in da2 there’s a banter between varric and fenris where they talk about the money fenris owes and whether he’ll come by the tavern for wicked grace later, and he says ‘never miss it’ and i got reAL fuckin weepy out of nowhere. it’s such a normal sitcom conversation and you wouldn’t normally think anything of it in a game full of Serious Character Development but it’s fenris getting to choose who and what he spends his time on and he sounds so settled and happy, he has friends and he has his own place (sortof) and he has hawke, he made a life where he gets to choose every single aspect of it, and he chooses to have a nice night out at a bar with friends. he has a reputation for being a grumpy loner but i think he was a loner by necessity, not innate character.

his character arc in this game fkcing kills my ass. he started out a fugitive ex-slave on the run, who had suffered abuses and a desperate pursuit for years, alone, ends with his freedom, surrounded by a circle of friends who love him, some time to have a little normal in his life, a little peace. or as much as anyone in hawke’s inner circle can have.

Veilguard Gothic

you have endangered thedas by unleasing blighted gods upon the world. you are rewarded with a promotion.

a demon-possessed assassin joins the veilguard. he is on cooking duty.

you feel a sudden urge to leap from the top of the lighthouse. as if you will be rewarded.

taash gives a flat, one-word answer after your careful attempt to flirt. they will soon pin you to a wall.

a grey warden joins the veilguard. he would like it if you punched his boss.

someone let harding cook again.

the grey warden brought his pet griffin. he always has one ear up. he is perfect.

you arrive at the lighthouse to find someone changed all the decor to giant skeletons. emmrich feels less homesick.

you gather the veilguard together for a mission debrief. instead, you all gossip about solas before he was corporeal.

bellara is already writing fan fiction of your adventures.

someone let neve make coffee again.

manfred is undefeated at rock, paper, scissors. it brings him almost as much joy as tea. he is perfect.

you finally leap from the top of the lighthouse. nothing happens. yet you can't shake the feeling of achievement.

I know that like, every LI goes to comfort Hawke regardless but for Fenris's romance I think it's a very touching moment because at this point, they don't even have a relationship going on.

He is well aware he broke things off (if you're a dramatic bitch like me you could even say he broke their heart lol) but he knows that Hawke needs someone.

I keep wondering if someone else told him to go there of he went there out of his own volition, but either, its almost a way of saying things may be awkward between us but I'm here for you.

And like, Fenris is *bad* with this. He even says it so himself that he does not know what to say. He has not really been in a situation like that (or at least doesnt remember).

But he knows that Hawke is going through an extremely difficult time and the best he can offer is to be there, even at the risk of them turning him away.

i keep ping ponging between which DA game is my fave and its always a tight race between DAO and DA2. I always say it depends on the day, or more accuratly, which game I'm currently replaying bc i love them both equally

Hear me out: Fenris is living right across the street from Hawke, right? What if it’s not only Aveline who takes care of her family, what if Fenris takes it upon himself to protect his high-profile troublemaker of a friend lover? What if he’s grumpy about Aveline sending her patrols because they get in the way? Or he’s being protective of his territory.

What if he sometimes catches Hawke through the windows or they even have their own set of signals to communicate like those sappy teenagers? Omg omg my brain is firing on all cylinders!

No wonder Hawke’s home is undisturbed!
