“…Ang syne…what the fuck?” Noah’s arm was frozen in the air, glass raised, several seconds after the party swam out of view and was replaced by pitch black and freezing. The floor had more give in it all of sudden too. Noah’s brain moved slowly enough (Shock. He was in shock, the medical kind that everyone knew you needed a blanket to cure) that the flashes of light that started zinging by seemed nothing but helpful at first. Apparently he was outside along with a bunch of other people running around half illuminated by flashes. That was weird. Some people were screaming. More weird.
One of the voices screamed for him to get down, and it was lucky that it was accompanied by Scorpius Malfoy running at him bodily like he was going to tackle him to enforce the order, because it caused him to unfreeze and obey and the curse that had been set to hit him miss them both. Sending Malfoy sprawling as the younger man tripped over him was an unfortunate side effect, and one that caused Noah’s stomach to reel and him to gag unproductively yet threateningly a few times because he was sure he’d heard a crunch and felt something give way against his shoulder which was pretty disturbing.
New context settled over him. He was outside and people were shooting at him. The two pieces of information were impossible to reconcile fully, but he wasn’t frozen anymore. He sprung to his feet, not sparing a glance for Scorpius–he was alive at least because he was cursing like goblin with his gold stolen–and started running, kicking up a wind directed by flailing hands to toss anything that tried to impede his progress out of his path as he did. “Out of the way!”  He wasn’t entirely sure where he was running to, but not here seemed like a solid option.
@feather-ed
The first person Ed took away was a young man he’d found cowering almost right next to the broom Roxanne direct him to. Whatever she’d intended for him to do - and he was convinced within minutes this was all her plan because it was grand enough to be only her - he wasn’t going to comply. Amidst the curses and screams, there were sobs as people who’d been pulled into this mess unintentionally tried to find a place to hide. It was all so open that there was no place to hide, and the focus required for a decent shield spell certainly couldn’t be found in such an atmosphere. Ed cast a spell around him and the man, mounted the broom, and carefully helped the new acquaintance clamber on. Ed instructed him to hold on and took off, focused only on getting them away and not necessarily with a specific place in mind.
It took several minutes before they were far enough away that the curses, hexes, and flashes were actually distant. Ed was nearly out of breath from the force he’d pushed on the broom and the wind he’d produced behind them to move even faster. His arms ached from the grip he had on the broom, but he didn’t fully let go even after they touched down. The man he helped got off and immediately sat down, clearly still in shock but not shaking nearly as much. Ed asked if he could Apparate; he could, but he’d need a minute. Ed asked the man wanted him to stay; he didn’t, but his friends were still back among the fighting and they needed help, too, even if they’d taken up their wand to join in.
Ed nodded once, gripped the broom, and took off again. The air was cold, whipping his face until it felt nearly raw from the speed at which he was traveling. Usually so easily distracted and thinking of two things at once, it’d been some time since Ed was so singly focused on anything outside of a work project. When he was close enough to hear distinct hexes, he also heard a voice shouting at others to get out of the way and quickly spotted the sprinting body it was attached to.
Slowing down, Ed circled high above the man running for his life long enough to get his wand out and put up a shield spell around himself. He dipped the broom suddenly and dove toward the man, who he now recognized as Noah Sharpe once he was close enough. Ed swung the broom wide and came to a halt in front of Noah, keeping the shield up as he nodded toward the back fo the broom. “I can help,” was all Ed offered, breathing heavily and no trace of his usual pleasant smile on his face.

