there’s literally no point in teaching girls to be body positive if you only use men’s opinions for validation like “boys like girls with curves” nah get that the fuck out of here

“‘taylor swift feminism’ isn’t real feminism” hmm….using a woman’s name…to tear her and her beliefs down…that doesn’t sound super feminist either my friend…

Reminder: You are under no obligation to look pretty.
Not when you are laying around the house, not when you go to the grocery store, not when you sit in a classroom, not when you go to the gym. You are never obligated to get dressed up just so you are pretty for others.
Pretty is not the rent you pay to exist in the world as a woman.

Quote
Because when I was 13 years old, I was sent home for my tank top straps being a little too thin, but a boy could wear a Cool Story babe, Go Make Me A Sandwich shirt and not be looked at twice. Because when I was 17 and I told a guy “No” and the next day the word tease was painted on my locker. Because when I was 18 and just wanted to be friends, I was a bitch. Because I feel the need to say “I have a boyfriend” instead of “No” because guys respect other men more than they would ever respect me. Because society screams “don’t get raped” instead of “don’t rape” Because I am scared to walk alone at 10 PM Because being beautiful is the most important thing I’ll ever do. Because when I wear my favorite skirt “I’m asking for it” Because the song Blurred Lines exists Because no means no no matter how you fucking spin it Because a girl was drugged and raped with a beer bottle, and the boys who did it are out on bail. Because I owe you nothing Because pepper spray is a gift I receive yearly. Because I am asked if I have a boyfriend more than I am asked about my mental health Because my clothes say more about my consent then my mouth does. Because the wage gap exists Because “not all men are like that” is said way too often ENOUGH ARE Because I feel the need to say “I’m not a feminist but…” Because I’m writing this fucking piece

An open letter to Meghan Trainor...
alright apparently I’m in a rant-y mood today so everyone buckle up…
Dear Meghan Trainor,
Listen, I’ve never been a fan of yours. But when I saw people writing about the song “No,” I got excited, and thought maybe this would be added to my Summer 2016 playlist. Unfortunately, I was more than disappointed. In fact, I was personally insulted by the lyrics, “All my ladies listen up/If that boy ain’t giving up/ Lick your lips and swing your hips/ Girl, all you gotta say is/ My name is no.”
Why?
Because I said no. 8 months ago. Did that stop my rapist? No. Saying no didn’t stop him from giving up. This scenario you’ve set up in the lyrics you sing completely trivializes a very bad situation. “Lick your lips and swing your hips,”? Women are constantly being told to be sexy, and now you’re implying that they be sexy even when they’re trying to not be seen as a sexual object? It’s not empowering, it’s not cute, it’s insulting.
Also, “All you gotta say” is implying that “no” is a simple thing to say, when it’s quite the opposite. Women being sexually harassed and/or insulted go into one of three modes: fight, flight, or freeze. Sadly, “freeze,” is all too common. Saying “no” isn’t simple. They may be thinking “no” a million times over, but it doesn’t always come out of a victim’s mouth. It’s just a sad fact of sexual violence. Even worse, it’s not “all you gotta say.” Saying no often won’t stop a sexual predator. They won’t “let it go.” That’s the entire problem.
This just scratches the surface of the things that are wrong with the lyrics in your song. I could go on and on about how people of any gender can be put into an uncomfortable situation with a predator, not just “ladies,” or how the thought of people dancing to this upbeat song is sickening, but I’ll stop here. If you disagree, all you gotta say is no, but I’ll continue to assert how awful these lyrics are.

False rape accusations are an anomaly.
True rape accusations are a norm.
You’re, quite literally, more likely to be killed by a comet than falsely accused of rape.
