). I thought it was neat that the silver degraded after being used against the shades. It reminds me of the sand from White Sand in that sense, and it makes me wonder if silver is related to Investiture at all, and if so, if the silver could be reinvested and be made useful again. I have no idea how feasible that is or if it’s actually right or anything, just speculating.

GOING CRAZY

Now I’m just thinking about the parallels that could be drawn between Gertrude Robinson and Silence’s grandmother. Like. Woagh. They both have that overly tough to survive thing going for them.

Gertrude and Silence TOTALLY would’ve stopped Jonah together no problem.
