who/what makes you feel safe?

“i mean, isn’t that obvious? my siblings, of course. mainly nette cause’ enz’ always keeps me on my toes. but i know he’s always down to throw a few punches for us. nette’s like… good at making you feel confident. i could shave my eyebrows off an’ she’d still hype me up.”

“in terms of what makes me feel safe? that’s a hard one. i never really had toys or anythin’ when i was growing up, so i couldn’t name a blanket or stuffed animal or somethin.’ i like boxing. m’confident when i do that, cause’ i know i can physically protect myself if i have to.”

what type of person do you hope to be?

“jesus, that’s a loaded question. at one point in my life i would’ve loved to be the person who could just pick up an’ leave and never look back. but doin’ that was pretty impossible for me.”

“scratch that. i wanna be someone who makes my mother regret ever layin’ a finger on me, who makes my step-dad boil with anger at how unaffected i am by his torture, and who makes my biological dad wish he could get an ounce of credit for how i turned out. i want to see them all come beggin’ on their knees one day, just so i can turn em’ down. i wanna’ make them all eat their words.”

what was your first kiss like?

“oh, geez. i mean, i kissed some other kid in a bar when we were both like 7, cause’ we thought that’s how you got married. but, as in like, actual first kiss? with feelings and shit? i think i was 17. i got drunk with a friend an’ we ended up kissing and that’s when i realized i liked dudes and chicks. and then i cut her out of my life because that thought scared me shitless. but that’s a whole’nother story.”

if you could change one thing about your life what would it be?

“i would’ve spoken up an’ done somethin’ while nette and enzo were still tiny. it’s too late to really save any of us now.”

who is someone you thought would be in your life forever, but you no longer talk to?

“well, i grew up thinkin’ it would always be me and my dad against the world. he was basically the only steady thing in my life. but shit happens, y’know? we all grow up thinkin’ things will be the same forever. s’just that reality hit me faster than it hits most kids.”

“i guess he’s a good guy. but i can’t–i can’t have him in my life. it just makes things too complicated. feels like we were both born again into two totally different worlds, an’ those first seven years took place in a different universe. m’not the same naive seven-year-old kid anymore. the girl he thinks of as his daughter died fifteen years ago. i killed her to survive.”

what is your daily routine like?

“work, mostly. interrupted with the occasional break to pick enzo up from the police station, or to try an’ intercept the step-dick from alcohol and/or my siblings. i get all my free-time once he’s passed out at night. that’s when i’ll ride my motorcycle or drink or sketch. or a combination of the three. i mostly box or hang around the bike shop on the weekends. basically anything to keep me out of the house.”