Edward Corner is twenty-one years old, is an Assistant Keeper of the Hall of Prophecy in the Department of Mysteries, and was formerly in the house Ravenclaw
❝When you are in the air, there is no land you need to call home.
↳ MAGIC
Edward has more of a natural affinity for his element than was to be expected by either of his parents. When he was young it did not appear so, as it seems whenever his feet are on the ground, that his affinity is rather small. During his first time on a broom, however, it seemed as though his affinity grew by being airborne and he was completely in tune with his element. Due to this, he often practices his elemental magic while flying, something many others find very strange. He strives to be as studious as possible in learning everything about his skills, including his limits. It was no surprise that, once he began to study to become an Animagus, his form was a golden eagle, similar to his father’s avian Animagus form.
↳ BACKSTORY
The Corner boy is one of the most upbeat people. Like his younger sister, Johanna, he has a constant smile on his face. His sister means everything to him and he is extremely protective of her - a protective instinct that grew to include most people he considers his friends. He grew up hearing fairytales from his mother, who had lots of muggleborn friends in school, and found them to be more appropriate for kids than the wizard tales that could often be gruesome and dark. He loves the idea of story that ends in happily ever after, preferring to reflect on the fairy tales he was told as a child than the stories about war his parents told him as an adolescent.
Edward is slightly loony most of the time, preferring to live in the clouds and often showcasing a collection of weird quirks. People are drawn to his good looks and he still has not quite learned how to deal with that. He is a bit shy around new people, and can’t flirt for the life of him. It doesn’t take long for him to warm up to someone, though, and once he has, he’s willing to put everything on the line for them.
The general consensus at Hogwarts was Ed Corner is not normal. He is a fumbling mess, can never walk a straight line without tripping, and has some weird habits. All that seems to be forgotten once he is on a broom, however. He is nothing but graceful in the air, and it is not hard to see he is more comfortable on the air than on land.Being a Ravenclaw was always a bit too quiet for Ed, and he rarely enjoyed the peaceful, silent atmosphere of the common room. However, no one could say he did not belong there. The boy was brilliant in most subjects, and spent much of his free time studying subjects he no longer took classes in because there wasn’t time in his schedule. His greatest known downfall will always be Potions, as he has yet to live down spilling the entire contents of his cauldron on the proctor during his Potions OWLS in fifth year.
Even though he loves flying, he never tried out for the school team. He is not a fan of competitions, preferring to fly for fun when he is alone. He used to enjoy the perks of having his father as a professor. No teachers gave him detention when he forgot he broke something or got lost and missed his class. The only class he never missed was his father’s, and it was the class he often tried his hardest in because he wanted to make his father proud.
When the time came for Ed to decide if he wanted to pursue a career straight out of Hogwarts or attend university, it seemed like the obvious choice was to continue educating himself. He’d spent summers helping out with painting and construction around Diagon Alley, especially in his grandparents’ restaurant, and there was always something about magical architecture that appealed to both his creativity and his desire to intellectual challenge - as well as his love for complex magic. He loved the classes he took at university, and thought there was absolutely nothing that could take him away from what he had already put a year’s worth of his life into - until a suppposed “internship” opportunity far up north turned out to be more than he could have imagined.
After arriving on the scene for his internship, Ed was abducted and brought to an unknown location along with a handful of other people his age, including some he recognized from his Hogwarts years. They were launched into an intense test of their magical and logical skills to prove themselves to the mysterious figures of the Department of Mysteries who recruited them. Ed was one of the two who remained standing at the end, and he was soon learning the ropes of working in the most intriguing and vague department in the British Ministry of Magic. When the internship came to an end, he was offered to train as Assistant Keeper to the Hall of Prophecy, with the hope that he would one day design and help to construct a more secure hall for the most precious objects in the wizard world. For months he lied about what he was doing with his time, afraid that his parents and friends would be overly concerned about his job, or would pry too much, or would be disappointed that he had ceased his education.
The truth came out eventually, though, and just in time for him to not have the weight of a lie on his shoulders as he turned his attention more toward the creation of group similar to the Order of the Phoenix he’s heard about. What little free time he has from work he puts into helping to organize and run meeting for the group. He lost the first woman he loved to masked, dark wizards, a cliché that perhaps only happens to people like him who believe too much in fairy tales. The losses he’s suffered and the trials he’s faced have done little to deter him, however, and he’s more determined than ever to help launch a defense that will keep his friends and family safe.

The sudden shift made his stomach churn enough to threaten that all the food he’d forced down that night would come back up. For a moment, he feared he’d accidentally eaten something that caused him to hallucinate. It was usually fun, but that was only when such substances were taken knowingly. Was this what Jon had secretly been planning all night? He tried to take a deep breath and felt the expansion of his chest too vividly for this to be some strange hallucination. The faces that popped up around him wouldn’t be so clear either.
Ed couldn’t even begin to try to determine where they might be. All he knew was that as many people as possible needed to get out of there. They hadn’t all been brought to this location to continue the peace pact made at the hotel. He shed his optimism with ease in the face of an impending attack. “How do we get out of here?” He hadn’t quite regained enough visible focus yet to even see some of the faces around him, but he hoped someone would have an answer.

“Do you think Jon really planned it all?” Talking with strangers was the most honest kind of talking, Ed believed, and he fully leaned into it when it happened. There was still always a tinge if link on his cheeks and his words weren’t very certain, a symptom of shyness that, for him, honestly was the only cure for. It was something he wasn’t even sure he’d ask his most skeptical friends, like Roxanne, but it seemed that the words needed to be said. Could a killer really plan a wonderful party for peace? Had they all actually come if their own accord or was their some type of ancient compulsory rune or spell on the invitation? It was a lot to consider, and none of it he’d said aloud until now. “Oh, no need to apologize. I’m sure we’ve never met before. I’m Ed.”

