Fc Barcelona- Més que un club
Today brings us together a sport which I adore and also watch weekly: Football. So, football is a game in which two teams of 11 players, who try to maneuver the ball with their whole body into the net without the use of their hands and arms. But I am not here to tell you what is football or to explain how it’s played. I want to speak of an issue which involves a football club, and that club is none other than Fc Barcelona. It’s one of the best clubs in the world and it’s facing a crisis.
Barcelona has been facing some board issues lately, especially concerning the president and his actions. There’s a current petition going on to sack him and I am advocating for that too. Barto (the president) kept repeating these three words: “Good for Barca”, while competing for the elections 3 years ago and to be honest nothing has gone well for Barca since then. On the other hand, their rivals Real Madrid are strengthening their club. There are multiple things that went wrong which I’ll be telling you about, starting with the “Famous Trident MSN” that no longer exists. Secondly, Barcelona got knocked out of the Champions league quarter finals twice in a row, which surprisingly never has happened in a decade. Finally, the lack of investment in young players/La Masia (Barcelona academy) and the aging players in our team. Plus, the inability to renew contracts with crucial players in our team.
So, the famous trio Messi-Suarez-Neymar got broken up when Neymar left on 222m€ transfer to Paris Saint-Germain F.C. That trio is arguably one of the best of all time, if not the best. In 2015, they set a new record racking up 131 goals between them. That’s about 75% of the goals scored by the team. Neymar said to the press “This president is a joke” after leaving Barcelona. Neymar maybe left the club because of the president although it’s not clear that he left because of Barto. But it’s not the first time a player criticized the board after leaving complaining they were treated badly (Jeremy Mathieu, Dani Alves, etc.). Other than the problem that Bartomeu contributed by helping the break up, Barto never spent the money wisely to find a replacement for Neymar and strengthen their squad overall. He bought a 30-year-old player using the funds generated from Neymar’s transfer.
Furthermore, Barcelona got eliminated the last two years in a row from the Champions league after winning the treble the previous year. It started off well when they won the two domestic cups and the European cup. The next two years, though, weren’t so good since Barca lacked players in some positions during the competitions either because someone was injured and there was no one to replace him or we just lacked a player in a certain position.
Probably the biggest reason why I am advocating for Barto’s leaving is his lack of investment towards. The investment in youth pl, ayers played a big role in building up Barcelona. La Masia developed players such as Iniesta, Xavi, Puyol, Busquets, and Messi. These players are recognized as one of the best of their generations and in their positions. Since Barto came, the interests in raising up players has lowered. The lack of investment in general is like destroying the club since it’s what constructed and build up the club. We would haéve never expected this problem half a decade ago when Barcelona’s first team contained 7 youth graduates in the squad and managed to win the treble in 2011. Now, it has drastically changed.
One more big issue is that Bartomeu is failing to renew Messi’s and Iniesta’s contracts. Looking at what both of these players did for their club they should at least have the choice to retire in their club with honor. Messi can still provide and so can Iniesta even though he is aging.
So, what is happening now? What actions are being taken to fix this? As of now, nothing has happened yet but there’s a Vote of No Confidence. It’s a petition to force Barto out and call for a re-election. Benedito (Former Candidate) is starting this move insisting that “This board has done an incredibly bad job” and saying Barto should resign. So, as a result he is collecting signatures from registered members called Socios. As of today, Benedito now requires 6,500 votes for October 2nd. The Fc Barcelona board refutes that by saying the deadline is September 27th, which is the real deadline, even though Benedito isn’t accepting that, he doesn’t really have a choice since they have the bigger voice. He has collected more than 10,000 votes now and he needs about 16,670. Now all we can do is hope he reaches his destination. If he doesn’t reach his goal, we will still support the board since we are ‘Més Que Un Club’.

Barcelona played behind closed doors after La Liga officials refuse postponement
Barcelona faced off Las Palmas behind closed doors in an empty Camp Nou due to clashes in the city. Thousands were left stranded outside the Nou Camp after violence in the city over Catalonia's protest for independence. The club asked to postpone the match because of the chaos in the city and respect for the referendum. But Barcelona would have lost six points if they didn’t play. Three for not playing and another three as a result of a sanction.
The region has seen violent scenes today as the local population heads out to vote on the matter of its independence in a referendum ruled as illegal by the Spanish authorities.

Messi bags in a brace and Busquets scores a header after halftime from a corner kick. Easy victory for the Catalan Giants, even though they played in an empty stadium due to the violence in the streets of Catalunya.

FT Girona vs Barcelona 0-3
Goals: Aday (O.G. 17’), Iraizoz (O.G. 48’), Suárez (69’)
“Barcelona extended their perfect start to the La Liga season with a sixth consecutive victory, this time a 3-0 triumph away from home against Catalan rivals Girona. The Blaugrana were solid throughout the match and never looked like dropping points, and while this wasn’t their best performance, it was strong enough to get a good win at a difficult stadium and remain perfect in the league.“- Renato Goncalves