Arrested and freed, right. Again, a light had flickered out. It was actually among some of the orbs he’d been testing out a new defensive shifting spell on. If Jo and Prue were around he likely wouldn’t have been so out of touch, but then again, it’s not as if he would’ve had much time for them. There was no administrative or bureaucratic power pressing down on him to complete his project in as little time as possible, but he still felt a sense of urgency that time couldn’t be wasted. And so he’d slept at the Hall more than he’d slept in his own bed. For a month he’d had a pain in his back from sleeping in a chair, but a bit of pain relieve potion applied to the spot and a hot cup of tea were enough to help at least push it out of mind. “I wouldn’t say we are. We haven’t done anything wrong.” He automatically assumed the woman he was talking to was innocent of any crimes. “Oh, yeah, I hope they have fondue.”
“Usually earmuffs and earplugs will work very effectively.” He nodded sagely as he spoke. “You just have to be sure they fit properly. If you’re not from an area with Windulates, what do you have?”
feather-ed‌:
Ed nodded along - her briefing reminded him of the series of headlines and articles he’d read last year. So much else had happened since that it wasn’t even on his mind as he looked out at the crowd once again, slower this time. He remembered the kidnapping…though, like more news stories than he could count, it wasn’t because of the actual event. It was because of the little orb that lost its light among the sea of glowing orbs filled with prophecies for anything from baby names to the end of times. “Has he been charged with abduction? Very awkward considering who from the Wizengamot is here.” Then again, it was becoming increasingly apparent just how very awkward it was for absolutely anyone to be there.
The conversation remaining on Windulates was more than welcome after having his eyes opened a little wider. “Oh, are you from farther up north? They tend to roam in central to southern parts of countries. Dizziness is usually the most prominent, and occasionally loss of eyesight. Or your toenails turning purple, but that’s usually only if the Windulates are young.”
Tumblr media
“He was arrested for it, Kitten. Then he was broken free of Azkaban by Jonathan Marks who is also here. You would think both would be dancing on the blades of a trap about to shut, or perhaps we are.”After laughing at his comment about awkwardness, she no longer hides that she considers it all to be exciting not frightening. “I hope we make it to the dessert course before the close. I have a sweet tooth.”
“I will stick to turning my toenails purple with charms. How are you supposed to stop a Windulate infestation before the blindness?”

Ed’s smile was as earnest as ever as he guided his friend toward a waiter nearby serving some hot appetizers. He knew it was technically the servers job to come to them, but they all worked so hard that it seemed fair for some others to go to them. A ridiculous thing to worry about to some, but it was such ridiculous thoughts that kept him smiling and munching away at a party that was hosted by the man who sent his friends to the other side of the Veil. Ed at least had the comfort, no matter how grim, of talking through the Veil and imagining his fallen friends were on the other side. Anger had never fully taken hold as part of his grieving process, but because of his privilege as an Unspeakable there was...guilt. Because even if he never got a response, he was still more assured he could be heard by his dead loved ones than anyone else in the current room. It was enough to ruin his appetite, but no one had ever known him not to have one. So he kept eating.
“The cheesy ones are tasty,” he said, plopping one down on his little party plate and handing another to Olivier. “Did you end up coming with anyone? I wish you could’ve brought Hope, but she probably would’ve stolen the show.”

“There definitely are a lot of people,” Ed agreed with an eager nod and a smile. He lifted his plate a little closer to his face to catch some crumbs as he easily inhaled another hors d'oeuvre. “I’m surprised they have enough food for everyone.”

“The man who held those poor kids and that film star hostage last year and then burned down Hogsmeade is here.” It gave her a moment of pause, being thrown off the script, needing to spell out the drama she thought all these people were living, and having Ed serenely give a magiozoology lesson rather than jump to play knight protector, but the unexpected reaction warmed her instead of leaving her cold or resentful of his missed lines in the play. It made him more interesting that he lived on a different plane or pretended it. “They don’t have Windulates where I’m from. How do you tell when they are around? Are there any more ill effects than dizziness?”

He was ready to pound Ed on the back, eyeing him warily as soon as he stuffed his mouth,  like he had been through this before. He became less guarded when he saw Ed was not going to choke, instead showing the same impatience he had with the girls. “There are criminals ‘ere. Am I the only one oo ‘as eyes that see tonight?”
Tumblr media
Ed scanned the room again, though he did it so swiftly that all the faces and bodies blurred together in a beautiful kaleidoscope of color that only made him smile. “People who do wrong things can turn their lives around,” he reasoned, still oblivious to just what kind of criminals were lurking among the only vaguely familiar ministry worker faces. He’d seen some on the elevators or in cafeterias, but as an Unspeakable he didn’t interaction much more beyond that. He’d already seen the way some of them had given him uncertain looks, perhaps even more uncertain than they gave the criminals in their midst. He was aware he was the only Unspeakable there. “But if you’re really uncomfortable, I don’t mind leaving. We just need to take some of this food to go, it’s way too good.”

“Has there been much speaking and violence?” The blush that arose came from talking to a strange, not embarrassment over appearing disconnected from the world. It was admittedly something he needed to work on for the sake of people not getting suspicious as to why he seemed to be so uninformed on headlines and incidents in the press. Perhaps he should start reading the Daily Prophet more religiously and not using them mostly as doorstoppers and floor covering when he (now rarely) had the chance to paint.

“I hope you don’t mind if I stay close to you tonight. There’s certainly some interesting persons in attendance here tonight. I can’t say part of me isn’t dying of curiosity and barely holding back rushing to satisfy it, but I also can’t say I’m completely comfortable.”

“Interesting? How?” Ed had a subscription to the Daily Prophet, but they mostly stacked up and when he had the time and energy to read, he stuck with horoscopes, comics, and Quidditch reports. Obviously there were certain faces there that had to make him wonder just who the unfamiliar faces belonged to, but he didn’t have Jo or Prue there to help fill him in on the details that he’d missed out on whilst several hundred feet below the surface of the earth for the greater part of several months. “The discomfort might be because of the Windulates. They start to come out of hibernation on New Year’s and tend to throw off equilibrium. The Quibbler had a great analysis of the effects in their October issue.”

tristan-not-naive‌:
“…but it’s of course more complicated than just standard fire resisting runic circles. Knockturn Alley exploded. Protection against that requires circles to do with spells, and with combustible potions, not to mention the half dozen different muggle ways there are to blow something up.”
Tris climbed down the ladder he’d scaled at the start of the discussion, the book he’d been searching for tucked securely under his arm, and huffed out a brittle laugh.
“When I chose Runes as my focus for university, I never imagined I’d be commissioned by half of what’s left of Knockturn Alley to come up with protection circles to stop their shops and flats from being blown up. I thought I’d spend my life as a linguist. Doing translations.” There was a touch of ruefulness to his smile, under the exhaustion brought on by the last month, by the last three years, and he shrugged a little helplessly, his smile wistful.
“Perhaps this party is exactly what everyone needs.” He pondered for a moment, before scrunching up his nose, “of course it could result in hostilities getting worse afterwards, but it’s anyone’s guess.”
He, of course, was attending because it was the only way to speak with half his childhood friends without looking like he was joining one cause or the other. Politics and party aside, he was just…lonely.
Tris missed his friends.
Tumblr media
Ed heard Runes mentioned a few rows away and immediately closed the book he’d been browsing, with his thumb as a placeholder, and walked over to listen in. The joyful spring in his step on the way faded when he was close enough to realize there was another focus to the discussion: Knockturn Alley. He suddenly felt sick and knew his face had sudden gone pale, so he cast a silent Transfiguration charm on his cheeks to regain the color. The pleasantly warm feeling that crept through his cheeks almost felt like two hands pressing gently to his face and it brought a smile to his face.
The party. This wasn’t the first time he’d heard a stranger talking about it. The more people he realized were going, the more torn he became over attending himself. He’d never been one for big crowds (outside concerts, but those were totally different experiences), and over the last few months found himself becoming even warier. Even in the cafeteria at the Ministry, he felt uncertain about who might be looking his way too much. It was a skeptical feeling that left him feeling uneasy more often than he wanted to admit.
“It could also just be a fun party,” he suggested with a hopeful smile, stepping forward to join the conversation when it seemed most fitting. “Everyone enjoys a fun party.”

“Sometimes I legitimately worry about you, honey, and not just when you’re twirling that damn wand. Tell me what day of the month it is, how many hours you slept last night or, failing that, what night it was when you last slept and for how many hours, name a human you don’t work with that you had a conversation more than a minute with recently, and the describe the best meal you ate this week, all without hesitation or I’m going to cast a stunner on you.”
Tumblr media
It was Roxanne Weasley, so a barrage of questions was to be expected. It was one of the things Ed looked forward to most whenever he spoke with her. Still, it caught him off-guard to have to reflect on his habits of the past week. He paused for a moment just to process everything before responding. “It’s the second, but that could be wrong. I slept last night for four hours. I talked with Hope - sorry, human. Um, Emma. Best meal...” He did hesitate, but only because his palette was so unrefined he couldn’t tell which was better between Muggle fast food and wizard gourmet. “Some leftover stew from Mum. What was your best meal?”

“Umm… no. I didn’t ask her that. Can you explain why it would make a difference?”
Tumblr media
“Well, if she said you had to get it, then that means she believes there’s a time and place in your future when you’d need your hate. If she’s a Seer, or has Seer ancestry, that means she probably really can tell exactly what people do and don’t need.” An overstatement, obviously, since prophecies really could be so subjective and too difficult for even the wisest of Seers to decipher sometimes.
